The river cuts through this island in the Potomac River near Washington, DC. Ice lines the sides of the rocks.

Late day light over Olmstead Island and a view of the Potomac River as a small part of it cuts through the land ... the larger section of the river can just be seen farther off where this small section flows on and joins back in. Virginia is there in the far off river bank and below the pretty clouds.

Cole's Point Virginia

The Potomac river was very icy these days. This gentleman collected plastic bottles, as well as other garbage floating on the river, and tried to cross the river from Maryland side. I watched him struggle with passing broken pieces of ice, and eventually reached to the Virginia side. Not sure what would be in his mind if he accidently dropped into the water—a life-threatening situation in winter time. Anyway, I admired his bravery and determination of protecting our environment. He earned my salute!

2-27-2022 Update: I encountered this gentleman near Belle Heaven Park today, who was heading to Potomac river to collect garbage again. His name is Joe, and here is his website supgarbageman.org/

Sun sets over the tidal Potomac just beyond Mt Vernon.

This section of the mighty river breaks into smaller pieces off of the main river as it cuts through Olmstead Island out in the river.

Decided to take the shutter a little quicker here to 1/4 second versus 1 to seconds as I was capturing with the 6 Stop ND. To save time taking off the 6 Stop and placing the 4 Stop ND on, figured it was easier to increase the ISO to 400 and reduce the shutter speed to 1/4 second.

Liked the patterns in the rushing water here at this shutter speed.

Smooth Potomac River in the morning in the Great Falls National Park area.

This is a two shot stitch taken with the 10mm nearly a year ago there below Great Falls on the MD side. This capture was also taken with the CPL filter, allowing for the reflection afar, but seeing into the river there up close.

I need to head back there again soon I think and play around some more.

Potomac River at Great Falls National Park. For those that enjoy black & white I posted a link to a mono version of the image below.

Sunset passed and the cool blue hour begins over Great Falls, Maryland.

Early morning on this river below the main falls.

sunbeams alight on the budding trees and the winding potomac river after a wild thunderstorm on north fork mountain in west virginia. www.bobstoughphotography.com/

intervalometer, check. extra batteries, check. remote receiver, check. settings correct, check. So why the *F* is it not working!

Dawn patrol this year has been full of challenges. 2 decent sessions in 8 months is not a good track record. Life of a landscape photog, I guess.

Anyway, presenting a black and white rendition of the the pier at Leesylvania State Park, using the Little Stopper instead of the Big Stopper, and some editing magic.

the Quantico Marine base runs into the Potomac River in Virginia and this is looking north towards Washington DC.

View of the pedestrian bridge that crosses this small section of the Potomac River as it cuts across Olmstead Island there at Great Falls. Well into the blue hour, the mix of that light and the city lights of Washington DC suburbs on the clouds was very pretty as the stars started to come out. A pretty evening, and nice there with the flowing river drowning out any other noise.

Worth sticking around for this view as the darkness set in. Though it was a little spooky there all alone ;)

A shell of an old steel ship is grounded and part of the Ghost Fleet at Mallows Bay.

On our Ode search we came across these Turtles "fighting". They were engaged in this way for quite some time. I am assuming it's a territorial dispute? I'm not certain on the species either.....

Potomac River, at least a small part of it here, is carving its way through Olmstead Island that sits out in the river.
