At the entrance to the Pindaya Caves, the tale of the prince who killed the spider and saved the princess. In this case, the spider is eating katie while I stand and watch.

Peanut almost made human.

The original commemorative statue of Pinda Wullem was created by the artist Hay Mansvelders and was cast in bronze. It stood in the Jodenstraat for many years as a tribute to the city’s first Chinese resident. However, in 2016, the bronze statue was stolen - a common fate for metal public art, as thieves often melt them down for the scrap value of the bronze. This loss left a void in the street’s historical landscape for several years.

To ensure the character’s permanent return to the city, a new version was commissioned from the artist Hans Reijnders and unveiled in 2021. Reijnders deliberately chose to work with hard stone (Petit Granit) specifically to prevent a repeat of the 2016 theft; because the material has no resale value as scrap, it is far less likely to be targeted. While the choice was practical, the stone also gives the sculpture a grounded, sturdy presence that reflects Wullem's enduring legacy in Venlo's local folklore.

The man himself, Tsen Koa Pai, remains one of Venlo’s most iconic figures. Arriving in 1937, he was a fixture of the city's nightlife, carrying a wooden tray and selling roasted peanuts with his signature call of "Pienda, pienda, lekka lekka!" Beyond the peanuts, he was a shrewd businessman who helped the local youth by discreetly selling condoms hidden beneath the sweets in his tray. This sculpture, standing near the historic Romerhuis, ensures that his colorful contribution to the city's social fabric is never forgotten.
