Makore (pronounced Mak-orr-ee, meaning "clouds") came to Tikki Hywood Trust after being retrieved from a poaching case on 02/08/15. She weighed a mere 3.5 kg and is approximately 5 - 7 months old. At this age, it is likely that she would have still been with her mother, learning foraging skills, but she would have been weaned. It is possible that her wound may have been caused by a sharp piece of wire—but, nearly a month later, the wound is almost completely healed.

Mhepo (pronounced Meh-po, meaning “wind”) was retrieved from a poaching incident on 02/21/15. She is also approximately 5 - 7 months old. Luckily, she does not have any injuries—but is thin. Young pangolins must stay with Tikki Hywood Trust to grow up a little more before it is safe to release them. At this age and small size, and without a protective parent, they could be vulnerable to predators. Therefore, pangolins are released once they have improved to a satisfactory condition. I always start with boiling water. The refrigerated eggs cool it down, so the boiling water helps the egg white stay together.
