2018-Pirelli World Challenge at VIR

Leading early and looking strong but fell a little short. Couldn't miss this car on the track.

My second trip to VIR. Wanted to improve on some shots from last year and find new angles. Happy to say that I had only 1 fence in my way.

This was also the first time really focusing on using the 400mm for an event since retiring the 100-400. Really didn't miss it or the convenience of a zoom. I am pretty happy with how this 25 year old lens performs.

What a bugger it is trying to catch them (from spectator views) as they just 'pop-up' over the Uphill. Gonna need a bigger step stool.

Another 70-200mm & 2x TC test...

This time with some panning and a chance to see exactly how fast the AF will lock-on with a 2x TC attached.

I decided to test something out here. I've been spending quite a bit of time learning, testing, trial and error... with my 400 f5.6. I decided to try my canon 70-200mm f/2.8l is ii usm which is very sharp, with my 2x teleconverter and see what it yielded at 400mm @ 5.6

To my surprise, it actually had a better DOF and was nicely sharp and contrasty. I'm not sure how viable this combo would be in use all day, especially since I typically need longer lengths, but it was interesting to see how the quality was. I did not see any real loss in quality.

I've had my eye on the 300mm f2.8 for a while. Physically, I cannot do the 400 f2.8 for events. The 300 appeals because I can get 300, 420 and 600 with my teleconverters and the quality of the 300 is better than the 70-200... which is already good. Decisions-decisions...

Not much to crop here... still 5629 pixels wide.

Had to do a moderately healthy crop but it's still 4221 pixels wide and I think the quality held-up pretty well. Might try another one and crop closer to see what detail is available.

Radicals on track first thing in the morning. Decided to start the day in a different area to see what I could get with the early morning lighting. Got some decisions to make for when I go back later this summer.

From inside West Bend. 400mm is a little too much lens from the fence so I took quite a few steps back,pre-focused and stood on my step stool so I could track it emerging from behind the tree.

Trying to take advantage of the morning light. The fencing kind-of hindered things here a little bit.

Audi R8

2018-Pirelli World Challenge at VIR

What can I say, there were quite a few R8's here and their livery designs were really eye-catching. Move 25 steps to right, stand on my little step stool and get a nice view of the cars in the center of Oak Tree. Loved the morning sun light here. Great reward for getting to the track shortly after 7am.

On the back straight at Watkins Glen. Panning the GT World Challenge cars as they are hard on the throttle down the straight. A tight crop as I didn't leave some space at the front, but liking the color including the September foliage and sky line.

Start of the RCNA (Radical Cars North America) coming down the front stretch into turn 1 at Watkins Glen International and of course, shot through a fence :-/

This was an experimental outing to test my old 400 on my 5D and 7D. I did not have a chance to try this set-up here at The Glen as my 300 has become my primary.

I was not terribly happy with the way the 7D performed and has disappointed me for the last time. I just do not like the way it renders and it's hit-or-miss AF system... regardless of the quality of glass on the end.

West Virginia University livery on the bimmer. Morning practice at the exit of Oak Tree. Sun and fencing made it tricky. I've since learned to better manage this area of the track.

I personally think the front 3/4 view of this car is it's best angle. Very aggressive stance.

Trying my hand at dragging the shutter speed a little more for panning. Probably not the best area of the track to try this as it a very active section (snake section) as they’re zigging and zagging and banging-over the curbs but figured, why not give it a go.
