I bought this coreopsis for £2.50p today. It had plenty of stems in the pot that i knew I could divide so now i have 4 all of which should be well established and flower in a couple of months www.flickr.com/photos/31559373@N00/14007698307/

I found this in an old gardening magazine. I was surprised to see how much difference there is in size between the rooting of cuttings in different potting mediums.

Four pieces can be cut from this potato to make four potato plants. The "eye" or buds have sprouted but are still short and compact. Longer sprouts would probably be too brittle and break off. When the buds have sprouted slightly the cutting has a head start over cuttings where the bud are still dormant.

Seed potato pieces ready to plant after drying for 24 hours. The cut surfaces have dried and will be more resistant to decay giving the sprouts time to grow.

You can grow a new celery plant from the base of a harvested stalk. A stalk is made of of ribs (not stalks) The celery leaves flavor soups or stews. Change water daily.

We distributed over 700 houseplants to freshen dorms across the University of Maryland campus. The plants were grown by IAA Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Management lecturer/advisor Ken Ingram, and his INAG 114: Plant Propagation students.

It is worth noting that lobellia bought in bedding trays in plugs are very often easily divide-able.

In the above photo is one of 20 plugs I bought 2 weeks ago for a total of £3.33( 3 trays of 20 for £10)

I'm not sure whether they put multiple seeds into each plug or whether multiple stems are just the natural habit of lobellia but they are very easily pulled apart. I divided the plugs in two but could have got 4 smaller plants from each plug

Here's a photo showing how the divisions look after 2 weeks

At the same tme I bought some nice cosmos in flower in 1 litre pots. Each pot had two cosmos stems so I pulled those apart and got double the plants for my money. After two weeks they're almost indistinguishable from the not divided plants.

It is worthwhile looking carefully at all plants you buy. Many nurseries now put two or three plants in a pot rather than one as they look bigger and more saleable earlier so they're on the nursery a shorter time and save them work.

The best deal I ever had was when I bought 100 pieris "forest flame" in one litre pots from the local plant auctions. They were only 6 inches tall and I intended to pot them on,grow them on for a year and then resell them.

When I came to pot them on I found there was 3 plants in each pot so I had 300 not 100 to sell on.

Many perennials can be simply cut up with a bread knofe to create lots of smaller plants with good root systems. Ground spreaders are often the easiest but the technique works with lots of others such as marguerites/phlox,rudbeckia,solidago,tradescantia Here's the plant divided up and I could easily have doubled the number of plants if i'd needed more. www.flickr.com/photos/31559373@N00/14481431646/

On April 28, 2016, IAA Sustainable Agriculture student Michael Perise led a workshop which demonstrated propagation media and seedling production at the University of Maryland's Terp Farm in Upper Marlboro, MD.

After a successful summer internship under farm manager Guy Kilpatric, Michael is completing his IAA certificate through an apprenticeship on the farm. After graduation, he will be employed part time by Terp Farm's host facility, the Upper Marlboro Research and Education Center, while also starting his own vegetable operation in Southern Maryland.

The event was sponsored by Terp Farm and UMD Dining Services.

The white madrones are unusual. Usually madrones are red. We should collect the seeds of this one out by the road.

Ihad to get a cutting from a Pumpkin Begonia my friend had. He said it would not root, but after about 6 months, the beat up green leaf did root and is now putting out the new growth orange this plant has. It will grow into a big plant. I think it is a hard to find type of Begonia.

Lycopersicon lycopersicum "Sugar sweetie" tomatoes in foreground, 16 days after planting the seeds. These really need to be put into individual pots, (which should be taken care of in the next few days).
