This is my silly beautiful niece, Tanner. We were just goofing around making her dress up like a dork (it runs in the family). She is 5 years old like my son Zachary. Don't be deceived, she doesn't need any of this gear to swim, she is part fish. Other than my 2 year old nephew Trent, all of the Coughlin grandkids can swim like fish now without floaties, even little Madison my 3 year old daughter.

I've always loved natural pools. Making plants and fish balanced enough to keep a pool clear and clean enough to swim in is an art. Bedding them in so they look perfect in their environment is another skill! So mixing this dream and my experiences of drooling over the greenhouse pools of plants at Kew Gardens inspired me to create my own version when I saw this great build from Trompe Loeil.

The Pool House at Whiteface Lodge, Lake Placid, NY, has a heated indoor pool the extends outside. Swim under the bridge and you can stay warm in the frigid air as the steam wafts upwards. There are also hot tubs alongside the outdoor section of the pool.

Holga 120n

Briarcliff Mansion through the lens of my Holga. I think the Holga really captures the soul of this place (actually I think the Holga captures the soul of most old places). Once grand and magnificent, now lonely and forgotten after many tumultuous years. Once the home of the heir to the Coca Cola fortune, sold to become a mental hospital, now mostly forgotten with little hope of attaining the glory it had.

Now I get to relax in the pool, enjoying the gentle splashes of the koi as they come to the surface and the scent of the plants in this glorious space.

I always loved the pattern of the rocks on the building of the swimming pool in Drumright which is closed now.
Echoes from a warmer time. I cleaned my driveway and truck windows about three hours ago and my feet are still cold.
I still like the pure black background best.
A panorama I did of a recently-built swimming pool. This was a 12 shot combo from the back deck of the house. There are a few stitching flaws visible, but overall I'm pleased with the result.
The perspective changes are very interesting. For example, the whole thing is a rectangular area, but the front fence appears to be an arc, and the angle between the back wall and the right wall looks to be far wider than its true 90 degrees.
African Blue Basil 🌿 In My Garden
This basil has flowers all year round. This particular plant has survived for four years so far. Each year it has more flowers. Cutting or picking out exhausted flower stalks keeps it blooming heavily. I cover it during winter freezes in Tucson, Arizona.
Family:Lamiaceae (lay-mee-AY-see-ee) (Info)
Genus:Ocimum (OSS-ih-mum) (Info)
Cultivar:African Blue
Additional cultivar information:(aka Kasar)
Mountain Valley Growers in California says:
"Ocimum kilimandscharicum x basilicum purpureum"
"All basils make tasty flowers, but African Blue Basil's flowers are pink with a dark purple calyx instead of the usual white flower with a green calyx found on most Basils, making them attractive, and tasty, for salads, drinks or garnishes.
Because African Blue Basil is sterile and never makes a seed, flower stems are longer, up to 18 inches, and bloom time is until frost. Individual flowers can be plucked from the stem or whole stem segments can be used for a dramatic addition to a culinary bouquet.
Add African Blue Basil Flowers to sour cream for baked potatoes, top your favorite pasta dish with them or float them in ice trays and add to ginger ale, champagne or white wine spritzers.
African Blue Basil is more suited to indoor growing than most basils. If you want to over winter the plant, either grow it through the summer in a pot and move it in before frost or grow it in the ground and take tip cuttings in early fall. These are easily started in a glass of water (change the water every day) and then transferred to a pot for the winter.
Basils do not dry well, but leaves and flowers can be pureed with olive oil and frozen for winter use. Use about 3 cups leaves to 1/3 cup olive oil and store flat in small resealable bags.

Finding some projects and experiments left undone from the summer. A little dramatic, but a fun exercise with a flash and a composite image. I tried this a month earlier and felt I didn't get enough flash coverage. Also had some items laying around the deck, leaving it a looked unkept. So this shot is a retake and trying fix some mistakes and lessons learned.
Can't remember why the I had the settings that I did, but I'm thinking f/8 would have made more sense. It is really a timing thing when to start in the evening and how long will it take to do a complete shoot. Still even at f/6.3 the focus worked at 16mm.
Strobist and shot details: To start the shoot I took 5 different exposures as a base. Then picked one exposure to work from as I walked the flash around the pool and backyard. I had the SB800 on a mono pole with a flash remote trigger and a radiopopper jrx. I walked around and hit the shot closer on different parts of the backyard filling out the image. It is more of an approach to accent certain parts of the scene. I think it took over 50 pictures and closed out the shoot with another 5 exposure shoots. The rest is a post effort in Photoshop. If this is new, you might want to look up composite editing in Photoshop. A lot of layers and masks.
In Scott Currie's Southamptons poolhouse, walls are painted Harbor Haze and doors are Spellbound, both by Benjamin Moore. Period windows and vintage hardware were used throughout, the floor is paved in bluestone, and vintage signal flags, found on eBay, are displayed above the doors. The folding stool is 19th century.
