One of the largest of London's private squares, designed and laid out by John Nash, dominated by plane trees said to have been planted in 1817 to commemorate the allied victory at Waterloo two years earlier. Other trees of note include a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and weeping silver lime (Tilia tomentosa 'Petiolaris')

An original and unique feature of the garden is the Nursemaids' Tunnel, an early pedestrian underpass connecting the Square to Park Crescent. The tunnel passes under the busy Marylebone Road, allowing families to promenade safely through both gardens without worrying about the noisy public throng passing overhead.

The combination of Park Square and Crescent was designed to form a transitional entrance feature to Regent’s Park, leading the visitor from the formal Nash streetscape of Portland Place in the south, to the green and picturesque landscape in the north. It was described as a 'sort of vestibule' to the new royal park. New gates and railings have been installed to original designs.

The gardens retain most of their original Nash layout and have been managed continuously from their inception by an organisation specifically set up in 1824 to carry out this task, the Crown Estate Paving Commission.

This parasite climbing ivy, if not uprooted will end up killing these mature and sturdy London plane trees: it is amazing that the residents seem to be completely oblivious about such unfortunate prospect

genus:

Platanus x acerifolia

----------------------------------------

eveloped before 1700, probably through a cross between our native Sycamore and the Oriental Planetree. The specific scientific name, acerifolia, refers to the maple-like appearance of the leaves. Brown, green and gray patches mark the smooth bark of this tree. Also, the bark peels away in large flakes. This tree grows well in moist soils of humid temperate regions. Landscapers have planted it widely throughout the United States including Ohio. Used widely as an ornamental, many consider this to be perhaps the best tree in the United States for lining streets. The London Planetree also is suitable for being pruned to form hedges, screens and arbors. On the grounds of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna workers have developed and maintained a living tree hedge from the London Planetree.

Got a nice view of a good bit of the Vallum at Planetrees. The Vallum was the earthwork built south of the line of Hadrian's Wall, forming a kind of militarised zone between itself and the wall.

This lonely plane tree leaf made me think of "The Last Leaf", the short story by O. Henry. That leaf, from memory, was ivy.

London planetree (Platanus x acerifolia) in Allan Gardens, Toronto. This beautiful tree has bark that peels back creating a green/grey/beige camouflage pattern on the lower trunk and leaving the upper trunk and branches stark white. At night, it almost seems to glow. On a sunny day, it's bright against the blue sky. On a grey day, it blends with the clouds.

Queens Park is a small formal park near the center of town, surrounded on all sides by mature plane trees.

The hotel we stayed at, Room2 Hotel, is located right across the street. The park is a lovely respite from the hustle and bustle.

Caledonia waterfalls, is one of the highest water falls in Cyprus. It is located on Platres village in Troodos and the water fells from a height of 12 meters. It can be reached via a walking path.

Caledonia waterfall is surrounded by forest in a very beautiful area with breathtaking views. The trail is 3km long and can last up to 2 hours. It can also be divided into two parts, the first one which is the higher one that leads to the waterfalls and the second one which leads from the waterfall to Platres.

A walk to Stamford Hill and back. The breezy day was perfect for walking.

Near the top of the hill the London Plane trees line the road. They used to be one of the only tree species that would grow, due to the smog that clogged the bark of most trees. These shed their bark so managed well. Now mature they are spectacular trees.
