I sat down for a minute to absorb the awakening marsh and noticed the morning sun touching the lily pads by the boardwalk in Point Pelee National Park.

The black and white warbler (Mniotilta varia) is a small migratory bird found in North America. Measuring 11 to 13 centimeters in length, it stands out with its unique black and white striped plumage. With black upperparts streaked with white, white underparts, and a white stripe above the eye, it has a zebra-like appearance. These warblers inhabit various habitats, including forests and woodlands. They construct cup-shaped nests on the ground or in low tree branches. Known for their distinctive foraging behavior, they climb tree trunks and branches like nuthatches, searching for insects and spiders hidden in the bark. Black and white warblers migrate long distances and spend winters in southern North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Their high-pitched, musical song is heard during the breeding season as males defend territories and attract mates. With their striking black and white plumage and unique foraging style, black and white warblers are a captivating presence in North American forests.

This American Robin appeared to be hunting, possibly for worms, in the tall grass in Rondeau Provincial Park, on the north shore of Lake Erie. It was quietly focusing and tiptoeing in the grass, then pausing, holding still, then lowering and tilting its head. The head feathers would rise and fall during this time. At times it would lower its head without tilting it, and squat low, then leap in the air. This fascinating and persistent behavior continued for a prolonged period of time.

The rising sun catches a blue heron waiting for its breakfast to swim by in Point Pelee National Park. Although I was quite far from him, he seemed annoyed, as though I might disturb his fishing, but didn't flinch a muscle.

I just got back from two great weeks in southern Ontario during Spring Migration: Point Pelee National Park and surrounding areas for 7 days and Long Point for 4 1/2. While the focus was birds of course I got to experience many wonderful sights of other wildlife and scenery too.

Here's my first image from my first full day at Point Pelee. I expect that many more to come over the next couple of weeks as I process my images.

This Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher was foraging along the edge of the east side beach at the "Tip" at Point Pelee. I was fortunately enough to catch it in mid-flight as it flitted from branch to branch.
