Trees in winter

With the arrival of winter, and often at the end of autumn, a new problem arises with trees. This specific "winter" problem is associated with the accumulation of wet snow and the formation of frost on the branches and trunks of trees. "Freezing rains" - phenomena occur under certain combinations of weather conditions: sleet, wind, fog, sudden changes in temperature with a "transition through 0 degrees". Such a significant load on the branches and trunks of trees can lead to emergency situations:

1. Breaking off and collapse of large branches. Typical for poplar, aspen, willow, linden, oak. To a lesser extent for pines and elms.

2. Breaking the forks of co-dominant trunks. Most often found in the above tree species with V-shaped forks. Less typical for U-shaped forks of birch and spruce.

3. Bending under the weight of snow and ice, with possible breaking of the trunks of inclined trees.

I found the trees without obvious problems :)

Rest we need it all !

Thanks for all the nice comments last week !

It would be possible to get this shot where I live HOWEVER that is not what happened.

The hawk is my shot that I took while out on a winter hike and although I do have trees like these around here, these particular trees are courtesy Unsplashed. I blended the two together for a little winter wonderland.

I have shown this photo in a colour version before.

Today I show it again as a symbol of social distancing, which has become so normal for all of us in these days

The Laugavegur is a famous trekking route in South-West Iceland from the hot springs area of Landmannalaugar to the glacial valley of Þórsmörk . It is noted for the wide variety of landscapes on its 55 km (34 mi) path. The route is typically completed over 2–4 days with potential stops at the mountain huts at Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil and Emstrur. An ultramarathon is held on the route each July. It is possible to combine the trek with the Fimmvörðuháls route which goes over the pass from Þórsmörk to Skógar for an additional one or two days or an additional 25 km (16 mi). Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and Skógar are all reachable by bus during the summer. A bus from Hella connects with Álftavatn once a day during the summer.

From the top, an impressive plateau, it is possible to contemplate the entire city of Rio and its surroundings – it is possible to see the Sugar Loaf, Christ the Redeemer, the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, and even the mountains of Serra of the Organs. It's an unforgettable sight!

O inevitável cotidiano / The inevitable daily

“Never say that you can't do something, or that something seems impossible, or that something can't be done, no matter how discouraging or harrowing it may be; human beings are limited only by what we allow ourselves to be limited by: our own minds. We are each the masters of our own reality; when we become self-aware to this: absolutely anything in the world is possible.

Master yourself, and become king of the world around you. Let no odds, chastisement, exile, doubt, fear, or ANY mental virii prevent you from accomplishing your dreams. Never be a victim of life; be it's conqueror.”

Dún Aonghasa (Unofficial anglicised version Dun Aengus) is the best-known of several prehistoric hill forts on the Aran Islands of County Galway, Republic of Ireland. It lies on Inis Mór, at the edge of a 100-metre-high (330 ft) cliff.

A popular tourist attraction, Dún Aonghasa is an important archaeological site.

History

It is not known exactly when Dún Aonghasa was built, though it is now thought that most of the structures date from the Bronze Age and Iron Age. T. F. O'Rahilly surmised in what is known as O'Rahilly's historical model that it was built in the 2nd century BC by the Builg following the Laginian conquest of Connacht.Excavations at the site indicate that the first construction goes back to 1100 BC, when rubble was piled against large upright stones to form the first enclosure. Around 500 BC, the triple wall defenses were probably constructed along the fort's western side.

The 19th-century artist George Petrie called "Dún Aonghasa" "the most magnificent barbaric monument in Europe". Its name, meaning "Fort of Aonghas", may refer to the pre-Christian god of the same name described in Irish mythology, or the mythical king, Aonghus mac Úmhór. It has thus traditionally been associated with the Fir Bolg.

Form and function

The fort consists of a series of four concentric walls of dry stone construction, built on a high cliff some one hundred metres above the sea. At the time of its construction sea levels were considerably lower and a recent Radio Telefis Eireann documentary estimates that originally it was 1000 metres from the sea. Surviving stonework is four metres wide at some points. The original shape was presumably oval or D-shaped but parts of the cliff and fort have since collapsed into the sea. Outside the third ring of walls lies a defensive system of stone slabs, known as a cheval de frise, planted in an upright position in the ground and still largely well-preserved. These ruins also feature a huge rectangular stone slab, the function of which is unknown. Impressively large among prehistoric ruins, the outermost wall of Dún Aonghasa encloses an area of approximately 6 hectares (14 acres).

Today

The walls of Dún Aonghasa have been rebuilt to a height of 6m and have wall walks, chambers, and flights of stairs. The restoration is easily distinguished from the original construction by the use of mortar.[citation needed]

There is a small museum illustrating the history of the fort and its possible functions. Also in the vicinity is a Neolithic tomb and a small heritage park featuring examples of a traditional thatched cottage and an illegal poteen distillery.

Cap Fungus

When one thinks of a mushroom, the first image to appear in their head is the shape of a classic cap mushroom. Although this type of fungus is more common growing on the ground than on a tree, it’s still possible to see them on a tree trunk.

Remember – don’t go around eating random mushrooms! Many are poisonous, hallucinogenic, or deadly, and it’s easy to mistakenly identify different types. Go with a seasoned mushroom forager who knows what they’re doing.

Swallowing a meal for the great egret (Ardea alba) involves flicking its food into the air followed by a gulp.

The two egret images are taken in the same location (a small pond at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge) but on different days. It is possible it is the same bird, but not guaranteed because we have seen as many as 8 great egrets at once in this location.

I went with two images because they tell different parts of the same story. I think I like the "kerplunk" one better because of the fat water droplets frozen in time and the mirror like reflection, but I also do like the action shot "bottoms up". Let me know if you have an opinion!

Not 100% sure but I suspect it's ticks that are damaging the birds eyes, if you zoom in just under the eye there's something that looks like a fresh tick. Sorry Jean Marie but your comment made sense, I think you are right it's the ticks that's damaging the eyes..

A wander through the Werribee River Park this morning yielded three confirmed lifers, and a possible fourth, along with some other fabulous shots. I have chosen to post the three lifers today.

Public Sculpture and Fountains

You can always guarantee when you visit a city for the first time, there will always be plenty of public works. I like to seek them out, where ever possible. I’m amazed at the quantity, the scale, the quality and sometimes, just the sheer irresponsibility of corporate bodies in their quest to spend our money. How did the 10cc put it? “Art for Arts’ sake”. However mostly I like what I see, hope you do too.

As you will see all of the images in this posting come from Rome. What a beautiful City.

This is an image I have wanted to attempt for a number of years now. It is strangely adjacent to a major highway and a challenge to achieve. However, this time it appeared possible to go for it. In the past we have always been busily racing home from an outing and the timing was always wrong with a car full of family.

Now, I was on my own and the highway was not too busy. Part of the challenge is just stopping because the highway shoulder is barely wide enough. Cars are whizzing by at 120K. However, the conditions were right to grab this shot and this is the result.

CN 2032 leads an empty limestone train around an S-curve in Culver, MN bound for Proctor.

Going home with a sunny shot here didn't seem possible as our first day was cloudy, and the following two days had no southbounds running late-morning. All hope was lost since the weather forecasted was cloudy. However, the clouds broke free and we were able to get two trains in sun here.

Examples of the works of Art in the Museum – South Kensington Museum – Published in 2 Volumes in 1881 – Book 1 - Plate Nos: 37 - 42

Sometime ago I posted some of the illustrations from the above book and I hoped that would be able to find them physically in the museum and photograph them. I took the third set of 15 illustrations from this book and went on the V & A website; Search the Collections. My results were based upon the following criteria:

(1) Items I did locate and photograph.

(2) Items that were in storage

(3) Items I couldn’t find anywhere

So I will be posting them, along with their locations in the museum, against the original plate and photograph from storage (where possible). The original price and any further information I might find.

One thing I didn’t count on, was that renovations would alter the interior of the building so drastically. I have found it very difficult to pin some of these locations down but in the main they have been found.

Not many of the examples shown this time were successful, as can be seen I only found 1 item.

As the name suggests, the Marsh Harrier lives in wetland habitats. They are a success story now after being extinct in Britain in the 19th Century. Since the first pairs bred in 1971 in Suffolk they have increased very well indeed, as has the wetland management on which they depend. It is now a regular sight to see these wonderful large harriers hunting over our marshes. I photographed this one locally, something that I would not have thought possible only 30 years ago.

Thank you for having a look at my photos. Comments or faves are very welcome and much appreciated.

It is finally possible to visit "my" park again without having to present a negative Covid test and so I went there this morning. I was delighted to see that there will be a sand sculpture festival again this year. The sculpture in this photo is the only one which is complete for now but the artists are already working on several more sculptures. Watch this space. :)
