The SBD Dauntless had a two-man crew seated back-to-back; a pilot and a rear-facing gunner. Though reatively slow, the SBD-3 featured armor plating and bullet-proof glass to protect the aircrew and self-sealing gas tanks. The SBD proved to be a steady performer even when called upon to battle the fabled Japanese fighters. With two fixed forward firing machine guns and twin trainable rear guns, the SBD Dauntless could more than handle its own against the lightly armored Japanese fighters. Though agile and mounting powerful weaponry, Japanese fighters were relatively lightly armored (if at all) and offered up a fair fight to the equally-powerful SBD series. The Dauntless would earn itself many an air kill before the end of the war thanks to the know-how and bravery of her crews and deficiencies in the design of her adversary aircraft.
The historic significance of the SBD Dauntless and the aircrews that flew them into battle at Midway is best expressed by a quote from historian George Walsh: "The story of how a small force of US Navy carrier based dive-bombers changed the course of the war for the United States and its Allies, is one of the most dramatic exploits ever achieved by a small group of men in any war. It was a victory where courage and scarifice at the lowest levels of command overcame errors made at staff level. Above all, it was the dive-bomber that delivered a visually thrilling, high-accuracy blow against the Japanese aircraft carriers that, in the space of five short minutes saved a battle that threatened disaster and changed the course of history."

The viewport on top is less for piloting than for general scouting of the ship's surroundings. The ship uses an extensive camera-and-VR system to relay object position to the user.
"Yeah, the system has failed every once in a while," Jeffrey Sparrick says, "So when that happens, you stand and pilot through the viewport. But even with the system failures, I must admit that the VR system has made me a better pilot. The VR helmet helps me to keep track of not only all of Ignorance's current specs, but it helps me to make sense of all the damn buttons on the control module."

MARKAB Pilot Vessel IMO:7605691, MMSI:244949000. Build year: 1978 by Vuijk & Zonens, Capelle Aan Den Ijssel, Netherlands. Gross tonnes 871.
I have seen this vessel out in a force 8 in the North Sea coordinating a rescue of injured crew from a big container ship and she was impressive to watch in such a heavy sea. I would like to hear from anyone who has crewed her about her sea keeping abilities.
