Dwarf Eastern white pine with unique twisted needles. Slow grower. Sister seedling to ‘Tiny Kurls’. It grows at a slower rate than its sister, 1""-2"" per year. Has the same twisted foliage. A dwarf, oval globe. Planted in 2009. One of my favorites."

Common name: Japanese Black Pine

Global warming caused these alpine areas to become warmer, allowing for younger trees to establish. These smaller samplings are only about 50 years old whereas the acient ones are several thousand years old.

 

These trees are probably 3000-4000 years old. It is hard for a mere human to grasp that scale standing next to these ancient organisms.

The five needles per fascicle and the large woody cones that persist intact after falling to the ground are characteristic of this pine species. This site lies along the road below the summit of Big Southern Butte, Butte County, Idaho.

This photo was taken in my moms beautiful garden.

Mount Tomah, New South Wales - in our garden. Now about 20 m / 65 ft tall, this pine survived a very fierce bushfire in 1979.
