Cross pollination in Primrose (Primula vulgaris) - the series shows both ‘pin eyed’ and 'thrum eyed' forms of the flower and illustrate the mechanism that ensures cross pollination.

 

Primula vulgaris (Primrose) has two forms of flower, a situation known as heteromorphy. In the two forms, the styles are of different lengths. If the style reaches to the top of the flower tube, it is the 'pin eyed' form, and the anthers are halfway down the tube. In the other form (known as 'thrum eyed'), the style is halfway down the tube and the anthers reach to the top. Heteromorphy is one example of a mechanism that encourages self-pollination.

 

When an insect inserts its proboscis into the flower, pollen is deposited in the right place for the style of the other form of the flower - so pollen from a pin eyed flower reaches the stigma of a thrum eyed flower, and vice versa. The stigma of a thrum eyed flower has short papillae whereas the stigma of a pin eyed flower has long papillae.

 

Pollen grains from a pin eyed flower are small and more likely to stick to the short papillae on the stigma of a thrum eyed flower (than to the longer papillae of a pin eyed flower). The converse occurs with the large pollen grains from a thrum eyed flower.

 

Even if self-pollination does occur, it rarely leads to fertilisation so that heteromorphy in these plants appears to be associated with self-incompatibility.

Bumble Bees are very important pollinators in my area. When you begin to photograph bees you soon notice that many are very hairy. The backs of Bumble Bees are covered with a heavy coat of hair, light in color. Pollen sticks to the hair, so when a Bumble Bee visits another blossom of the same species it passes along some pollen to that blossom, thus fertilizing the plant.

Found this insect on a flower in my garden. He was super tiny, maybe a centimeter or so in length. The Super Takumar prime 55 got the shot almost perfectly.

Took a break from working to chase this beauty around the yard.

Although most of us think of this as pollination, I believe the bug actually lost it's wallet in there and was trying to retrieve it. But that's just my opinion.

Pollinator at work! I like to think of our yard as a "natural eco-scape." While the random, wandering plants make a "messy", quirky, out-of-control palette, they're still delightful - - - here a crocus, there some daffodils, ah, there's the Jack-in-the-Pulpits, white violets, star of Bethlehem, dead nettle, spring beauty, blue volets. Some homeowners and landscapers think of these as invasives that need to be rooted out with extreme prejudice. Sounds like too much work to me. I'd rather enjoy them and share them with the pollinators. This season's "volunteer" arrival is Fleabane. We have quite a stand of it by the shed. The teeny, tiny flies and bees are loving their daisy-like flowers.
