Watching the sunset in Sint Maarten / Saint Martin from Maho Beach's Sunset Bar & Grill. I called the rock "Iguana
rock" but I don't know if it survived the hurricane. The gazebo definitely didn't. The Sonesta Maho Resort where the gazebo is received heavy damage from the huricane. They were in the process of repairing or rebuilding it last I checked. This is a great spot to watch the sunset and the ships heading to sea. Plane watching is a must. #SintMaarten #St.Martin #sunset #MahoBeach #MahoBay #Sonnenuntergang #CoucherDuSoleil #silhouette #orange #Insel #l'île

Plane watching at sunset from the Sunset Bar & Grill on Maho Beach, Sint Maarten. When the ships are in it gets busy from the jetblast crowd. At sunset the ships pull out and it's a quieter world for sunset and plane watching. #SintMaarten #SaintMartin #MahoBeach #PlaneWatching #SXM

These photos are from our second day the Red Flag 23-1 at Nellis Air Force Base in last January 2023. The day started off good with a bunch of Flex West departures. For some reason which we can't figure out, all the departures switched to straight out departures - pretty boring and not good for photography. Later in the afternoon we headed to Cheyenne Avenue for the recovery operations - and we weren't disappointed but it seems like the heavies landed on 21L instead. Oh well!
You may be going on vacation or business trips.
Would you agree with me that the best part of a trip is the journey back home?
It feels so good when we are going back home.
I watched the planes landing on YVR airport last evening.
Have a great long weekend!

I had a few hours to kill at the H Hotel near LAX so I made the most of them. Nice crisp morning for photography - and a nice mix of air traffic. LAX is always so cool to watch planes come and go. I took these photos at the end of March 2023.
I took these photos on our last day in Las Vegas in August 2021. We had a chance to check out Red Flag 21-3 - always a great experience. On this day we had to make the Raceway-Cheyenne shuffle several times - but it was worth it. Not only was the Red Flag activity awesome, we also caught the USAF Thunderbirds returning from an air show. Very impressive! We are already looking forward to more trips to LV and Red Flag.
These photos are from a last minute trip I was able to book to London in May 2022. We were there in April 2022 and it was an adventure, not in a good way. My wife and I were both sick and spent most of the time at the hotel. No fun. She knew I was restless and didn't feel complete so she encouraged me to go back. Sounds good to me! I took these photos shortly after arriving on 5/12/2022. Landings were on 27L so I headed for the Myrtle Field for a few hours and then returned to the Premier Inn T4. Great weather and long daylight made for a great return.
I visited Las Vegas mainly to watch the Red Flag exercise being held in January 2022 at Nellis AFB. We have been to several exercises before and expected a bunch of activity but on the 1st Monday of the 2nd week, not too much was going on. It looked like a normal training day. We could see the B-52s and B-2 on the flight line but they never moved during the day. Also working against us was the very high winds in the area. Very few Flex West departures, most were straight out. Oh well, here's hoping to a better day tomorrow!
I took these photos on 31 January 2022 outside of Nellis AFB, Las Vegas.

Every year the Warhawk Air Museum at Nampa Airport organizes the Warbird Roundup featuring aircraft from the WW II era and some other special visitors. This year's roundup was possibly the best ever - a great assortment of classic warbirds and a F-35A Lighting II from Hill AFB doing a demo flight. Picture perfect weather too.
Advice needed - I need to improve my propeller aircraft photography skill - I'm trying for crisp images and propeller blur but I'm not quite there yet. If you can help please send me a Flickrmail with your recommended settings. Thanks!

My wife and I visited Las Vegas to check out Red Flag 21-3, a big exercise for the USAF, Navy, and some foreign countries. It's a great experience watching so many warplanes coming and going. Las Vegas in August is HOT - as in over 100 degrees so we were sweltering. I still can't seem to get consistent tack sharp photos of the high speed takeoffs so I will keep practicing. Any advice is welcome.
I took these photos outside of Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, in early August 2021.
One of the stops that I was most excited about on our week-long Eastern Caribbean Cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, and St. Kitts on the Celebrity Equinox (February 17-24, 2018), was St. Maarten. The island, that was hit very badly during hurricane season last year, especially Irma (more pictures later) and this was only the second time since that storm that the Equinox has arrived at the port of Philipsburg, St. Maarten. You can see the damage on some of the buildings near the beach. One of the experiences I wanted to capture was plane watching on Maho Beach as planes approached Princess Juliana Airport (SXM). The beach is very narrow after the storm and with extensive damage to the airport, fewer flights are coming in. While we saw many small planes, we did see a JetBlue A320 which was kinda cool. The Delta flight supposedly arriving at 12:05 never made it or was delayed. Wish we saw more - but when bird watching or plane watching - you see what you see. Still the Maho Airplane Experience was a great excursion and I am glad I went.

Volga-Dnepr Ilyushin IL-76 RA-76951 arriving at London Stansted from Krasnoyarsk Russia. The aircraft arrived in beautiful summer sunset during the Covid 19 lockdown and travel restrictions, making it one of only a handful of flights at London's 3rd busiest airport that day.

Forceful Fours Full Wingspan Jetliner Spans Blue Oceans To Span Blue Sky Above Me - IMRANâ„¢
Talk about full circles. Living on Tampa Bay directly across from MacDill Air Force Base I often see four-engined military tankers and transports fly past me. I regularly see more modern twin-engine airliners fly by, turning around my blessed Apollo Beach home to land at Tampa International Airport (TPA) a few miles further north of MacDill from me.
I often see four-engined passenger jumbo jets cross the Atlantic Ocean horizon of my equally blessed home on the Great South Bay on Long Island, New York, as they head to or from Kennedy International Airport (JFK). But that type of plane is what I rarely, if ever, see fly above me here in Florida.
That is why I quickly pulled out my phone to capture this four-engines civilian jetliner as it passed literally vertically above me. I snapped this fully zoomed in iPhone 13 Pro Max image just as the forceful four engines of this Atlas Air jet carried its sleek fuselage and its wide wingspan spanned a part of the sky, maybe after spanning blue oceans on its way here.
I believe Atlas Air is a cargo contractor for Amazon which houses several planes at TPA. They also have a huge distribution center in Ruskin south of me. I wonder if this plane was carrying the circular MagSafe charger I ordered on Amazon for the very iPhone 13 Pro Max I took this picture with. Talk about full circles.

Boeing 737 Max -9 N7379E made a very welcome visit to London Stansted Airport. It arrived on June 12th 2017 after dark and headed straight for the Ryanair hangar. Two days later on the 14th June, the aircraft departed for Paris. Believed to be the first visit of the type to London.

We were waiting at the Alaska gate for our flight home. Since it was running late I found a good viewing point and was lucky to get something other than United flights. I took these photos at the end of October 2021.
On the last few days of our 2021 trip to Iceland we had to deal with heavy rain and very strong winds. We booked a hotel that was in an old dorm at the ex-USAF base which was almost on the flight line. What a pleasant surprise! The wife was happy to stay warm and dry in the room so she let me go watch planes.
KEF is an interesting airport. Icelandair is the main carrier and they have a large wave of flights from the USA landing around 6 am and leaving for Europe around 8 am. They start coming back around 3-4 pm. Other than that the airport is very quiet. There were a few European airliners and biz jets coming in. What I like best was the unexpected arrivals - planes that showed up on Flight Radar 24 only when they were over Iceland inbound to KEF. There was also a number of US military flights coming in.
The weather was really bad for a bit - I had to lay across the back seat of the rental car with the window down to avoid the horizontal rain. The car was shaking so badly I thought it would turned over. What an adventure! On our flight home we had access to the Icelandair lounge (it's very nice) and had a good view of the airport. I would definitely love to spend more time there!
I took these photos in late September 2021.
During our last visit to Seattle we stayed in the Everett area, not too far from Paine Field. Paine Field is site of the massive Boeing complex that assembles the larger jets - 747, 767, 777, and 787. You can see a large group of jets being readied for test flights and delivery, unfortunately it's hit and miss ever seeing any activity.
When we were there, WA State was covered in a smokey haze from wildfires in British Columbia. Blah.
I took these photos in August 2017.
I stopped at the Hibiscus parking garage at FLL to spend a few hours plane watching. Beautiful day outside and air traffic is picking up finally. Unfortunately I didn't pay enough attention to my camera settings and some of the photos are not tack sharp - I hate that. FLL is very spotter friendly and I see a return trip in my future!
I took these photos in mid-December 2021.
We love heading to Nellis Air Force Base 1-2 times a year to catch the Red Flag Exercise. There is usually a really good mix of US and international forces. This year there were RAF Typhoons and a tanker. I understand the Australians headed for it but didn't make it by the time we were there. We lucked out in that many of the takeoffs involved Flex West departures which put the fighters banking right over the Speedway. We had really good weather (except for the wind) and really enjoyed this trip. We were there for 2.5 days in late January 2023.
LAX is a plane watching paradise - it's always busy and there is a great mix of domestic and international airlines. I try to stay near there a few times a year. On this trip I had just finished attending the WonderCon in Anaheim so I stayed a day at the H Hotel, famous for their 12th floor terrace. This terrace provides good views of both the 24 and 25 runways but lighting and obstructions are a problem - but it's still fun! I took these photos at the end of March 2023.
Whenever we visit family in San Diego we try to spend some time at the dog park on the beach near NAS North Island. Great area to relax. Plane watching at the airfield is hit and miss - and that last few trips have been misses. We were there a few hours on a lovely afternoon in early March 2023 and things were pretty dead. Oh well, better luck next time.
This WW II vintage aircraft, a B-17 belonging to the Commemorative Air Force, makes an annual visit to the War Hawk Museum. It's always a joy to see her but dang, can we get some clear weather? We are suffering from eye, nose, and throat irritating wildfire smoke. When she was in the air I could hear her long before anyone could see her. Fortunately, checking out my wife is always good for my sore eyes!

My London trip was coming to an end so I wanted to spend some time at the Myrtle Avenue field. Forecast was for excellent weather. Sunrise was shortly after 5 a.m. so I got an early start and got to the field around 5:15 - and people were there already! The bad thing was the sun rose almost directly behind the landing aircraft. We went en masse to Hatton Cross Underground Station and found some better angles. After a bit the sun got higher and was less harsh so we went back to the field. Beautiful day just sitting there watching life go by - until I fell asleep in my chair. I decided to return to my room for a proper nap. I regret that now since a bunch of cool planes landed and I would rather have shot them outdoors. Hopefully there will be a next time soon.
I took these photos in mid-May 2022.
These photos are from our third day of plane spotting at the 23-1 Red Flag Exercise at Nellis Air Fore Base. After a lovely morning at Red Rock Canyon we got to Nellis around 1330, just as the B-52 was taxiing for take off. Excellent timing. Good weather, still windy, and most planes were doing the Flex West departure - very nice. About an hour after the wave of takeoffs subsided, we went to Cheyenne Avenue to catch the afternoon recoveries. This was one of our best days there ever. Seemed like nonstop action for over an hour. The lighting conditions were awesome - good late afternoon sun right before sunset - especially when the AWACS finished the days activities. Wow!
I took these photos from one of the parking garages at LAS. I checked in early and had some time to kill so I wandered up to this spotting spot - it was pretty nice - and cold. It was about 35 degrees with a nasty wind blowing. I lasted about an hour before heading back inside. I would definitely come back here again - when it is warmer!
