Pleased to see my first one in Shropshire, thanks to David W!!

He pinged off after I took this shot though (the cricket, not David!), so couldn't improve on it!

large red damselflies (Pyrrhosoma nymphula)

eggs going into my new pond! The pond is only a week old today and I have damsels already!

so many pond scaters and water beetles have appeared too.

My key objective for this garden wildlife pond is to try to get damsels and dragonflies to come. So seeing this pair today was wonderful.

Good morning everyone. To end the week I'm pleased to present two quick pics of one of my favorite woodpeckers, being the Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) starting with the above male. I also included a pic of a female, which can be found in the comment section and my stream.

Usually a very common bird, nearly as numerous as its cousin the Downy Woodpecker, I'm seeing very few this Fall season. Which has been colder than normal. Just two to be exact. Same with Northern Flickers, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, of which I haven't seen any in recent months. Although not normally migratory birds they will migrate south in harsh winters. I'm beginning to wonder if they know something we don't since except for the Pileated Woodpecker I usually see a fair share of them during autumn and winter. In some cases as with the Northern Flicker, they visit more often.

I'm curious if anyone else is seeing less woodpeckers in their area in recent months or weeks.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and weekend.

The people you can see are crossing the Seine on the Pont des Arts . The Institut de France, is a French learned society, grouping five académies, including the Académie française.

Was so pleased to find lots of 2-pot ladybirds last weekend!! Easily saw a dozen, and that was on the lower branches of a huge tree! That's compared to 3 or 4 harlequins!! Would be so happy to see these lovely little natives bounce back!

First one of 2010, def not very pleased with outcome but a bit of fresh air nonetheless.

Very pleased to see this, had seen it on the move about 4 years prior and assumed it'd be dead at this point.

2 days shy of being with the same owner for 2 decades.

J Davy are the biggest Vauxhall dealer in Basingstoke and are still open.

So pleased I made the trip to Redcliffe this morning. It just highlights that there doesn't have to be red skies to make a sunrise spectacular.

I'm very pleased with how this turned out. NS 8122 splits the signals at Control Point Magnolia in some steady rain.

Pleased to release this new Oak tree for your landscaping pleasure, complete with season change HUD and new custom LOD method.

I was/am so pleased with how my de-bayered SIGMA fp has performed that I couldn't resist going for a de-bayered SIGMA fp L (61MP). I finally go the chance to try it out in November, having managed to chase down a small hole in the clouds in northern Italy. The conditions were hard: The wind-side of the car was covered with ice before I had finished the set-up, so that I run out of juice before I could get all the data I wanted, nevertheless im still really pleased with the result. There is some really nice "smoking gun" effects in the S-II data that I wasn't aware of before (and didn't see in the 5 minute subs) so I will definitely be looking for an off-center composition next time i'm out ...

Star colour from a SIGMA fp shot separately.

Images processed in AstroPixelProcessor and completed to taste in Photoshop. Total time around 2,5 hours ...

PS start point: Ha Red / S-II Red+Green / O-III Green+Blue / star colours are uncalibrated.

I must admit I'm pretty easy going. And pretty easily pleased too. Not too much fazes me. Although with age I seem to have become a touch sentimental and emotional. So if all the other beings on the beach are stiff, upright clones, I would be this one, acting different and laid back. And I would be looking at the sky, music in my head and a smile on my face. All I need is a tune like this, and I'm happy www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNqADIBkovA

I was very pleased to have my recent Cuckoo chosen by BirdGuides as their Photo of the Week. www.birdguides.com/articles/photo-of-the-week/photo-of-th... Amazingly this is the second time this year that one of my photos has achieved this.

Their write-up said "With the apparent passing of 'Colin', the famous Common Cuckoo of Thursley Common, Surrey, that has entertained hundreds of birders and photographers over the past eight years and featured many times in the BirdGuides gallery, there has been a real lack of close-up shots of this species so far this spring. Step forward Tim Melling, who took this superb image of a flying cuckoo in West Yorkshire last week.

Captured in great light, with the bird flying 'towards' the photographer, has made for a truly arresting capture. This 'head-on' angle highlights the remarkable yellow eye of this species, while the slight blur towards the wing-tips adds to the impact of the photo. Many birders will have had close encounters with this species at times, but such sightings are usually very brief as the bird zooms by at speed – Tim has therefore done especially well to nail this encounter." Badbury Clump | Coleshill | Oxfordshire

[EXPLORED] 28th April 2016 I am really pleased to have this image included in EXPLORE (My 13th EXPLORE to-date). Thanks for all the faves and nice comments. I really appreciate the support and welcome any constructive critique, while I continue to grow and develop my skills as a landscape photographer.

A woodland path leads us to a magic place, covered in bluebells...

Did You Know?

There are different species of Bluebells, but the type that grows in Badbury Clump is the native bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta). Here are half a dozen facts about this beautiful flower:

1. Deep violet-blue. A genetic mutation occasionally causes white flowers

2. Flower stem droops or nods distinctly to one side

3. Almost all flowers are on one side of the stem, hanging down to one side

4. Flowers are a narrow, straight-sided bell with parallel sides

5. Petal tips curl back

6. Flowers have a strong, sweet scent

National Trust:

Badbury Hill, managed by The National Trust, is an area of woodland (approx 9 acres) with great views of the Thames flood plain to the north and the historic market town of Faringdon to the east.

The remains of an Iron Age hill fort from about 600BC are close to the car park. The woodland paths and trails are perfect for a family walk and this National Trust property is very popular with dog lovers. During most of April and May each year, thousands of visitors ascend on this small woodland to admire the spectacular display of bluebells amongst the beech trees.

Location:

The woods are located just off the B4019 between Coleshill and Faringdon. There is Free Parking (although apparently charges may start to apply later this year). The car park has some pretty big pot holes, so go careful!

Sat-Nav: Use SN7 7NJ for the car park
