Pompano Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. It is located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, just north of Fort Lauderdale and 36 miles north of Miami. The nearby Hillsboro Inlet forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to 6.14 million people in 2020. As of the 2020 census, the population was 112,046, making it the sixth-largest city in Broward County, the ninth-largest city in the South Florida metropolitan area, and the 20th-largest city in Florida.

Pompano Beach is currently in the middle of a redevelopment process to revitalize its beachfront and historic downtown. The city has also been listed as one of the top real estate markets, being featured in CNN, Money and the Wall Street Journal as one of the country's top vacation home markets. Pompano Beach Airpark, located within the city, is the home of the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation.

Its name is derived from the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), a fish found off the Atlantic coast.

There had been scattered settlers in the area from at least the mid-1880s, but the first documented permanent residents of the Pompano area were George Butler and Frank Sheen and their families, who arrived in 1896 as railway employees. The first train arrived in the small Pompano settlement on February 22, 1896. It is said that Sheen gave the community its name after jotting down on his survey of the area the name of the fish he had for dinner. The coming of the railroad led to development farther west from the coast. In 1906 Pompano became the southernmost settlement in newly created Palm Beach County. That year, the Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed on the beach.

On July 3, 1908, a new municipality was incorporated in what was then Dade County: the Town of Pompano. John R. Mizell was elected the first mayor. In 1915, Broward County was established, with a northern boundary at the Hillsboro Canal. Thus, within eight years, Pompano had been in three counties. Pompano Beach experienced significant growth during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. In 1940, the U.S. Supreme Court disallowed forced confessions in Chambers v. Florida, a dispute stemming from a murder in Pompano Beach.

Following the population boom due to World War II, in 1947 the City of Pompano merged with the newly formed municipality on the beach and became the City of Pompano Beach. In 1950, the population of the city reached 5,682. Like most of southeast Florida, Pompano Beach experienced great growth in the late 20th century as many people moved there from northern parts of the United States. A substantial seasonal population also spends its winters in the area. The city of Pompano Beach celebrated its centennial in 2008.

Hillsboro Inlet Park, Pompano Beach, FL

Monday morning I was treated to a spectacular sunrise at the Hillsboro Inlet. The clouds were just right. As the sun was rising - it was still well below the horizon at this point - it illuminated the high level clouds, coloring them in incredible shades of pink and red.

I hope everyone has a great last day of 2015. Hard to believe this is it. This year just flew by...

The garage includes an array of iconic architecture features including canvas wrapped and LED-lit sails surrounding all sides, landscaped rooftop deck, a glass elevator overlooking the ocean, and a larger-than-life aquatic mural.

The Pompano Beach Pier Parking Garage is the first public parking garage in the City of Pompano Beach and is being funded by parking revenues generated by the structure. “We have set the stage for future development in our City with this landmark project,” said Mayor Lamar Fisher. “We didn’t just want a garage; we wanted to create something iconic that will have a lasting impression.”

The Pier Parking Garage is located at NE 2nd Street between A1A and Pompano Beach Boulevard. In addition to adding an additional 663 spaces to the beachfront area, the project will also include the City’s first Tourism Visitor Center on the ground floor and the development of two new streets – Pier Street and Seabreeze Way. The City’s investment in this project has paved the way for future first-class amenities for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, Hillsboro Beach, FL

Here's another shot from probably was my favorite shoot in 2014 - sunrise at the Hillsboro Inlet shot from the north jetty.

I really didn't go out too often in 2014 and I am trying to change that for 2015. I was getting tired of shooting the same old, same old again and again. But looking through my uploads I realized that I haven't visited quite a few of my (formerly) favorite places in a long time. Can it really be?

Hi everyone. I took a couple days and went over to the other coast and spent the night with my friend Anne. Yesterday we went to Butterfly World. So many different butterflies there. We had a great time. I will do my best to catch up, tho I don't think I will be able to view everything from the last 2 days, I will do my best.

Hillsboro Inlet, Pompano Beach, FL

I woke up at 4:20 am this morning and for a change was wide awake. The weather forecast reported fair to partly cloudy skies and no rain in the morning. So off I was at 4:45 to drive to Pompano Beach and revisit the Hillsboro Lighthouse.

This time instead of shooting from the beach I focused more on this wooden structure at the inlet. I am wondering what it is for or what it once was. It reminds me a bit of railroad tracks.

Anyhow, around the summer solstice the sun should be coming up behind the lighthouse. So there I was, standing and waiting and getting eaten alive by No-See-Ums. They were so bad that I had to leave. Damn those buggers.

TGIF! And let's hope we get some sunshine this weekend. The last few days here have been quite miserable. It rained, it poured, it rained some more... I was considering trading my car in for a submarine. Took me forever last night finding a route home that wasn't flooded. :-(
