Macro Monday
Theme: Pink
Size: Less than 3x3 inches
The subject is a pink plastic cutlery strainer from Ikea with small elliptical holes for water drainage in its base.
The bigger diameter of the hole is 8mm.
I stuck a pinkish pin head into the drainage hole. If you look carefully you could see the pin shadow.
You can also see all the scarring marks on the plastic.
I deliver the bubbles into the hole by blowing with a straw.
Only one light source of natural light at 12 o'clock.
I have turned the image upside down for better effect.
Many thanks for your visit, comments and faves...it is always appreciated..

I knew early on what would be my subject for the "Pins" theme: pins on an old motherboard. For my "Modern Times" style image for the MM theme "cogwheel" back in 2018 (please see the second comment) I'd wanted a circuit board as background, but didn't have one at hand. So I went to a very small computer shop around the corner and asked if they had an old, useless circuit board lying around – they had, and I got it for free. To carry it home, however, was a spiky affair. I'd thought that I'd simply put the mainboard under my arm, but I hadn't been aware that there are so many tiny, super spiky-prickly-sharp pins on a mainboard ;) So in the end I held it – in turns – at the sides (gingerly) or at the ports that would have been at the back of the computer chassis. A lasting memory, as it seems ;)
I've photographed the undersides of a row of connector pins that are plugged onto the edge of the mainboard. Each of them is 1 mm / 0,03 inches long. I've used both extension tubes (10mm/16mm) and the Raynox DCR-250 close-up lens to get as close to the pins as possible. For the yellow/golden light I've used a yellow, semi-translucent cap of a soap bottle that fits so nicely onto the LED lamp's head. I was surprised that the pins looked so soft(-ish), and with the smooth, minimalist bokeh and the background colour (apparently the living room wall, because I hadn't put anything behind the mainboard) the final result reminded me of a corps de ballet or a chorus line. Or of chess pawns, but I prefer the aforementioned idea that these are dancers on an opera stage.
HMM, Everyone! Stay safe and healthy, and have a pleasant week ahead :)
I went up on the hill again last night to shoot of one of my favorite fences, but it wasn't as easy as it appears. Parking is tough to come by so I found a restricted spot next to this beauty, quickly grabbed my camera, ran up the sidewalk and snapped a few shots (without checking my settings-thus a blown out sky covered in texture!) and was happy to see these two guys coming down the hill. By now you all know I'm a bokeh freak so I was thrilled to see what my 50 did to their heads...crazy!! LOL!!

Pieces of bread I left in a sealed polythene bag for a few days. The trapped moisture and lack of air circulation created an ideal environment for mold spores to thrive.
This mold is rhizopus stolonifer. It is also known as pinhead mold. It is one of the most common types of mold and is a fast growing fungus that appears in white, then gray, and eventually black as it matures and releases spores.
HMM!

A simple contribution for this theme; a single pin (singles were seen in the sample gallery) lying flat on a white piece of card in the shadow of a plastic "crystal" bottle stopper purchased from a charity shop for this very purpose. This is a crop of about a quarter of the frame.
Taken handheld(!) in bright sunshine with the Helios 44M on about 5cm of extension tubes at f/8. In post -processing, I've added a blue colour to the shadow with some complementary orange to the pinhead. I've then brightened the central (horizontal) band of the image to keep the eye on the pinhead and not drift upwards.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments and favs. All are greatly appreciated. HLCoF
There was so much neat nature stuff to see today that I had to add this look at a viceroy egg. I was hiking at Chipera Prairie this evening and saw a viceroy butterfly land on the end of this meadow willow leaf. A couple seconds later she repeated the process on a second leaf before flying away. Knowing willow leaves are a favorite food for viceroy caterpillars, I suspected she may have been laying eggs and lo and behold here is what I found. This viceroy egg is no larger than a pinhead but if you look up close its shell is covered with elaborate decorations.

Another of my images for Macro Monday - it was hard to decide which one to put forward... This is taken from one of those Pin Sculpture boards - captured again on the windowsill yesterday morning with the early morning sunlight - it is sometimes fun to play :)
Over the past weeks, I've been observing Argiope keyserlingi life cycle at the one location. I went to take notes/images on most days.
The adult pair were photographed December 10, 2021 and the spiderlings (these being just some of the much larger grouping) January 25, 2022. Seen in the middle is the egg sac. The male is just 4 mm body length - marked sexual dimorphism can be seen, the female being much bigger. The spiderlings not much bigger than a pinhead.
Commonly called St Andrew's Cross spider.

I found these very cute, and very tiny, fungus cups on a rotting piece of wood in my garden. To my eye, they were just like tiny white pinheads; it's only when you magnify them, with my MP-E 65mm lens here, you see the intricate detail, and also the water droplets on them.
I'm wasn't sure what these were, and thought they might be an earlier stage of Merismodes fasciculata, which I uploaded an image of earlier this year: www.flickr.com/photos/pogspix/15553919193. But, Steve Balcombe has suggested Lachnum species, which looks correct (thank you).
Happy to be corrected if not.
There's also a photobomber in the bottom left, some sort of fly larva, I would guess.
I took this image with my MP-E 65mm at about 3x magnification.
The weather last night was balmy, a perfect night to brave the throngs at popular English Bay in Vancouver. We wandered and gaped at the scantily dressed beachgoers, like a couple of yokels from Hicksville, it was a lot of fun.

Having a little mouch round Blickling hall today whilst on explore in norfolk with mrs pinhead. Those dam heaters tarnished my aged scene tho! After yesterdays minimalist i thought it only fair to even things out with a maximumist shot :)
On an early start tomorrow so will do a big catch up tomorrow night with all your amazing pieces of work. :)

Carnival candy slime mold or cotton candy slime mold (Arcyria denudata) is a worldwide myxomycete species. What are myxomycetes (slime molds) anyway? Slime mold is an informal name given to several kinds of unrelated eukaryotic (posessing a nucleus) organisms that can live freely as single cells, but can also aggregate together to form multicellular reproductive structures. The fruiting bodies we see in the picture are reproductive structures that form spores. They open and expand to release spores as they mature, resulting in a fluffy cotton candy appearance as in the photo. "Myxos" are all around us and a beautiful place to start looking for them are moist rotting logs in a forest. They love the same conditions as fungi but for myxos you have to train your eyes to see patches of white or coloured pinheads on moist rotting wood or leaves. Like a lot of fungi they help to recycle organic material. I am excited about finally finding and photographing some of these beauties.
Swallowtails are found in only one area of the UK, so seeing one or two flying around up at Allmendhubel was a real treat. But talk about elusive: every time I got near enough to be sure that it was bigger than a pinhead in the frame, off it would go at great speed! This was the best I could manage after about 15 mins trying (and lots of deleted images!) - pity that it's the nearer dandelions which are in the best focus!
An ultra close up of a single flower. This plant grows in dense, matted cushions, and may be found from Alaska east to Greenland, south through BC and Washington to northern Oregon, and through the Rockies. Widespread, successful, and a nightmare to photograph. The flowers are sooo tiny! Try to show the entire plant and the flowers look like pinheads, although in reality they are about 1 cm in diameter (that's a guess, based on memory).
I do have shots of the clustered flowers in landscape shots (you know, foreground interest), but this time in Waterton may have been my first attempt to photograph an individual flower. It was really pretty and looked far more delicate and dainty than expected. The plant, of course, is hardy, robust, and superbly adapted to rocky terrain, short summers, and long winters.
I don't normally use f/36, because there is a dropoff in sharpness, but in this case depth of field was so shallow at minimum focus that I took a chance. I kept the flower dead centre to minimize distortion, chromatic aberration, and similar problems, and got a surprisingly good result. With my shutter down to 1/30 and an intermittent, slight breeze, I shot dozens of backup frames to increase my chances of getting one that wasn't blurred from subject movement. Even the slightest tremble will show when you focus this close. The camera was on a tripod; there was no other way to do it. That was fine, because I worked all day from the tripod, except for some hand held wildlife shots. I also locked the mirror up - a problem many shooters no longer have - and waited a couple seconds for any vibrations to die down before exposing each frame. So it actually took some time and effort to get this shot.
