The Nikkorex Auto 35 was a consumer level leaf shutter SLR offered by Nikon in the early 60s. It was not particularly successful, though it did offer an innovative (for the time) automatic aperture feature.
In appearance it was very similar to the Pentina, but that’s about all they have in common. I enjoy restoring “parts” cameras, but some are more of a challenge than others. This one proved to be a real hair puller, and even by the time I got to 5 bodies I had managed no success, mostly due to the devilishly frustrating linkage between the body, mirror return, shutter, and meter/aperture interface.
David aka as ‘Heavy’ Whalley, a Scot by birth and son of a clergyman, he served with the RAF Mountain Rescue Service in the following teams - RAF Kinloss(KMRT) 1972- 74, RAF Masirah (Oman) 1974-75, KMRT1975-79, RAF Valley 1979-82, KMRT 1983-84, Leuchars 1984-89, KMRT 1989-2002. Initially thwarted in his attempt to join KMRT because at 5’4” tall he was deemed ‘too skinny’ - he persisted and it certainly paid off. Through a combination of sheer hard work, persistence and ability he rose through the ‘ranks’ of the MRS which, fortunately, operated a meritocracy. He was deputy Team Leader on the RAF Valley team and then Team Leader at RAF Leuchars and Kinloss. His experience was later put to good use as a member of the staff at the ARCC at Kinloss 2004-2007 and he services to Mountain Rescue was recognised by the award of both the BEM and MBE. He attended >1,000 callouts and was the senior TL at the Lockerbie tragedy, an event that he never forgot. After leaving the RAF he remained just as focussed and motivated, holding positions within the civilian MR world as Statistician and later President of the MRCofS. He is in numerous MRS photo albums and these few photos show his life after he retired, he still produces an almost daily detailed blog that he started in 2011 recounting his many travels, thrills and spills as he valiantly battles against a terminal illness.

On Wednesday, it was sunny, in the 60's. Today, Saturday (of course) it barely broke 30 with snow and a persistent wind out of the north.
