Jose R. Alcántara, also known as “Blackie”, is an 80-year old Indian Yaqui from Sonora, Mexico. He had been living in the U.S for more than 50 years. We shared the same bus one afternoon, and during our ride to southern Tucson, “Blackie” told me plenty stories. He had been in jail for 17 years after murdering two men. He had to hide for 4 years after working as a smuggler and with certain Mexican drug-cartels. He had also been married twice, and as far as I understood, he wanted to give love another chance. Blackie, was by far one of the most interesting characters for my exploratory research on Mexican illegal immigration in Arizona.
