We've been playing with powder coating lately. Rachel Shimpock, see what you made us do.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - There were no trails to this spot, but I knew if I could reach the top of the cliffs there would be a scenic view of the Powder River below. But I nearly got bit by a 4.5 foot long rattlesnake since I didn't see it sunning itself.

Two speedlights on 1/2 power in one silver umbrella, quite high (~ 2,5 m), 45° to the model. Why did we use two speedlights on half the power instead of one on full power? Makes them faster ..., to freeze the flying colored flour. The umbrella was half-collapsed to concentrate the spotlight.

Stefan finding some powder in the trees

I was delighted to notice this Red Powder Puff plant in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo yesterday! I had seen a few photos posted by other people and was longing to see one for myself. I had imagined the flowers to be much larger than they actually are. Such an amazing flower!

"Native to Bolivia, Red Powder Puff is an evergreen shrub or small tree. It was formerly included in the legume or pea family, but has recently been shifted into the mimosa family. It typically grows 10-15’ tall in its native habitat and is a very popular flowering shrub in central and southern Florida where it will survive year-round in the ground. Bipinnately compound leaves (5-10 pairs of leaflets per pinna) open copper-pink but mature to dark green. Raspberry-like flower buds open to hemispherical red powder puff flower heads (to 3” across) consisting of masses of scarlet stamens. Blooms primarily in fall and winter, but sporadic additional bloom may occur throughout the rest of the year. Variations in flower color exist, with some pink and white forms being available. Calliandra comes from the Greek words kallos meaning beauty and andros meaning stamen." From www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp.

for Lake Tahoe.

My son just discovered something cool while zooming into our hotel pool on Google Earth: the mountain we are skiing on, Mt. Pluto, is responsible for the formation of Lake Tahoe.

I always wondered why such a deep lake would exist high up in the Sierras. At 1,645 ft. deep, it holds a lot of water (the 26th-largest by volume in the world).

It is the result of a massive lava flow from Mount Pluto (2 million years ago) blocking the downstream river exit for the water.

Common name: Dwarf Powder Puff, Miniature powderpuff

Botanical name: Calliandratergemina var. emarginata (List of synonyms)

- [ (kal-ee-AN-druh) from the Greek kallos (beautiful) and andra (stamen); (e-mar-jin-NAY-tuh) with a notched margin ]

Family: Mimosaceae

(touch-me-not family) or Fabaceae s.l. (pea, or bean family)

- [ (fab-AY-see-ay) the Faba (broad bean) family, (formerly Leguminosae, the legume family) ]

Origin: Southern Mexico, Panama, Bolivia

This medium-sized shrub is spectacular when in flower. The blooms are brilliant red and really stand out. The foilage is also attractive with light green kidney shaped leaflets, appearing in pairs. This particular variety grows approximately six to seven feet and is always in bloom. For those interested in bright colours, this is a must.

The flowers open 9 to 10 months out of the year (often resting in midwinter) and remain for 6 to 8 weeks, their unusual form and bold color attracting attention despite the plant's small stature. 1 to 2 inches across, these blooms offer a nice foil to the soft green leaves of this 10 to 14-inch-high tree. Outdoors, the flowers are butterfly magnets, their nectar attracting many winged visitors.
