A recent visit to a dragon fruit farm near Sepang, Selangor, was most educational. Pollination is done manually by human hands with a brush at night when the flowers bloom then. By daytime, the flowers start to close.
The farmers then wrap the flowers with newspapers to keep out the rain.

Conversion of natural forests, meadows, and streambanks to agricultural monocultures, pavement, and concrete-lined ditches has dramatically reduced the abundance and diversity of flowering plants on our landscape, which has resulted in disappearance of many pollinator insects. The plants need the pollinators, of course, to move pollen among flowers, but the pollinators need the plants, too. We can help native pollinators by planting flowering plants around our homes and along roadsides.

Oberlin's pollinator garden lives in an open atrium in the Science Center. The garden is visited by bees, birds, and several species of insects. Before entering the space, students slip on bee suits and head gear.

More colonies of honey bees are owned and operated in California than in any other state. California usually leads the nation in honey production. The colonies in this photograph were placed in this quiet grove to pollinate the grapes just behind. There is a general lack of agreement on the relative value of pollinating insects on the cultivars of grapes known to benefit from cross-pollination. Some insist that the insects cannot be depended upon while others give major credit to the honey bees and associate their visitation with increased yield and improved quality of grapes. There is a mistaken belief that bees damage the grapes even though this claim has been disproved repeatedly for years. While it's true that honey bees do at times feed on the juice of grapes after the skin is broken, the colonies can easily be removed before the grapes are ripe.

looking after the pollinators of our garden....Aquilegia flowers freely early summer and they love it, I allow it to self seed, lots of doff colours, they adore them and so do I. I talked to a lovely lady at the RSPB stand at Emley Show yesterday and she had a small log pile and small holes drilled into the logs too. I asked what these were for, and she said that frogs hibernate over the winter in the gaps between the logs, and solitary bees ( also v impt to pollination ) will lie dorment over the winter in the holes that were drilled in the logs. Something we could all put at the bottom of our garden.
