Plant sex in action! ;-) The fuzzy stigma having done its job in capturing pollen grains from a visiting pollinator, now it's the pollens' turn to grow fertilization tubes down the style to find the ovules below.

Am I weird to think these little guys are cute?

Important pollinator in the Upper Sonoran Desert region. My silly dog loves to bulldoze her way through the grass: Nose down, rump up, chest to the mud. This pollen coated, sneezing beast is the net result.

I couldn't resist posting just one more picture of an African daisy :)

This picture of a bee on a flower was taken in Julia’s backyard. The bee is the pollinator because he is the agent that moves pollen from the male anthers of the flower to the female stigma of another flower to accomplish fertilization.

Our annual Sweet 16 Honey-Tasting Tournament gives visitors a chance to vote on their favorite honey from a field of 16 varietal honeys brought in from around the world. The 2011 champ was a wild huckleberry honey from the Pacific Northwest.

PCAGOE Challenge Entry. Springtime means love is in the air, literally. The flowers are making love all over the place, and the bees are helping. Isn't that a great way to think of all that pollen, flowers making love, instead of just runny noses, watery eyes and sneezes.

Cross pollination in Primrose (Primula vulgaris) - the series shows both ‘pin eyed’ and 'thrum eyed' forms of the flower and illustrate the mechanism that ensures cross pollination.

 

Primula vulgaris (Primrose) has two forms of flower, a situation known as heteromorphy. In the two forms, the styles are of different lengths. If the style reaches to the top of the flower tube, it is the 'pin eyed' form, and the anthers are halfway down the tube. In the other form (known as 'thrum eyed'), the style is halfway down the tube and the anthers reach to the top. Heteromorphy is one example of a mechanism that encourages self-pollination.

 

When an insect inserts its proboscis into the flower, pollen is deposited in the right place for the style of the other form of the flower - so pollen from a pin eyed flower reaches the stigma of a thrum eyed flower, and vice versa. The stigma of a thrum eyed flower has short papillae whereas the stigma of a pin eyed flower has long papillae.

 

Pollen grains from a pin eyed flower are small and more likely to stick to the short papillae on the stigma of a thrum eyed flower (than to the longer papillae of a pin eyed flower). The converse occurs with the large pollen grains from a thrum eyed flower.

 

Even if self-pollination does occur, it rarely leads to fertilisation so that heteromorphy in these plants appears to be associated with self-incompatibility.
