In 1841, the remains of firemen buried elsewhere in the city were moved to Cypress Grove. The entrance pylons and lodges were designed in the Egyptian style by Fredrick Wilkinson for a cost of $8,000. Many Protestant began to be buried here when the Girod Street Cemetery began to deteriorate. The cemetery is lined with Wall Vaults many of which contain the remains of volunteer firemen. There are also several large multi-vault tombs of volunteer fire companies such as Perserverance Fire Co No 13, Philadelphia Fire Engine Co No 14 and the tomb of Eagle Fire Co No 7. Elaborate tombs such as those of the Robert Stark and the WH Letchford families stand in the cemetery alongside the cast iron tomb of former mayor foundaryman, Charles L Leeds. One of the most interesting tombs, is the Soon On Tong Association tomb used as a temporary burial space of Chinese residents. Basically, I got new boots yesterday. And I love them. So obviously they had to be included today, and just as I was finished the shoot, not overly happy with the results, I noticed that my Buddha statue had his arms up as though holding a great weight.. so this was my end result! Enjoy :-)
Today I used a Sony 90mm Macro lens and using such a lens imposes some restrictions for street photographers but I like it.
Famine' (1997) was commissioned by Norma Smurfit and presented to the City of Dublin in 1997. The sculpture is a commemorative work dedicated to those Irish people forced to emigrate during the 19th century Irish Famine. The bronze sculptures were designed and crafted by Dublin sculptor Rowan Gillespie and are located on Custom House Quay in Dublin's Docklands.
This location is a particularly appropriate and historic as one of the first voyages of the Famine period was on the 'Perserverance' which sailed from Custom House Quay on St. Patrick's Day 1846. Captain William Scott, a native of the Shetland Isles, was a veteran of the Atlantic crossing, gave up his office job in New Brunswick to take the 'Perserverance' out of Dublin. He was 74 years old. The Steerage fare on the ship was £3 and 210 passengers made the historical journey. They landed in New York on the 18th May 1846. All passengers and crew survived the journey.
In June 2007, a second series of famine sculptures by Rowan Gillespie, was unveiled by President Mary McAleese on the quayside in Toronto's Ireland Park to remember the arrival of these refugees in Canada.

When we were navigating the myriad of emotions we felt about living with HIV back in the 1980's, I never envisioned something like what I had the great blessing to observe and enjoy recently at Georgia State University.
My friend, Dr. Larry Bryant, a professor at Georgia State University, has created an accredited course on HIV Awareness (HIV 101) that is very well thought out and it is having a wonderful effect on the 60+ students enrolled this semester. Imagine, an actual accredited course on HIV, with a text book and everything!!
I was blessed to have the opportunity to share my experiences as a person living with AIDS for the past 25 years. The bredth of the knowledge exhibited by the students was refreshing! Thanks to Dr. Larry Bryant for inviting me to speak and listen. Thanks go to him for having the vision and perserverance needed to make it haopen. I pray that every college and university follow his lead and institute a cousre just like it. Among these students is the person who will discover the cure for HIV.

Perserverance is a big theme in powerlifting. To be able to break barriers and plateus and be stronger, one has to perservere. Powerlifters must lift weights that are difficult to lift because it is how they get stronger. This results in a lot of "grinding out" repetitions and struggling to lift the weight.

A question was posed late last night after one of the little guys passed away. I'd like to answer it now.
What We Were Supposed to Learn From This
Perserverance: It would have been easier to give up and let them go without a fight. We didn't. When one of us wavered, the other held strong.
Value of Life: All creatures, great and small deserve a fair chance.
Determination to Live is Universal: It's evident in all species.
Asking for help works: Gained valuable suggestions from people I have never met.
People are Good: I asked for help and received it!
Hamsters are incredible creatures: What I once thought was a "cheap" pet for the kids has turned out to be an incredible teacher about life.
Cypress Grove / Firemen's Cemetery

Cypress Grove / Firemen's Cemetery was built on the banks of what was Bayou Metairie at the end of Canal Street in 1840. In 1841, the remains of firemen buried elsewhere in the city were moved to Cypress Grove. The entrance pylons and lodges were designed in the Egyptian style by Fredrick Wilkinson for a cost of $8,000. Many Protestant began to be buried here when the Girod Street Cemetery began to deteriorate. The cemetery is lined with Wall Vaults many of which contain the remains of volunteer firemen. There are also several large multi-vault tombs of volunteer fire companies such as Perserverance Fire Co No 13, Philadelphia Fire Engine Co No 14 and the tomb of Eagle Fire Co No 7. Elaborate tombs such as those of the Robert Stark and the WH Letchford families stand in the cemetery alongside the cast iron tomb of former mayor foundaryman, Charles L Leeds. One of the most interesting tombs, is the Soon On Tong Association tomb used as a temporary burial space of Chinese residents. The remains were once brought here for ceremony before being shipped back to China. The tomb of Maunsell White, veteran of the Battle of New Orleans and promoter of the use of hot peppers and pepper sauces (still used today), is buried here.

We have a lovely old fireplace that we never burn a fire in, so I keep a large antique pot with some Christmas cactus in it. I just noticed today that the cactus was growing through the fireplace screen. I love its perserverance. ;)

Desmonde is a girl I know from derby. She no longer plays roller derby but seems to lead a life that reflects the perserverance and agression that is required in the sport.
Desmonde is a smart smart girl who cares about others. To me the combination is rare and pleasing. I am happy to know her and happy that she is doing what she wants/needs/loves.
