Whitby is a popular seaside town on the Yorkshire Coast at the mouth of the River Esk.

As far back as the Middle Ages it had an established Herring and Whale fleet.

It is renowned as the town in which Captain Cook learned seamanship and where his exploration ship HMS Endeavour was built.

James Cook made three epic voyages to the western Pacific between 1768 and 1779, becoming, it is believed, the first European to chart the east coast of Australia and much of New Zealand.

Settlement in Whitby dates back to 656 A.D.

The first Monastery was destroyed during Viking raids in the 9th. Century.

The present Abbey ruins stand high on Whitby’s East Cliff as an unmissable landmark.

Its demise, like so many others, came as a result of

King Henry V111’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th. Century.

Whitby’s fishing fleets still exist but have declined in recent centuries.

The Whaling fleet has gone because of moral and ecological reasons.

The status quo came to see it as cruel and unnecessary.

Shipbuilding too, has greatly diminished, but boats do still cross the North Sea, trading with Scandinavia.

As with so many seaside locations around the British coast,

tourism began to grow following the coming of the railway in 1839.

Similarly to places like Royal Tunbridge Wells, Leamington Spa and Harrogate, the discovery of Chalybeate springs in the town encouraged wealthier families to benefit from the medicinal waters.

If it was good enough for Royalty, it was good enough for them.

Now, the town is a very popular holiday resort for day-trips, week-ends and longer holidays.

It could be seen as a good base to visit many valued locations in North and East Yorkshire.

However, the North York Moors to the west of the town

can be seen as a major physical barrier to getting there.

Thus, the local roads infrastructure needs developing, and this

can make the town feel remote and a tad inaccessible.

However, my visit this time, being in late evening, was well rewarded with a splendid sunset.

Puppets of Brussels' Folk Tradition

The Royal Toone Theatre is the only traditional puppet theatre in Brussels still in operation.

It was around 1830 that Antoine Genty, known as "Toone," opened his "poechenellekelder" (a type of puppet theatre).

Far from being a relic of the past, José Géal Toone VII opened the Royal Toone Theatre to Europe, adapting his shows into English... but also into Spanish, Italian, and German.

the conversion of constantine

the conversion of constantine, and thereby the late roman empire, has had an enormous impact on world history. i have always wondered how a break away minor jewish sect based on the short and confused ministry of yeshua ben pantera was transformed into the christian juggernaut. the early christian community (from the death of yeshua to the 4th century) was an often persecuted lot. the common history is that christ appeared to constantine before the battle at pons milvius (where constantine was leading a machiavellian challenge for the control of the western half of the roman empire against the legitimate emperor) and bid him to follow the banner of the cross to victory. after said victory under said banner, constantine relaxed proscriptions against the christian community, and eventually adopted christianity as the legal state religion of the empire. this formal sanction led to the explosive political growth of the church [catholic and otherwise] and is the reason we worship christ the savior.

however, but for a figurative coin toss of history, we would be praying to mithra the redeemer. mithra who? you say. mithraism was another near east faith based on a son of god as savior motif very popular in the eastern half of the roman empire at the time of constantine.

mithra:

the cult of mithra (sidebar) was revered as a light-bringer, a protector and judge of immortal souls. mithra the god-figure remained celibate throughout his life, and valued self-control, renunciation and resistance to sensuality among his worshippers. mithras represented a system of ethics in which brotherhood was encouraged in order to unify against the forces of evil. mithraic rituals involved the symbolic consumption of wine/blood and bread/flesh, baptismal purification, and celebrated the birthday of mithra on december 25th. sound familar? consider then, that the myth of mithra predates christianity by many many centuries. cross-pollination of myths and ethos in the ancient near east was very common. it is important to understand that there is no single pure theology. they are all quilt-work.

the mithraic belief system was focused on the role of mithra as enforcer of truth. the avesta, the zoroastrian holy book, relates that ahura-mazda, the zoroaster Lord figure, sent mithra to guarantee the sanctity of promises and bonds. in fact, mithra is persian for 'contract'. mithras was worshipped as guardian of arms, and patron of soldiers and armies. the handshake was developed by those who worshipped him as a token of friendship and as a gesture to show that you were unarmed. when mithras later became the Roman god of contracts, the handshake gesture was imported throughout the mediterranean and europe by roman soldiers.

mithraism was adopted first by the roman legions garrisoned in the east during the republic. i presume they were attracted to its emphasis on honor, strength, and action. by the late empire under diocletian (284 - 305 AD), mithra was the de facto (and de jure) state religion. mithraic temples, known as mithraeum, were found at all corners of the empire, from northern england to northern africa.

mithraism was a revealed mystery faith. you did not merely convert to mithraism with a ritual baptism and declaration of submission. like the free masons, you had to be chosen and initiated in secret ceremonies into the ranks of the believers. perhaps this was a critical shortcoming of the faith in competition against the more liberal membership rites of christianity. an initiate was first required to prove their courage and strength in tests of danger (crossing swift rivers, jumping through fire bound and blindfolded, etc...) the mithraic initiation process led the acolyte through seven stages of greater revealed knowledge: Corax (Raven), Nymphus (Male Bride), Miles (Soldier), Leo (Lion), Peres (Persian), Heliodromus (Sun-Runner), and Pater (Father); each respective grade protected by Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, the Moon, the Sun, and Saturn.

mithraism was the faith of the realm for several centuries before constantine supplanted it. but for his conversion, the west, and the world would be a dramatically different place.

A great place to grow!

The Blue Tit is a popular and easy to recognise garden favourite. With its small size and distinctive blue and yellow plumage , the Blue tit is a regular garden visitor that’s wide spread throughout the British Isles and mainland Europe. The Blue Tit is a member of the Tit family of birds , Paridae . Usually resident , the bird does not migrate and in fact most stay within a short distance from where they hatch , typically less than 20 miles.

The Blue Tit is around 12 cm long with a wingspan of 18 cm and weighs between 11- 20 g . With a blue crown and dark line passing through the eye, with white cheeks to the chin. The forehead and a bar on the wing are white. The nape, wings and tail are blue and the back is yellowish green. The underparts is mostly yellow with a dark line down the abdomen. Both male and female adult birds have a similar appearance.

The Blue tit will nest in any suitable hole in a tree, wall, or stump, or an artificial nest box, competing with Great Tits and House Sparrows for nesting sites. The same hole ( nesting site ) is returned to every year, and when one pair dies another pair will takes possession of the nesting site. It is estimated that there are 3,300,000 breeding pairs in the UK.

The successful breeding of chicks is dependent on sufficient supply of green caterpillars as well as satisfactory weather. Breeding seasons may be affected badly if the weather is cold and wet between May and July, particularly if this coincides with the emergence of the caterpillars on which the nestlings are fed.

Eggs are small in size, 14–18 mm in diameter. The egg size does vary, depending mostly on the size of individual females and habitat . The nesting material is usually moss, wool, hair and feathers, and the eggs are laid in April or May. The number in the clutch can be very large with seven or eight eggs laid by a single female. During the incubation period, female blue tits perform all of the incubation, however the male feeds the female during this time.

The Blue Tits diet is made up of small insects and spiders during the summer months supplemented by fruit , nuts and the young buds of trees and plants. The bird has adapted and evolved the ability to digest milk and cream and is an acrobatic favourite on bird feeders up and down the country.

Lille, in September, I'm sitting in a subway on my way downtown. A family is sitting in front of me. I do not know what to think. A feeling of sadness and poverty. I think that the country is in decline, that people have given up, they are tired of fighting, they are tired of hearing the same old promises. Unemployment is, eat fat and cheap, the crisis has settled for long. Yes, I feel sad.

In recent years the Volkswagen Passat has gained much more of an image but before the 1996 revamp it was considered by most to be a typical efficient, but bland offering from this European manufacturer. This example of the increasingly rare B3 variant of the Passat is seen here in a disabled parking space in a Bedfordshire town - the vehicle passed me at a roundabout and I followed in order to get this shot! New on 1st August 1993, this Passat had close to 150,000 miles on it at it's last MOT, but has been averaging around 5-10,000 miles over the past few years. It is certainly a rare survivor.

Vineyards of Missiano

Weinberge von Missian

This very pleasant hiking tour leads you to three popular castles: Castel d’Appiano, Castel Boymont and Castel Corba

Our starting point is the small village of Missiano in the municipality of Appiano. Having reached the car parking space underneath Castel Corba, we start our hiking tour on an asphalted street. Very soon we can see two of the castles on our tour: first Castel Corba and than Castel Boymont, which lies a little further above in the woods.

Later on, the trail leads us along vineyards and fruit orchards, presenting wonderful views to the valley and the city of Bolzano. Soon afterwards we reach a farm, which we simply cross, staying on the asphalted street. At the beginning of the wood we follow trail no. 12 until the so-called „castle trail“ (in German „Burgenweg“). Having gained height on a small steep track the trail goes on on a series of serpentines until we finally reach the tower „Kreideturm“.

We pass the „Kreideturm“, keep to the left and continue until we reach an asphalted forest street which will finally lead us to Castel d’Appiano. Before the trail gets steeper we decide to stop and drink some water we brought with us in our rucksacks. Continuing our hiking, we soon arrive at our first destination, the Castel d’Appiano. A breathtaking view to the valley and the city of Bolzano is welcoming us here! Having taken some fotos, we decide to explore the inside of the castle. Passing a small bridge we reach the castle’s gate and enter the courtyard. In the castle’s tavern we treat ourselves with some refreshing drinks.

After a short visitation we continue our hiking tour towards Castel Boymont, passing some horses and pigs who are looking at us half asleep. We follow the track steeply downwards to a gorge where we take some steps and cross a little bridge before we walk upwards again to reach the other side where we can once again enjoy the great view to the castle and its chapel. We continue our hike through the wood (trail no. 14), finally arriving at our next destination, Castel Boymont. After a short visitation, we enjoy the warming autumn sunlight.

Starting our way back we take the same trail on which we came to Castel Boymont. After a few metres we turn into the trail that leads us back to Castel Corba.

Please note: This hiking tour is particularly recommendable in spring and autumn and very suitable for families since castles and their courtyards are great playgrounds for children who like adventures.
