Probably one of the most unique/incredible looking tube portable radios I've ever seen. Although dating from the mid to late 50's this looks like it has stepped out of the 1930's with its art deco/streamlined design features. The arrangement of the horizontal lines/bars exude motion and speed. No sharp edges or corners on this radio, the cabinet is rounded and smooth. Simple but bold. Made from a fairly heavy/solid plastic and the red colour is intense. The Wilco badge/script is solid brass.
I'm not going to say this is rare but in all my years of collecting I have never seen another one like it. There may be more hiding in attics, basements or collections somewhere but the internet has not revealed any others to date. Let me know if you've seen this model before, perhaps under a different brand name?
Let's solve the mystery.
Besides outstanding appearances it's a pretty standard 1950's four tube portable featuring a 1R5, 1T4, 1U5 and 3S4 lineup.
Operates on a 1.5 volt A battery and a 67.5 volt B battery.
Dimensions are:
7 1/2 inches or 19 cm wide, 5 1/2 inches or 14 cm tall,
2 inches or 5.5 cm deep.
Not sure who the Japanese manufacturer is.

A spirit lamp from Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. It was owned by a family resident in the town until it was donated to the Museum of the Cumbraes. It is now part of the collection of the museum.
Made of polished steel in two hinged compartments. One containing folding legs and the other the wick and fuel reservoir topped by a round lid. The lid unscrews to let the user pour in the fuel.
Lamps such as these were used when camping and were fuelled by paraffin. Camping became popular in Scotland after the publication of 'Scouting for Boys' in 1908 by Lord Robert Baden-Powell. This encouraged youngsters to develop themselves through outdoor pursuits.

1975 ex-library edition of Chaucer, by Viking Press, which was my go-to publisher for textbooks when I was a liberal arts major in college. This "Portable Chaucer" edition features The Canterbury Tales, Troilus and Cressida, and some shorter poems, edited and translated by Theodore Morrison, 1949.

My new toy - a Macintosh Portable complete with manuals and carry case (not in picture). As with most Portables these days the battery is dead but it will boot using a PowerBook 165c adaptor and some jiggery-pokery. This Portable is the non-backlit model.
Lighting conditions were not so good for this photo, it was taken in the "Mac Attic". Hopefully I'll get some better shots soon.
