We just spotted the Bureau of Land Management’s Seymour Antelope looking at native thistles in Utah for Pollinator Week!
“Native thistles produce a lot of nectar and pollen, so they are very popular with all types of pollinators!” - Seymour Antelope
Seymour encourages you to appreciate Utah’s native thistles, even though they often receive an undeserved bad reputation due to negative impacts caused by other non-native species sharing the same common name. Utah public lands support 19 species of native thistle! Native thistle produces copious amounts of nectar that supports a wide range of native pollinators including bumble bees, solitary bees, butterflies and moths.

A pollinator event for youth was held in Chamberlain, SD. Special thanks to NRCS, South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks, and the local Pheasants Forever Chapter for helping make this a successful event. 50 students were able to make seed balls, learn about different ingredients that require pollination, and many more pollinator themed activities. King gentian is prevalent in deeper wetland lake waters, It is just coming into flower. The purple flowers don't generally open fully to show the stamens. When I found an early flower for a picture, a bee had burrowed into a closed flower. It seems that honey bees are the target pollinator.
