Perth City Town Hall, got this shot when I was on a Hop-on Hop-off tour Rooftop
Designed by Richard Roach Jewell and James Manning in the Victorian Free Gothic style, the hall was built by convicts and free men between 1868 and 1870. Its decorations contain a number of convict motifs, including windows in the shape of the broad arrow, and decorations in the shape of a hangman's rope. (Wikipedia)
Perth was flooded, cars were pelted with hail the size of golf balls, train stations closed and stairs were turned into water features. I grabbed my p&s camera to try and take some photos on the lightning.
Sara Drake - Detail of 3D map of Perth and the Swan River at night - Mixed media - balsa wood, beads, wire and acrylic paint
Perth Stadium located in Burswood adjacent to the Swan River, Armadale railway line and Graham Farmer Freeway. It is the main venue for AFL football replacing Subiaco Oval as the home ground of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers for the 2018 season. It is also the venue for large-drawing cricket matches what were previously played at the nearby WACA ground. Under a sponsorship arrangement it is currently known as Optus Stadium.
The stadium seats around 60,000 spectators as an oval with the ability to be reconfigured for for a rectangular field with a capacity of 65,000. The development of the Burswood stadium was chosen over a potential redevelopment of Subiaco to a similar capacity ground in mid 2011 - the previous plan was the build in Kitchener Park and demolish the existing Subiaco Oval until theconcept was abandoned in early 2009. The Burswood site selection was made due to its lack of development constraints and the presence of the railway line enabling a large station and sidings to be constructed.
The stadium site was previously part of Burswood Park Public Golf Course which closed and the site was split between the stadium and an adjacent hotel development servicing nearby Crown Casino. Decades prior to that the stadium site was Goodwood Racecourse - located alongside current Belmont Park Racecourse both were privately developed before being taken over by the Western Australian Turf Club in 1945 and Goodwood was subsequently closed.
My first attempt at a HDR night scene. I used 15 shots and processed them with Photomatix, it looked pretty crap so i masked in some parts from the original exposures in Photoshop elements to balance it out a bit. Please let me know what you think.

Back to Perth - September 2024
Our trip to Perth in March this year was cut short - by floods on the Indian Pacific route - so we made up for it in September. We visited Perth (and environs) in September.
Here we see trains at Perth Railway Station.
Balhousie Castle in Perth was built in 1631 and restored in 1862-1863. It houses the museum of the famous Black Watch regiment. Unfortunately, the museum was closed when we were there.
63A in 2013. Looking at the Running Foreman's office.
The stairs leading to the loco lodge is still extant (to the right of the trees). Generations of steam men from Aberdeen, Inverness, Aberdeen, Forfar, Crewe, Carlisle and more, would be familiar with this view!
Saturday Night in Perth, vorm Casino.
This is the junction where trains heading north to Inverness keep straight on and trains like this Dundee/Aberdeen express, cross over to the left hand track, heading north east.
Perth is a lovely city. Modern mixed with turn of the century buildings, it is bright, clean and friendly. The large open expanses of the Swan River and Kings Park make it seem clean and very uncrowded. My favourite State Capital I think.
Pictures from Perth and in and around the grounds of scone palace. The palace is most famous for having been the location where all the kings of Scotland were crowned and where the Stone of destiny was kept before it was taken by Edward 1st and put in westminster abby and there after all the future monarchs of Scotland and England were crowned
