The fragrance is glorious!!
Raiatea, meaning "faraway heaven" or "sky with soft light" in the Polynesian language, is the most sacred island in the South Pacific and believed to be the first of the windward islands colonised by the early Polynesians newly arrived from Hawaii. This aerial picture, taken with a non-digital Zeiss camera, shows the island on the right surrounded by a deep blue lagoon enclosed by a spectacular coral reef part of which shows up at the left lower end.

Raiatea, French Polynesia, Pacific ocean,
Raiatea, is the second largest of the Society Islands, after Tahiti, in French Polynesia. The island is widely regarded as the 'centre' of the eastern islands in ancient Polynesia and it is likely that the organised migrations to Hawaii, New Zealand and other parts of East Polynesia started at Ra'iatea. A traditional name for the island is believed to be Havai'i.
Situated on the south east coast is the historical Taputapuatea marae which was established by 1000AD.
