capturing a butterfly

with a camera

makes a great metaphor

for freezing fleeting bursts

of magical moments

each flitter is a unique gesture

which passes in an instant

each flutter is a singular motion

which never comes back

Looking through my viewfinder while trying to capture this butterfly reminded me how important it is to live in the moment. It doesn’t matter how simple or insignificant that moment might seem to be. I know that within it lie incredible wonders, but which only my heart can see.

Wikipedia says, "Eye contact is an event when two people look at each other's eyes at the same time. It is a form of nonverbal communication known as oculesics and has a large influence on social behavior. Frequency and interpretation of eye contact vary between cultures."

Joan Baez, on the other hand, crooned: ~

As I remember your eyes

Were bluer than robin's eggs

My poetry was lousy you said

Where are you calling from?

A booth in the midwest

Ten years ago

I bought you some cufflinks

You brought me something

We both know what memories can bring

They bring diamonds and rust.

I recently visited Morro Bay , specifically Morro strait a section of beach that words can barely descibe. Kids, dogs, and coulples just walking along this beach cannot help but be awestruck by the immense size of the rock and the atmosphere it seems to generate. The waves lap along the shore and the sun seems to just hover and play with the outline of the rock. Here is the series of shot I took this day as the sun slowly went down.

a must see for anyone visiting pismo beach or highway 1 on the California coastline. PS the riders of these horses asked me to post this as they said "they have no shots of them riding on this beach" I hope this finds you well.

Excerpt from www.lecinqueterre.org/eng/arte/vernaantiochia.php:

Legend has it that in ancient times, a small wooden box was found along the coast of Vernazza, containing the bones of a finger of Santa Margherita's hand. After shouting the miracle, the inhabitants decided to build a church in honor of the Saint in the district called Isolotto. A strong storm, however, dispersed the relic and it appeared only some time later, exactly where it was first found. The Vernazzesi then built the church there, overlooking the sea, where it is today.

More prosaically, the church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia was built in the 13th century in the Gothic-Ligurian style by the Antelami Masters on a pre-existing Romanesque building. Mentioned for the first time in 1318, it stands on a rock overlooking the sea. The octagonal tower, 40 meters high, is crowned by small arches and ends with an ogival dome. Between 1500 and 1600 the church was enlarged, extending the hall by two bells per nave, to the detriment of the original medieval façade which was destroyed. In 1750, new works on the church led to the covering of the Romanesque interior with Baroque style coverings, also replacing the wooden roof with vaults and raising the bell tower. In more recent times, in the years 1964-1970, the church was partially restored with the original internal structure and recovering the exposed wooden roof.

The church has two entrances: the main one is more hidden and less easy to reach, and a more comfortable one, in one of the apses overlooking the tree-lined square in front of the marina, opened during the 19th century. The interior with three naves is raised above the level of the square. It houses two 17th century canvases, the Baroque high altar from 1750, an 18th century processional chest and a wooden crucifix attributed to Anton Maria Maragliano.

Quell'odore è dato dai composti contenenti cianuro.

Poema El pozo

de Pablo Neruda

A veces te hundes, caes

en tu agujero de silencio,

en tu abismo de cólera orgullosa,

y apenas puedes

volver, aún con jirones

de lo que hallaste

en la profundidad de tu existencia.

Amor mío, qué encuentras

en tu pozo cerrado?

Algas, ciénagas, rocas?

Qué ves con ojos ciegos,

rencorosa y herida?

Mi vida, no hallarás

No me temas, no caigas

Ella volverá a herirme

Sorry for a crappy face shot. I was really busy today and by the time I was 1/3 done with my work it was nightime...

I'm pretty much started to hate what I'm doing, I'm irritable, I'm getting catty, I'm getting overly defensive. I sleep everywhere I go (I swear, even when I'm eating I can fall asleep)

I feel that ever since I entered this school I've changed for the worse. It makes you a more fucked up person. You got through so much shit, stress and drama that sometimes you change into the person you hate without really realizing it. ,

I used to love getting critique, my teachers used to say that they never met a student more willing to listen to criticism. But after I entered design school it started to irritate me. Well, depending on how the critique was phrased.

Sometimes critique sounds very rude and tactless. I've gone through harsh and at times, unreasonable critiques from lecturers.

Sometimes what they're saying is just "That's ugly, please re-do it." but they have to put you through at least 5 minutes of how ugly they think it is, and in front of the whole class. They don't even tell you how you can work on it to improve.

I'm so sick of this place, we work nearly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it changes you, it warps you into someone you don't want to be, now I finally understand why so many of my schoolmates quit.

1. You change (for the worse). 2. You get constantly backstabbed and bitched about. 3. You face unreasonable lecturers. 4. Your skin turns bad, you develop eye bags, you feel tired all the time 5. You don't get enough time to sleep, rest etc.

And yet all your hardwork doesn't ensure that you'll get a good grade because after all that hard work you can be just put down in front of the class.

3 more days of torture. Then freedom for a short while.

I can't wait.

Monday:

My monday has been very mundane. Somehow I managed to go to bed at 5am and wake up once at 8 to wake my dad and make his tea, and then twice more for Dash to go out but really I didn't stay awake until after 1pm...I never do that! But oh it felt sooo nice...I needed that extra sleep badly.

I also had a day free of writers block! Go me *snoopy dance*

I also somehow managed to lose my neck in my photo...I know, I'm so talented pfft =^_^=

The Rock Run Mill was built in 1794 by John Stump, a prominent businessman, on land originally known as "Land of Promise". The mill was in continuous use until 1954. It is one of the oldest mills still standing in Harford County.

The building was restored by the State of maryland in 1965. The huge water wheel, which drives the French-made mill stones, is an exact replica of the original. The water wheel turns from the weight of the water filling the buckets. Although it weighs twelve tons, the wheel is so finely balanced that less than two pouds of force will turn it.

During its operation the mill served as a center of activity for the community. Money was seldom exchanged between the local farmers, who brought their grain to be ground into meal, and the miller. Instead, the miller took a percentage of the processed grain, known as his "pottle".

Fatty marrow on char grilled toast (more delicious St. John bread) that bring out the smoky flavours from of the char. The marrow was served unsalted and tasted only oily, rich, but ironically very clean. I enjoyed the lightly dressed parsley salad, which was a lovely blend of crisp greens, kicked up with lightly salted fresh capers and peppery red onions. The salad was the cleansing component on this otherwise artery clogging plate, balancing out the strong flavours of the grilled toasts and cutting the richness of the fatty marrow.

Ex #6 Again not the shot I set out to get, tide was too high when I got here, bla bla bla. I had been on the beach for an hour and a half without one successful shot before I took shelter behind the old harbour wall to get this. The exposure is a bit too long as I lost a lot of detail in the clouds, but it was the only shot I got, i live and learn.

Introduction

This is a relatively-common butterfly that is unmistakable when seen at rest - the rings on the hindwings giving this butterfly its common name. The uppersides are a uniform chocolate brown that distinguish this butterfly from the closely-related Meadow Brown. Despite this uniformity, a newly-emerged adult is a surprisingly beautiful insect, the velvety wings providing a striking contrast with the delicate white fringes found on the wing edges. The dark colouring also allows this butterfly to quickly warm up - this butterfly being one of the few that flies on overcast days.

Variation in this butterfly is primarily focused on the rings on the hindwings, the lanceolata aberration being particularly striking, where the rings are elongated to form teardrops. Other aberrations occur where the rings are greatly reduced or completely absent. Huggins (1959) also describes a form in Kerry, Ireland, that is of normal size until 600 feet, when it starts to be replaced by a dwarf form that, at 1,000 feet, takes over completely.

This butterfly can be found throughout most of the British Isles, south of a line between the South Ebudes in the west and Banffshire in the east. It is also absent from the western parts of northern England, north-west of the Midlands, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. This butterfly forms discrete colonies where numbers vary from a few dozen to several thousand.

Aphantopus hyperantus

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1758)

Conservation Status

This is one of the few species that is doing well, with evidence of increases in both distribution and population. It is not, therefore, a priority species for conservation efforts.

Habitat

A variety of habitats is used, although sites characterised as being sheltered and damp are preferred, such as woodland clearings, woodland edges and rides, meadows, hedgerows, road verges and country lanes, where the full heat from the summer sun can be avoided and where the foodplant is lush. The butterfly is not typically found in open areas, such as grassland or heathland.

Life Cycle

There is one generation each year, with adults emerging in the second half of June, peaking in mid-July, with a few individuals continuing into August. The flight period is relatively-short when compared with its close relatives.

Imago

Male and female are almost identical in appearance, although it is just possible to make out the feintest of sex brands on the forewings of the male, which contains special scent scales used in courtship. Males adopt an exclusive strategy of patrolling for mates and are often seen in ones and twos fluttering among the grasses that typify their habitat.

A mated female lays her eggs in a somewhat-chaotic fashion, typically perched on a grass stem and ejecting a single egg at random, often into the air, causing it to land in the vegetation. Both sexes take nectar from a variety of sources, Bramble and Thistle being particular favourites.

Adults feed primarily on Bramble (Rubus fruticosus), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum), Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare), Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) and Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.).

Ovum

Eggs are a pale yellow when first laid, but soon turn a pale brown. The stage lasts between 2 and 3 weeks.

Larva

The larva is nocturnal and hides by day at the base of a grass tussock, emerging at night to feed on the tenderest parts of the foodplant. The larva hibernates while in the 3rd instar, but will feed on particularly warm evenings during the winter. Regular feeding resumes in the spring when the larvae can be found by torchlight feeding on grass stems, although they will fall to the ground with the slightest disturbance. There are 4 moults in total.

The primary larval foodplants are Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), Common Couch (Elytrigia repens), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Meadow-grasses (various) (Poa spp.) and Tufted Hair-grass (Deschampsia cespitosa).

Pupa

The pupa is formed in a flimsy cocoon, comprising just a few strands of silk, at the base of a grass tussock. This stage lasts around 2 weeks.

There are so many variations to the skin on this one that it simply had to all be put into some kind of a composite image: 6 skins for ladies and 6 for gentlemen. Some ornate, others less so, some incorporating typographic elements, others without typography. Other than that there are shoulder pads, shoes, a mohawk and a pelvic attachment, which for lack of a better word we are simply calling a "skirt".

To be serious, one of my top-ten super hero movies is definitely Big Hero 6. It has a great storyline despite that it's made for kids. Furthermore the animations are really well done and the emotions of the characters are captured perfectly. In addition all the scenes in the movie are filled with a lot of nice details.

The fact that they used a Fall out Boy song makes everything even better!

I especially liked how they designed Hiro's Workshop. It's full of stuff.

Now with a SuperHero competition on Imperium der Steine I had the chance to build it in Lego.

Excerpt from fpf.ccidahk.gov.hk/en/location/detail.php?id=76:

Tsuen Wan Jockey Club Tak Wah Park was designed along the classical Chinese garden theme. The park, with an area of about 1.63 hectares, is located in Tsuen Wan town centre. Being a Chinese-style garden that is rarely found in Tsuen Wan, Tak Wah Park provides a fine place for relaxation in the bustling town area. Sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, construction works of the park were carried out in 2 phases. Phase I was completed in 1989, while Phase II was completed in 1995. Modelled on the setup of a classical Chinese garden, the park has rock mountains made from Taihu rock, thick foliage, ornamental lakes, ancient village houses, a "pai lau", stone bridge, a stone boat, a pavilion and a verandah. A "Chess Garden" was built in the park, where giant stone-carved pieces of Chinese chess are used to display the endgame for the deliberation of chess lovers. In addition, there are 2 theme gardens in the park, namely, "Camellia Garden" and "Herb Garden", where different species of Camellia and herb are grown. Tak Wah Gallery and Environmental Resources Centre are converted from ancient village houses on the site. They are managed by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Environmental Protection Department respectively.

EXPLORE # 2!

I took this photo during my 5-day backpacking trip in High Sierra: from Onion Valley to Rae Lakes.

My team of 8 hiked about 40 miles, including going through tough Glen Pass 11798 ft (3596 m) and Kearsarge Pass 11760 ft (3550 m)

This was taken at evening before spending very first night near Matlock Lake. I walked around lake at evening - and took a number of macro shots with frogs and flowers. And I took this beautiful sunset photos of near-by Flower Lake. The whole trip was amazing, opening my eyes at beauty of high mountains filled with dozens and dozens of alpine lakes...It was not easy to carry a 40-pound backpack and climb high elevation passes while the air is so thin, but it was worh the effort and I surely will return here again

Buka Island is the second largest island in the Papua New Guinean province of Bougainville.

Buka is situated on Buka Island, Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea. It has been the capital of the province during the Bougainville civil war. The former, or proper capital of Bougainville, Arawa was all but destroyed in 1990 as tensions reached a critical level in a civil uprising.

Buka today is a bustling, peaceful town, detached by water from the main island Bougainville, and the much publicized tension there.

Eumigus rubioi

Endemismo nevadense

why sayonara? greeks use this japanese word, for flip-flops, as they look like the traditional footwear.

after a tiring overnight ferry ride, our patience was thin. we couldn't wait for a longer drive and headed for the most local beach at vrontados.

Well the whole day started with us getting there and going through a 1& 1/ 2 hour talk on what to do and not do when you went in with the wolves. They are wild but they are ok with people being in with them as long as you do nothing stupid.

Monty, Gail, and Pat were in with us the whole time and at one point I had three wolves surrounding me wanting to be scratched behind the ear. It was incredible. Valerie and Tony were there also. I will put up links to their streams tonight.

Oh and I will put up pics of the staff with the wolves also. I am in Atlanta waiting for my husband to get out of work. Talk to you all later tonight.

"Non avrai altro Dio all'infuori di me" spesso mi hai fatto pensare.

ma forse era stanco, forse troppo occupato, non ascoltò il mio dolore;

senza finire legati agli altari sgozzati come animali,

senza finire legati agli altari sgozzati come animali.

io nel vedere quest'uomo che muore, madre io provo dolore;

"sound and light"), or a sound and light show is a form of nighttime entertainment that is usually presented in an outdoor venue of historic significance. Special lighting effects are projected onto the façade of a building or ruin and synchronized with recorded or live narration and music to dramatize the history of the place. The invention of the concept is credited to Paul Robert-Houdin, who was the curator of the Château de Chambord in France, which hosted the world's first son et lumière in 1952. Another was established in the early 1960s at the site of the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt.

This night time medium naturally lends itself to ecclesiastical buildings, stately homes and ruins, and has rapidly become very popular in France where about 50 annual productions take place, principally in the Loire Valley, at the Palace of Versailles and at Les Invalides in Paris.

Essentially the format involves no active participation by actors but a recorded narrative of the history of the building concerned by one or a cast of voices. To this is added music or sound effects as appropriate, all of which is synchronised to lighting effects which provide the visual dimension. Pyrotechnic effects are occasionally included to give added spectacle.

A relatively recent variation is that, rather than the music and narration coming through a concert-like sound system, they may use headsets, such as in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's "Lights of Liberty". This allows an audience to move through a historic district as the show proceeds.
