Persistence (Death Valley Super Bloom) — FEEL FREE TO SHARE!

As the deserts of Death Valley erupted in blankets of golden flowers during wildflower super bloom, I began searching for other colors and different points of view. If you drive just a little farther south past the fields of gold blanketing the valley floor, you'll find patches of purple and white flowers too. As I walked past a patch of purple flowers, I spotted this lovely golden flower pushing up through the blanket of purple. I thought the juxtaposition of the complimentary colors of yellow and purple contrasting against each other was especially lovely. With "Persistence in Motion," my vision was to blend the stillness of the gym environment with the fluid motion of a workout. Using an aperture of f/16 and an ISO of 100, my intention was to keep the entire scene sharp while capturing the details of the movement without introducing noise. At 0.4 seconds, the exposure was long enough to record the movement of my body as a blur, while the rest of the gym remained static, emphasizing the action.
Upon reflection, my choice of f/16, although it provided a deep depth of field, might have been unnecessarily narrow for the distance between my camera and the subject. A wider aperture could have allowed for a shorter exposure time, which might have given me a slightly crisper delineation of movement while still conveying the energy of the push-up.
The use of natural light contributed to the warmth of the image, but the absence of additional lighting sources led to a reliance on a longer exposure, which is evident in the degree of motion blur. In hindsight, incorporating a flash or continuous lighting might have given me more control over the motion effect, allowing for a sharper capture of 'frozen' moments amidst the blur.
The composition through the lens of my equipment placed emphasis on my arms and the mat, but the angle of the shot might have been more impactful from a lower or higher perspective to further accentuate the motion against the gym setup.
Overall, "Persistence in Motion" captures the energy of the workout, yet I recognize opportunities for growth in my technique, particularly in balancing the exposure triangle to achieve the desired artistic effect while showcasing the intensity and concentration of exercise.
