These publications fill a curious niche. They are full of tips for those who do not live in houses, but live outdoors in tents or travel and live in vehicles. The tips are quite unusual in an under-the-radar way since this kind of living may not be altogether legit. Instructions on how to make temporary shelter from plastic sheets, how to make handles for salvaged buckets, etc. how to shower with a bottle of water with holes punched in it, how to handle human waste, wash clothes, cook; how to lash items to a bicycle and stash items in hidden caches for later retrieval. All in the name of freedom from debt and the burden of a mortgage. Has a hippie flavor to it and includes stories from people's lives and suggestions for camping at festivals. I found it very soothing to read these tips before bed. The tips gave me ideas for emergency scenarios, frugalness, urban camping and make-do fixes.

Portable radio apparatus for survival craft
(a) An approved portable radio apparatus for survival craft complying with the requirements set out
in Regulation 14 of Chapter IV shall be carried in all ships except those on which there is carried on
each side of the ship a motor lifeboat fitted with a radiotelegraph installation complying with the
provisions of Regulation 14 of this Chapter and of Regulation 13 of Chapter IV. All this equipment
shall be kept together in the chartroom or other suitable place ready to be moved to one or other of
the lifeboats in the event of an emergency. However, in tankers of 3,000 tons gross tonnage and
upwards in which lifeboats are fitted amidships and aft this equipment shall be kept in a suitable
place in the vicinity of those lifeboats which are furthest away from the ship's main transmitter.
(b) In the case of ships engaged on voyages of such duration that in the opinion of the
Administration portable radio apparatus for survival craft is unnecessary, the Administration may
allow such equipment to be dispensed with.

Hipsters beware. This is not your “retro-inspired” kind of optical drive that you plug into your laptops and desktop PCs. Actually, this is your uncle’s portable CD player back then when it was cool to carry it around and before the influx of today’s portable digital audio (and video) players — the iPod Classic, the Walkman, Astell&Kern, Plenue and the likes as we knew today.
There’s no “official’ statement that has been released yet from manufacturers on when they will cease production or retire — in a more nicer way to say it — these portables devices. But statistics attest that every year, the sales of these particular devices are dropping — even in the popularity game. Falling behind the digital media race. These portable CD players weren’t able to comeback from the limelight. They suffered a major blow in the digital age.
Today, these portable devices are somewhere out there lying underneath your parents’ bed or kept in a box stored in garages. Some are left behind waiting for a good Samaritan that will pick them up and bring them to their final resting place — an electronic waste management dump sites. Some are lurking in the dark hoping for their deliverance (which is to be recycled). All we have to do for now is to wait on when it will be inducted in the digital wall of fame.

Back in the day, no camping or fishing trip was fully equipped without a good portable radio. Jukebox Saturday Night under the crisp, starry sky, around a campfire. Australia All Over with Macca as you rolled out of your swag to meet the day with a dash of coffee in your rum. Went to buy one for our cyclone emergency kit - took me about five stores before I found one.

This is nice little portable device that I bought at the local fleamarket. The buttons are in pretty bad shape so It needs to be replaced, or in a worst case all will be rehoused in another box and buttons will be replacet with keyboard and regular push buttons. I get response from the local Yamaha service center and I hope it will rock soon.
