I saw this exotic bird at Chester Zoo.. They are found in New Guinea

They forage on the forest floor eating fallen fruit, seeds and snails. The males and females are almost identical, but during courtship the male will coo and bow for the female. Both parents incubate one egg for 28 to 30 days and the chick takes another 30 days to fledge. The life span can be over 20 years.....

Mourning Dove.

A 12 inch long bird with a soft, sandy buff color. They have a long pointed tail bordered with white and withblack spots on the wings.

It inhabits open fields, parks, and lawns with many trees and shrubs.

They range throughout the United States and Canada and winters in the northern United States.

Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan.

Not the most popular of birds but the colours are pretty against the snow.

For today's theme, the White-headed Pigeon (Columba leucomela), a large pigeon native to the east coast of Australia. They thrive in tropical regions, subtropical rainforests, scrub, watercourses, street trees and in my garden.

Rock Pigeon, Columba livia, Merpati

Original wild rock pigeons are pale grey with two black bars on each wing, while domestic and feral pigeons as in this image, are very variable in colour and pattern. There are few visible differences between males and females. Many domestic birds have escaped or been released over the years, and have given rise to the feral pigeon. These show a variety of plumages, although some have the blue barred pattern as does the pure rock pigeon. Habitats include various open and semi-open environments. Cliffs and rock ledges are used for roosting and breeding in the wild. In the cities, rooftops is favourite breeding grounds. Originally found wild in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, feral pigeons have become established in cities around the world. The species is abundant, with an estimated population of millions across the continents. Feral pigeons are found in large numbers in cities and towns all over the world.

Another Pigeon seen on Richmond Railway Station west of Sydney

Richmond was settled by the British people here in 1789.

It is on the shores of the Hawkesbury River.

An outer western suburb of Sydney.

The domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is a pigeon subspecies that was derived from the rock dove (also called the rock pigeon). The rock pigeon is the world's oldest domesticated bird. Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets mention the domestication of pigeons more than 5,000 years ago, as do Egyptian hieroglyphics. Research suggests that domestication of pigeons occurred as early as 10,000 years ago.

Pigeons have made contributions of considerable importance to humanity, especially in times of war. In war the homing ability of pigeons has been put to use by making them messengers. So-called war pigeons have carried many vital messages and some have been decorated for their services. Medals such as the Croix de Guerre, awarded to Cher Ami, and the Dickin Medal awarded to the pigeons G.I. Joe and Paddy, amongst 32 others, have been awarded to pigeons for their services in saving human lives.

Pigeons get a bad press. They have beautiful markings and the Speckled Pigeon is not exception. Taken at the wonderful Treetops Hotel in the Aberdares region of Kenya

Wood pigeon (Paloma torcaz)

Asturias, Spain

Wood pigeons are not only beautiful, but also truly intelligent animals. They can become very tame and trusting.

If you take the time, you'll quickly discover that wood pigeons, in particular, understand us and can make themselves known and communicate in a way that is more common with dogs and cats.

If you're lucky enough to hand-raise one, you'll gain a flying friend for life.
