Óbidos es uno de los mejores ejemplos de ciudad amurallada portuguesa y uno de los mejores destinos turísticos de la región de Lisboa. Históricamente, Óbidos era propiedad de la Reina de Portugal, una tradición que nació en el año 1282 cuando la población fue regalada a la Reina Isabel el día de su boda.
Este patronazgo real doto a Óbidos de una herencia positiva que todavía conserva, y en la actualidad es la ciudad más encantadora y atractiva del centro de Portugal. Intramuros encontramos un castillo bien conservado y un laberinto de calles y casas blancas que fascinan a quien por allí se pasea. Entre pórticos manuelinos, ventanas floridas y pequeñas plazas, encontramos varios motivos de visita, buenos ejemplos de la arquitectura religiosa y civil de las épocas doradas del pueblo.

Óbidos 1140 táján még egész közel volt a tengerhez, azóta közéjük ékelődtek a lagúnák. 1328-ban Dénes kiraly látogatott ide felesége társaságában, akinek kérését nem tudta elutasítani, neki adta Óbidost. A város így lett 1833-ig a portugál koronáé. Egykor V. Alfonz – tízévesen – itt vette nőül nyolcesztendős unokahúgát. Leonora, II. János felesége itt töltötte fia halála utáni első fájdalmas napjait. Itt élt a sevillai származású festőnő, Josefa de Óbidos is, műveivel gyakorta találkozhatunk a templomokban.
A orillas del Mondego, Coimbra es famosa por su Universidad, la más antigua de Portugal y una de las más antiguas de Europa, que con el paso del tiempo ha modelado su imagen, convirtiéndola en “la ciudad de los estudiantes”.
UNIVERSIDAD DE CPOIMBRA: Fundada en el siglo XIII e incluida por la UNESCO en la lista de Patrimonio Mundial, una clasificación que abarca asimismo la Rua da Sofia y la parte alta de la ciudad. Dentro de su recinto se pueden visitar, entre otras cosas, el Patio de las Escuelas, la Sala dos Capelos (Sala de los Birretes), donde tienen lugar las ceremonias más importantes, la Capilla de San Miguel, con un imponente órgano barroco y la Biblioteca Joanina, que cuenta con más de 300.000 obras que datan entre los siglos XVI y XVIII dispuestas en bellísimos estantes ornamentados con talla dorada.
El conjunto de edificios ocupa el lugar del palacio en el que vivieron los primeros reyes de Portugal, los cuales llegaron a establecer aquí la capital del reino.
Looking through one of the windows in the medieval wall surrounding the fortified city of Obidos, Portugal, provides a view of an old windmill and the surrounding countryside. In days past the view would have been of invading armies needing to be repelled.

I couldn't find out where the upper exit for this lift was until I got back from Portugal and looked at photos taken from the Bairro Alto side at the top. The bridge is on the other side and can't be seen from where I am standing. I wondered how and where people got out at the top since it just looks like a tower.
Built in 1902 to resemble the architecture of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the lift is a speedier way of getting to the neighborhood at the top of the hill. But it's such a tourist attraction, that there is always a line, and it costs almost 6 euro.
I didn't have the time it would take to wait, so just opted to take a photo from this side. There are some nice vistas to be seen when at the top.

After Rabat, Marvin and I pressed on to Marrakesh. As we entered the city limits, it became instantly clear that this was a very big city and navigating for me was going to be difficult, as I did not know French or Arabic. Some how we managed, but I will give all the credit to Marvin. We found a fairly economical place to stay, as we wanted to explore the city in depth.
Then Marvin shared more news with me. While driving here, he sensed that the transmission needed to be looked at. So after checking into a hotel, we went to a gas station looking for a mechanic. Luck was with us again and we found a skilled young man who was also very hospitable. He said that if we went with him to his home that he would fix the Volkswagen.
We followed him to his modest home where he lived with his mother. He insisted that I wait inside the house for the car to be fixed. I was concerned, as I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. Again, I thought that to decline the invitation would be rude.
His mother welcomed me inside the house where she was watching television. She was watching vintage American cartoons duped in French. We ended up laughing and laughing, even though we could not actually say anything meaningful to each other.
When the job of fixing the transmission became more complicated, she asked her son to fetch some bread from the market. She shared the bread and some wonderful tea with me. Some how we found a way to communicate to the extent that she even decided to produce some of her medical bills and then tried to discuss her concerns with me. As a life long social worker, I am convinced that I have a SW written on my forehead because this has happened more than once in my travels.
I commiserated with her and we carried on about the unfair nature of societies and government. ( I think) Needless to say, I have always remembered these moments of waiting with great respect for the Arab and Muslim people of the world.
The picture is of one of several palaces found in Marrakesh. I am so disappointed that I didn’t take more photos. In my memories, however, I can picture the beauty of the city that Winston Churchill was so found of painting.
