Volunteer pilots fly historic Spitfire planes at airshows to showcase their beauty and power to the public. These skilled pilots generously donate their time and expertise to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the pilots who flew Spitfires during World War II. Their demonstrations of aerial acrobatics and precise flying maneuvers leave spectators in awe and admiration.

This model shows some of the basic flight wear worn by fighter pilots of World War II. The leather helmet, goggles, and life-preserver were common in all theaters with some adaptations and additions based on climate.
The vast distances here turn the trusty 300mm into a handy landscape lens! Pilot Peak is a good 30 miles from my vantage point on the Blue Lake Trail.

It’s now a state park.
It’s become famous due to the Andy Griffith Show. It’s referred to on the show as a town called “Mount Pilot”. Andy’s hometown, Mt. Airy, is nearby. The name “Mayberry” sounds a lot like that.
Parts of downtown Mt. Airy have taken on the persona of the fictional Mayberry, with businesses named the same as the show. (Ie: Snappy Lunch, Floyd’s Barber Shop and others). The series was never filmed there.
Pilots with the Estonian Air Force, who have been assigned to the Maryland National Guard for the past year, deployed from The Maryland National Guard Army Aviation Support Facility in Edgewood, Md., Aug. 24. Capt. Rene Kallis and Capt. Martin Noorsalu will be deployed with C Company, 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Regiment in Afghanistan.
The Maryland National Guard has a relationship with Estonia through the National Guard's State Partnership Program, which brings together U.S. states and territories with partner nations to enhance international security and promote understanding, trust and stability.
I imagine the men arrive for the weekend directly from work. They jumped into convertibles or even flew their own Cessna to a nearby landing strip. As an elite corps, the real test pilots were notoriously lax in their military dress and known for personal style. Their status set them above the rules. I would like our men to wear brown leather jackets, but I've chosen a more contemporary, sleek style to create an iconic, timeless look. They wear khaki trousers and individualized shirts and shoes, the much admired Aviator glasses and for some, perhaps goggles if they just flew in.

From our day trip on the Kootenay Lake ferry.
Constructed in 1904 and activated in 1905, the Pilot Bay Lighthouse is valued as a rare and well-preserved heritage site on the east shore of Kootenay Lake. The lighthouse is significant for its historical association with the sternwheeler era on the lake which began in the late 1880s and lasted until the 1950s, and is a symbol of early navigation when silver ore, supplies and people were transported between mining communities by water. Now the last remaining inland lighthouse in British Columbia, the lighthouse was built when new settlement and mining and smelting activity were increasing the sternwheeler traffic on Kootenay Lake, connecting with the railways to create a regional transportation network. Increased marine traffic meant new requirements for navigational aids, particularly one which would service the area at the junction of the south, north and west arms of Kootenay Lake. The lighthouse is valued for its longevity and the adaptations to new technology that allowed it to continue to function until 1993.
