From another point of view

Friday evening, weather about to change, a stroll up and back on the pier, this family just leaving.

Politely asked if they had just 'caught' dinner, 'sure did' the father replied.

He placed the bucket on the ground, moved the net and shows his catch, sufficient enough to feed his wife and child, and more than once.

Asked for a photo, explaining - not of the fish, rather you and your family. I want to remember this day.

They gathered around, Mum lifted the prams sun protector, and this is the frame.

Just how lucky are we to have such beautiful people in our area.

Feeling blessed, it completed my day - hopefully, the story, yours.

Mind you, after the next 'chat' along the way, the male fisherman made it clear that he did not wish any photograph taken; I accept that and, by the way, he was kind in his reply.

The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, on a foggy June morning.

Its Third Order Fresnel lens was first lit in 1909, and this lighthouse has served as an aid to mariners ever since.

I used a KITE to fly the camera.

The kite, the kite string, and the camera - Ricoh GR II - were all drenched in condensation when I brought everything down. The camera still works fine.

It was in the summer last year when I saw a picture taken at Pigeon Point. And it was obvious: I needed to visit Pigeon Point myself at my next trip to California. I travel quite frequently and I always carry a camera with me. And I always take photos at my trips.

The opportunity for Pigeon Point came soon, when I was invited to a conference in San Jose, CA in November. Since I live in Germany, I had to arrive a day early to be in time for the first sessions at the conference. So I should be able to spend a couple of hours taking photos right after arrival I thought. And I planned to be at the lighthouse right in time for sunset.

Nevertheless, my plane was finally late at SFO by two hours. The sun had already set when I later arrived at Pigeon Point. But it was not completely dark, yet. I quickly decided to put up my travel-tripod at a cliff and take some long exposures of the lighthouse, the cliff and the sea. I am very pleased with the results.

The photo was taken with a Canon 5D mkiii

In order to capture a wilderness of Indian Ocean, I was standing at par in the reef to make a better view in this spot before getting sunset in the cloudy day. I just stopped my activity when the wave splash on me and my camera (i guess, the wave is higher than 2-4 m). Whitefish Point is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at the extreme southeastern end of Lake Superior. It is a critical turning point for all vessel traffic entering and leaving this largest of all the Great Lakes. The Whitefish Point Light Station was established by Congress in 1849, and is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior. The present light tower was constructed in 1861 during Abraham Lincoln’s administration. Whitefish Point marks the eastern end of a notorious 80-mile stretch of shoreline stretching west to Munising, known ominously as Lake Superior’s Shipwreck Coast. Of the 550 known major shipwrecks lying on the bottom of the lake, at least 200 of them are in the vicinity of Whitefish Point. The 1975 loss of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald with her entire crew of 29 has become a world-wide legend. The wreck of the Fitzgerald lies just 15 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. The Light Station was operated exclusively by the U.S. Lighthouse Service from 1849 until 1923, when the U.S. Coast Guard established a Lifeboat Rescue Station here. The Lighthouse Service merged with the Coast Guard in 1939 and the Coast Guard closed the Lifeboat Station in 1951. All personnel were taken from the site in 1970, and the station was automated in 1971. The light station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, but there was no money for restoration. In 1980, Whitefish Township approached the fledgling Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society for assistance in preserving this important property. The Society obtained a license from the Coast Guard in 1983 to commence museum operations and opened the first exhibits in 1985. The present Shipwreck Museum Building opened in 1987 and features the Edmund Fitzgerald's bell which was recovered from the wreck in 1995 and is rung each November 10th, the anniversary of the sinking, in memory of the 29 crewmen of the Fitzgerald.

Built in 1858, the Point Betsie Lighthouse is still an active navigational aid on Lake Michigan. Located south of Sleeping Bear Dunes and north of Frankfort, Michigan. It was solid clouds and raining when I was there.

Located in the Village of Wind Point in Racine County, Wisconsin, the Wind Point Lighthouse stands 108 feet tall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse was built in 1880 and was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe who had served in the Civil War as a Brigadier General. It was lit for the first time on November 15, 1880 and continues to be lit to this day.

Basilique de Paray-le-Monial : le cloître

Avoiding the grumpy photographer mentioned in a previous post I found my own spot to photograph the lighthouse.

The rocks are very interesting here as they are a bit like those at the giants causeway. Columns of regular shaped rocks and some areas of very geometric shape.

The odd thing was the man made stacks of rocks everywhere. Piled up like childrens building blocks into increasingly elaborate and carefully constructed towers.

Lake Point Tower, 1968, was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s 1922 design for a glass-curtained skyscraper in Berlin. Schipporeit and Heinrich took van der Rohe's unbuilt office building concept and converted it to a residential building. Despite differences — Lake Point Tower is much taller than van der Rohe’s original project, more regular in form, and its exterior glass curtain wall is tinted — many consider it a Mies van der Rohe building. Because of its height and lakeside site, the skyscraper had to be designed to withstand high winds. At the center of the building is a triangular core, 59 feet wide, that contains nine elevators and three stairwells. This core holds all of the vertical weight of the building, allowing the perimeter pillars on the facade to be much smaller. Chicago, November 12, 2016

Ruins of Fort Crown Point, built by British and provincial troops on Lake Champlain in 1759 to guard against French invasion from Canada. A fire destroyed the fort in 1773, leaving only stone officers and soldiers barracks and earthen fortifications behind. During the Revolutionary War the fort was held first by the Americans and then by the British, who abandoned it in 1780, after which it was left to decay. Today the preserved ruins are part of the Crown Point State Historic Site in Crown Point, New York.
