Patricia Trijbits is the brains behind 'Where The Pancakes Are' - a pancake centric popup that has turned carbloading into some kind of religious ritual. I was invited to go down and find where the pancakes are (protip: they're currently at The Proud Archivistâ¦but not for much longer!). It is all very scenic and located by the Regents Canal, though I showed up on a bloody freezing Friday evening, so you couldn't really see all that much asides from light reflecting off of the water (which was also kinda cool)

So yeah - what's the big deal about pancakes, you ask? Good point - these are no ordinary crepes, or American style stacks. Oh no. They are 'Buttermilk Buckwheat Pancakes' - made using a blend of buckwheat flower, buttermilk and uhâ¦other stuff. These are, on their own, the best tasting pancakes I've ever had. Each one of them, if you were to take away the topping, is rich, creamy and thick, but not in the indigestion inspiring manner of the buckwheat pancakes I used to make at home. With the perilously placed topping they are almost entirely impossible to eat, which is part of the fun.

I tried a few different flavours, both sweet and savoury. For an idea of flavour combinations, think some topped with kumquat and Cointreau cream, or another topped with oak smoked salmon, chives, hollandaise, asparagus and red amaranth. Some seriously fkn gastro pancake shit going down here. They also do small stacks for children - tiny discerning children. With all the flavours on offer, I can't imagine pancake lovers not losing their shit completely over at least one of these.

Patricia, is an affable and outgoing woman with an unusual accent I eventually work out is Dutch. She told me about her experience of growing up in the 'pancake heavy' culture of Holland. The idea for WTPA supposedly was inspired by a trip to France (I think Britanny) - where the locals are very keen on enjoying their pancakes with a cold glass of cider. To this end she also seems to have some deal with Aspall Cyder because there are bottles of it everywhere. Ever had the 'Grand Cru'? It's bodacious.

She apparently has plans to start a restaurant (possibly in Fitzrovia) in the near future. If Patricia keeps or improves upon this level of quality, WTPA are gonna do very well indeed!

A popup thunderstorm right in my area in San Jose on St. Patrick's Day. Just awesome! Unsettled weather occurred around town this day. Skies went from mostly clear to stormy as the day progressed. Heavy rain, hail, and even thunder & lightning was witnessed. This interesting weather was thanks to a low pressure area that was slowly moving southeastward along the coast, into the state, ushering in an unstable air mass aloft. Certainly, the storm door had finally opened this month for the Bay Area which we've been anxiously waiting for so long! (Tuesday afternoon, March 17, 2020)

*Weather scenario/update:

Widespread rain had soaked the Bay Area over the weekend as the most significant precip the region has seen in 6 weeks finally arrived. Showery conditions were to persist until Wednesday & after a brief lull, another storm was in the forecast for next weekend. "The storm door opened and it’s going to remain open," said Matt Mehle, a forecaster with the NWS Bay Area office. The cold front that had hit the Bay Area over the weekend was associated with a low pressure area offshore. On this day, on St. Patrick’s Day, the low had inched southeast ushering in an unstable air mass over our region behind the cold front, ushering in showers & t-storms. Severe weather such as small hail & t-storms have occurred this afternoon especially around the South Bay. Hail, thunder, lightning & heavy downpours were all observed around my area. The rain (and snow) is a welcome sight as the region didn't see any throughout the entire month of February. Despite the recent rains, we were still well-below average, with most locations ranging from 40-50% of normal... Recently, we have received more rainfall in most locations than we did in the last month & a half! That goes to show how dry we were... Anyway, stay safe out there during this coronavirus pandemic!

Tasting Britain were invited down to the launch of Doubletree by Hillton's latest popup - Nantucket Beach Club, down in lovely Tower Bridge - presumably because of our well/not well publicised propensity for saying yes to pretty much anything that involves a bar on the rooftop of a building.

As usual, I didn't really read the press release, preferring instead to be ambushed by the kind of serendipity and wonderment that you get from a cocktail bar on top of building ;D Heading along with my buddy Dom, we got the chance to get balls deep in a ballsy selection of their ballsy cocktails (which are on the whole pretty great, whilst also being pretty expensive).

Also available was food. Said food was seaside themed - think lobsters, mussels, scallops, crabs (with spiky carapaces that cause small scale hand injuries). Dom's Cornish so his standards for seafood are particularly high - however, we managed to find something for everyone (and by everyone I mean me). The best was probably some kind of fried squid thing that was moorish YET elusive. Unlike lobsters, which were quite easy to come by.

We stayed near til the end, making the most of the sunset (which was glorious) and the free blankets (which is why there are photos of me looking a bit like a guy in a cloak but who doesn't quite understand what material a cloak should be made of).

garnishing: seared duck breast, confit leg, cabbage, miso simmered turnips, thai basil, opal basil, cilantro, scallion
