Regulation 13

Portable radio apparatus for survival craft

(a) An approved portable radio apparatus for survival craft complying with the requirements set out

in Regulation 14 of Chapter IV shall be carried in all ships except those on which there is carried on

each side of the ship a motor lifeboat fitted with a radiotelegraph installation complying with the

provisions of Regulation 14 of this Chapter and of Regulation 13 of Chapter IV. All this equipment

shall be kept together in the chartroom or other suitable place ready to be moved to one or other of

the lifeboats in the event of an emergency. However, in tankers of 3,000 tons gross tonnage and

upwards in which lifeboats are fitted amidships and aft this equipment shall be kept in a suitable

place in the vicinity of those lifeboats which are furthest away from the ship's main transmitter.

(b) In the case of ships engaged on voyages of such duration that in the opinion of the

Administration portable radio apparatus for survival craft is unnecessary, the Administration may

allow such equipment to be dispensed with.
