Aldea histórica de Portugal, Monsanto está construida en piedra granítica.
Monsanto se encuentra en la cuesta de una gran elevación escarpada, llamada Cabeço de Monsanto (Mons Sanctus). Se sitúa al Noreste de Idanha-a-Nova e irrumpe repentinamente del valle. En el punto más alto su pico alcanza los 758 metros. La presencia humana en este lugar data del paleolítico. La arqueología dice que el lugar fue habitado por los romanos, en el piedemonte del monte. También existen vestigios de presencia visigótica y árabe. Los moros serían derrotados por Don Alfonso Enríquez y, en 1165, el lugar de Monsanto fue donado a la Orden de los Templarios que sobre orientaciones de Gualdim Pais, que mandó construir el Castillo de Monsanto. La Carta de foral fue concedida por primera vez en 1174 por el rey de Portugal y rectificada, sucesivamente, por Don Sancho I (en 1190) y Don Alfonso II (en 1217).

Óbidos es uno de los mejores ejemplos de ciudad amurallada portuguesa y uno de los mejores destinos turísticos de la región de Lisboa. Históricamente, Óbidos era propiedad de la Reina de Portugal, una tradición que nació en el año 1282 cuando la población fue regalada a la Reina Isabel el día de su boda.
Este patronazgo real doto a Óbidos de una herencia positiva que todavía conserva, y en la actualidad es la ciudad más encantadora y atractiva del centro de Portugal. Intramuros encontramos un castillo bien conservado y un laberinto de calles y casas blancas que fascinan a quien por allí se pasea. Entre pórticos manuelinos, ventanas floridas y pequeñas plazas, encontramos varios motivos de visita, buenos ejemplos de la arquitectura religiosa y civil de las épocas doradas del pueblo.
Coimbra is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The population of the municipality at the 2011 census was 143,397, in an area of 319.40 square kilometres. The fourth-largest urban centre in Portugal (after Lisbon, Porto and Braga), it is the largest city of the district of Coimbra and the Centro Region. About 460,000 people live in the Região de Coimbra, comprising 19 municipalities and extending into an area of 4,336 square kilometres.
Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, are its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain. During the late Middle Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural centre. This was in large part helped by the establishment of the University of Coimbra in 1290, the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. Apart from attracting many European and international students, the university is visited by many tourists for its monuments and history. Its historical buildings were classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2013: "Coimbra offers an outstanding example of an integrated university city with a specific urban typology as well as its own ceremonial and cultural traditions that have been kept alive through the ages."
Rare sighting of old windmill that once were very prevalent in this region. We were leaving Evora when I just happened to spot this and, of course, I just had to take photos. Got the impression that this one was no longer used. It was on private fenced property and we didn't have time to stop and inquire and get closer shots, etc. Recently read that many old windmills are now being converted into tourist lodgings.
