The wee pollinator was no bigger than perhaps a 1/4 inch on the rosebud.

A female Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) nectars on Ground Ivy (Glechoma Hederacea) at Skylarks Nature Reserve near Nottingham. The butterfly's head and thorax fur are interacting with the flower's reproductive parts but I don't know if they are female or hermaphrite.
(Wilson, Michigan) – A native plants restoration and pollinator protection workshop in July 2012 was held at the Hannahville Indian Community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and attended by the representatives of five Michigan and Wisconsin Native American communities.
At the end of the workshop, students from the Hannahville Indian School (Nah Tah Wahsh PSA) enjoyed planting saplings including apple trees on April 12, 2012 at the Hannahville Indian Community nation.
The planting and a workshop are part of the U.S. Forest Service-funded Zaagkii Wings and Seeds Project.
With smiles on their faces and dirt on their hands, the students had fun planting the apple tree and cedar tree saplings.

During the Hannahville workshop, a northern Michigan Native American elder said he believes something is amiss in nature and encouraged tribal communities to join with non-tribal partners for pollinator protection and the restoration of native plants.
A crisis is imminent.
Honeybees and native pollinators such as bumblebees are declining at alarming rates as the native plants that sustain them are decreasing due to habitat loss via non-native invasive plants.
“It is your responsibility – as well as ours – to be tenders of the garden,” said Earl Meshigaud, Hannahville Potawatomi Indian Community Tribal Council Member and Culture Department Director. “That’s what we were put here for – to take care of God’s Creation.”
The workshop and other related projects like a tribal greenhouse are examples of Native American tribes and the U.S. Forest Service working together to restore native plants and protect pollinators.

The Hannahville meeting was the third in a series of Zaagkii Project/U.S. Forest Service tribal workshops in northern Michigan.
Prior workshops were held in July 2012 at KBIC and July 2011 at Presque Isle Park in Marquette.
The fourth workshop will be on Thursday, Sept. 13 and Friday, Sept., 14, 2012 at Lac Vieux Desert (LVD) near Watersmeet, Michigan.
The LVD workshop will include pollinator protection and native plants restoration information with a focus on wild rice, among other topics.
Zaagkii Project sponsors include Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, United States Forest Service (USFS), Marquette County Juvenile Court, U.P. Children's Museum and the Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University
The Zaagkii Project is coordinated by the Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides services and initiates projects in the areas of mental health, religion and the environment.

Floral symmetry refers to whether, and how, a flower can be divided into two or more identical or mirror-image parts.
Most flowers are actinomorphic ("star shaped"), meaning they can be divided into symmetrical halves by more than one longitudinal plane passing through the axis, much as a pie can be cut into several equal and identical pieces. In these flowers, the petals are usually similar in shape, size, and color. Such flowers are also called radially symmetrical or regular flowers. Examples of actinomorphic flowers are the lily (Lilium, Liliaceae) and the buttercup (Ranunculus, Ranunculaceae).
Zygomorphic ("yoke shaped") flowers can be divided by only a single plane into two mirror-image halves, much like a yoke or a person's face. Examples are orchids and the flowers of most members of the Lamiales (e.g., Scrophulariaceae and Gesneriaceae). Zygomorphic flowers generally have petals of two more different shapes, sizes, and colors. Least commonly, flowers may be asymmetrical; they cannot be divided into two identical or mirror-image halves on any plane. Such flowers are typical of most members of the Zingiberales, such as cannas and various gingers. In most cases, different kinds of floral symmetry are linked to particular pollinators.
Actinomorphic flowers are a basal angiosperm character; zygomorphic flowers are a derived character that has evolved many times.[1]
Some familiar and seemingly actinomorphic flowers, such as those of daisies and dandelions (Asteraceae), are actually clusters of tiny zygomorphic flowers arranged into a radially symmetric inflorescence.
Peloria or a peloric flower refers to an aberration in which a plant that normally produces zygomorphic flowers produces actinomorphic flowers instead. This aberration can be developmental, or it can have a genetic basis: the CYCLOIDEA gene controls floral symmetry. Peloric Antirrhinum plants have been produced by knocking out this gene.[1] Many modern cultivars of Sinningia speciosa ("gloxinia") have been bred to have peloric flowers as they are larger and showier than the normally zygomorphic flowers of this species.
Bees come in all shapes and sizes and so do flowers. This bumble bee can reach far into a salvia flower to grab the pollen.

I was out watching the bees today, and unlike last year(s), every bee I saw was fully loaded with pollen. A good sigh indeed !!!

It's been much too long since I've done a Miscellany post. With the new growth of our late spring-early summer, I plan to get back into the swing of things.

In Britain, insect visitors to the Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera) are uncommon and the flower is usually self pollinated. However, on the continental mainland of Europe, this and many other Ophrys species have specialist insect pollinators, which are attracted to them by pseudopheromones (false female scents).
The pseudopheromones persuade male insects to try to mate with the flower. Pollinia are much modified anthers, containing pollen. The pollinia become attached to the insect, which then flies to another flower and thus transfers the pollen.
In the image shown of the bee orchid in Britain, when the flower first opens (see previous image), the pollinia are hidden in the ‘hood’ at the top of the flower. After a day or two, self pollination usually occurs. The pollinia fall down and are blown by wind into contact with the sticky stigma - as shown in this image.
