Cistus,

 

Jara or steppe are the common names of various plants, most of the genus Cistus, and some of other genera, such as Halimium. They are usually part, sometimes important, of the Mediterranean garrigas, and some species behave as pioneers in the recovery of degraded soils. They are pyrophytes, their germination is favored by fire, and recurrent fires help their permanence by eliminating competition from other plants that would eventually displace them from biotopes. Some species, such as C ladanifer or C laurifolius are resinous, which favors burning although they are green.

They are always evergreen, shrubby, woody plants. The flowers are regular, hermaphroditic and with five large, often wrinkled petals that easily fall from the flower. Its numerous stamens produce a large amount of pollen, which attracts many insects, such as bees that produce honey from jara. Its fruits are capsules formed by 5 or 10 carpels, which open at maturity in 5 or 10 cavities with numerous seeds. The wood of Cistus ladanifer, being very hard, is used in the manufacture of small tools or parts that are going to suffer great friction, and it is also excellent as firewood.

Dark Fortress

A last look at the Niederrhein with this cute little basket weavers cottage and its focus on reed and stick crafts for cartage and storage.

 

The Kommern open air museum is just a great place to wander and learn about the history of the people from the regions but I think that this is the way that most North Americans feel in Europe in general anyway.

 

Europe is one great open air museum coming from a land was only discovered several centuries ago, North America has many great natural attractions but nothing of the history and permanence that is available for all to see even in the smallest of villages in Europe.

 

From Kommern I drove 90km to visit the historic Carolingian city of Aachen made great by the legendary Charlemagne, the “King Arthur” of the continent based in fact instead of fiction .

 

I took this with my D750 and Tamron SP 24-70mm 2.8 G2 Lens at 70mm 1/25, f/11 ISO 100 processed in LR, Topaz Denoise, PS (Lumenzia curves masks and DXO Nik Color Efex)

Thank-you, my dear Flickr friends for all your good wishes and greetings. I've appreciated your thoughtfulness so much. I've missed looking at your photos over the last few weeks and am eager to be enriched again by your photographic talents.

I'm using this handcrafted vase again, this time with what I found around the house...some feathers and a dried garlic scape.

The Palace of the Fine Arts was saved from destruction after its use in the 1915 San Francisco Pacific Exposition. Sadly,the majority of the structures built were demolished shortly after the year long show,though a few were bought and moved. The Palace was actually modeled after a famous French chateau and was the showcase of the show. It was never built for permanence, in 1964 it was totally reconstructed.An auditorium was added later which allowed the property to be used for festivals,art shows, and special events.

Son concept est basé sur le principe du «tiers-lieu», où le public devient acteur·trice, où l’on conçoit autant qu’on reçoit, où la culture est vécue de manière spontanée, naturelle, où il fait bon se rencontrer, partager et, par les interactions que le lieu et son action culturelle susciteront, de générer du sens commun.

Des expositions temporaires d’art contemporain y sont proposées en lien avec la programmation du Delta. De plus, un petit espace muséal est dédié à la visibilité des artistes les plus marquant∙es de l’histoire du namurois ; notamment Evelyne Axell.

Les grands principes sur lesquelles se basent la programmation et les activités du Delta sont :

Une approche plurielle des arts

The House of Culture of the Province of Namur has become Le Delta

Its concept is based on the principle of the "third place", where the public becomes an actor, where we design as much as we receive, where culture is lived in a spontaneous, natural way, where it is good to meet , share and, through the interactions that the place and its cultural action will generate, to generate common sense.

Temporary exhibitions of contemporary art are proposed there in connection with the programming of the Delta. In addition, a small museum space is dedicated to the visibility of the most significant artists in the history of Namur; especially Evelyne Axell.

The main principles on which the programming and activities of the Delta are based are:

A plural approach to the arts

The Delta is distinguished by its interdisciplinary cultural and artistic project: cinema, theater, dance, animated image, music, movement, plastic arts combine to compose a rich and diversified program.

Support for creation

The Delta promotes artistic creation, encourages the emergence of new artists and helps their dissemination. Three rehearsal studios are available to them, artistic residencies are offered and emerging concerts are programmed.

Mediation

LIU Wei, plastic bags (2017), 120x240 cm

LIU Wei repurposes everyday materials to explore perception, societal contradictions and environmental impact by transforming post-industrial objects – especially plastic bags – into intricate wire mesh artworks. Glossy, vibrant and cheap but, simultaneously, toxic plastic bags embody both convenience and ecological harm. Through months of meticulous labour, LIU reshapes the waste materials into luminous forms, questioning whether discarded remnants of modern life can find redemption through artistic reconfiguration.

His work invites reflection on the long-term consequences of industrialisation, as the PVC in his objects takes a millennium to degrade. While these artworks will ultimately vanish, their message endures, offering a striking meditation on waste, permanence and the role of art in confronting crises.

LIU Wei: "Wald der Verwirrung" (2017), Plastiktüten, 120x240 cm

LIU Wei verwendet Alltagsmaterialien, um Wahrnehmung, gesellschaftliche Widersprüche und Umweltauswirkungen zu erforschen, indem er postindustrielle Objekte – insbesondere Plastiktüten – in filigrane Kunstwerke verwandelt. Glänzende, leuchtende und billige, aber gleichzeitig giftige Plastiktüten verkörpern sowohl Bequemlichkeit als auch ökologischen Schaden. In monatelanger akribischer Arbeit formt LIU die Abfallmaterialien zu lebendigen Bildern um und erforscht die Themen der Kontamination. Seine Arbeiten regen zum Nachdenken über die langfristigen Folgen der Industrialisierung an, denn das PVC in seinen Objekten braucht ein Jahrtausend, um sich abzubauen. Während diese Kunstwerke letztlich verschwinden werden, bleibt ihre Botschaft bestehen und bietet eine eindrucksvolle Meditation über Abfall, Beständigkeit und die Rolle der Kunst bei der Bewältigung von Krisen.

It's been quite some time since I have played with oil and water for photography. It still fits into my "food" series at least in my mind and that's the only one I need to satisfy. I love how every image is totally different and unique as the oil recombines and the shapes shift. The image only exists for a blip in time.

The amazing walls of the Alcazaba within the complex of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Based on the Roman foundations and first buildings from the 9th century, the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada built the insuperable palace and fortress of the Alhambra with this Alcazaba in the 13th century. Walking here does not only give sense of time and permanence, but also an appreciation for cultural coexistence and tolerance as shown abundantly by those Moorish rulers over the people of several religions and peoples of this region in the 13th century.

Der Schneemann ist ein Parameter für eine bestimmte Zeit im Jahr. Während der übrigen Jahreszeit wird er zum Fremdkörper, der den permanenten Zeitfluss vergeblich aufzuhalten versucht. Als archetypische Skulptur ruft er Erinnerungen an das Spielerische des Kindseins ins Gedächtnis. Als Figur aus Marmor widersetzt er sich jedoch jeder Art von Lebendigkeit und Entwicklung. Durch seine Spiegelung in einer künstlichen Wasserpfütze wird er trotzdem zum stummen Zeugen von Veränderung und Vergänglichkeit. Der Schneemann und die fremde Pfütze stellen damit grundlegende Fragen zur eigenen Existenz.

 

The snowman is a parameter for a certain time in year. During the rest of the seasons he changes into something foreign, trying to stop the permanent time run in vain. As an archetypical sculpture he reminds you of the playfulness of being a child. As a figure out of marble he resists any kind of liveliness and progress. Being reflected in an artificial water puddle he nevertheless becomes a mute witness of change and decay. The snowman and the alien puddle raise fundamental questions on your own existence.

Meteorologically (spring period: 1 march-31 may), we are in late spring, but, at a vegetational level, it is as if we were a month behind.

The cause is probably due to the long permanence of the snowpack on the ground already from the hilly floor, following one of the snowiest winters of the last 30 years on the Karst Region.

Victoria Cruziana est un des plus grands nénuphars et Il faut un peu de chance pour voir cette fleur extraordinaire s’épanouir.

En effet, originaire d’Amérique du sud, elle ne se développe que dans des eaux chaudes. Celle-ci est cultivée dans une serre de la Villa Tarento en Italie, et l’eau de son bassin est maintenue en permanence à 30°.

Cette plante ne fleurit que deux nuits, puis la fleur se referme et s’immerge. De plus, il vaut mieux attendre patiemment la fin de l’après-midi pour la voir s’ouvrir. Le premier soir, elle est blanche, puis, elle rosit le lendemain soir. Bien qu’elle atteigne trente à quarante centimètres, elle paraît petite au milieu de ses feuilles spectaculaires, qui, elles, peuvent mesurer deux mètres de diamètre. J’ai eu de la chance ce jour-là… il n’y avait qu’un bouton floral et la fleur était presque rose….

 

Victoria Cruziana is one of the largest water lilies and it takes a bit of luck to see this extraordinary flower bloom.

Indeed, native to South America, it only develops in warm waters. This one is grown in a greenhouse at Villa Tarento in Italy, and the water in its basin is constantly maintained at 30°.

This plant blooms for only two nights, then the flower closes and submerges. The first evening, it is white, then it turns pink the next evening. Although it reaches thirty to forty centimeters, it seems small in the midst of its spectacular leaves, which can measure two meters in diameter. I was lucky that day… there was only one flower bud and the flower was almost pink….

 

Restos de la entrada a la cantina de la base de Daora, construida con el sistema de bóveda ovoide o catenaria. Remains of the entrance to the bar at the Daora base, built using the ovoid or catenary vault system. This construction method reflects an architectural trend called the Ctesiphonte System or inverted dome, inspired by the arch of the palace of the same name in the Persian city of Seleucia in Iraq. It consisted of vaulted naves used in most barracks for accommodation or as storage barracks. This construction allowed for spaces of sufficient width and height for their purpose, without the need for a metal structure, a scarce and expensive material.

This black-and-white photograph, delicately toned with cool blue hues, captures the raw interplay between time, memory, and the relentless forces of nature. Set against the backdrop of a windswept shore, where small, gnarled trees bear testament to years of elemental battering, the image speaks of endurance—both of the land and of those memorialized within it.

 

At the heart of the composition stands the graveyard, a silent archive of generations past. The foreground is marked by older, taller crosses, their silhouettes stark against the shifting sky. These weathered monuments, softened by time, contrast with the modern black headstones beyond—precisely faceted, their geometric edges catching the muted light. The white inscriptions, sharp and legible even at a distance, stand as echoes of individual stories, tethered to a landscape shaped by forces far older than human history.

 

The cool, desaturated processing imbues the scene with a spectral stillness—moody, mournful, yet undeniably striking. Though the weather is overcast, an ethereal glow lingers in the air, subtly illuminating the scene with a diffuse, otherworldly presence. It is as if the light itself acknowledges the passage of time, revealing not just a place of rest, but a threshold between past and present, permanence and impermanence.

 

This image does not merely document a location; it captures an atmosphere—a quiet, melancholic reverence in which nature and memory are forever entwined.

Sur cette îlot, se trouve un monastère bénédictin du XIIe siècle dédié à Saint-Georges et l'ancien cimetière de la vieille noblesse de Perast. Malheureusement, tout au long de son histoire, l'île fut en permanence victime des guerres ou des tremblements de terre, détruisant à chaque fois ses édifices. En 1812, elle fut prise par les Français, puis en 1814 par les Autrichiens, avant de finalement revenir aux habitants de Perast.

En effet, originaire d’Amérique du sud, elle ne se développe que dans des eaux chaudes. Celle-ci est cultivée dans une serre de la Villa Tarento en Italie, et l’eau de son bassin est maintenue en permanence à 30°.

Cette plante ne fleurit que deux nuits, puis la fleur se referme et s’immerge. De plus, il vaut mieux attendre patiemment la fin de l’après-midi pour les voir s’ouvrir. Le premier soir, elle est blanche, puis elle rosit le lendemain soir. Bien qu’elle atteigne trente à quarante centimètres, elle paraît petite au milieu de ses feuilles spectaculaires, qui, elles, peuvent mesurer deux mètres de diamètre. J’ai eu de la chance ce jour-là… il n’y avait qu’un bouton floral et la fleur était presque rose….

 

Victoria Cruziana is one of the largest water lilies and it takes a bit of luck to see this extraordinary flower bloom.

Indeed, native to South America, it only develops in warm waters. This one is grown in a greenhouse at Villa Tarento in Italy, and the water in its basin is constantly maintained at 30°.

This plant blooms for only two nights, then the flower closes and submerges. The first evening, it is white, then it turns pink the next evening. Although it reaches thirty to forty centimeters, it seems small in the midst of its spectacular leaves, which can measure two meters in diameter. I was lucky that day… there was only one flower bud and the flower was almost pink….

The village of Pigna in Haute Corse has the particularity of being permanently overflown by numerous Red Kites, and at one point I was able to count a dozen of them simultaneously.

In addition, this hillside village offers several terraces for observing (and photographing) these birds of prey, which approach in flight to less than 20 meters.

 

Eingefasst von Stein und Stadt zieht sich der Wienfluss wie ein stiller Faden durch den Park. Spiegelungen brechen das Licht, Mauern rahmen den Weg – und am Horizont zeichnet sich die Stadt als ferne Silhouette ab. Hier begegnen sich Vergänglichkeit und Beständigkeit, Wasser und Stein.

This is part of the Dark City Deutschland series, to explore the dark and foreboding corners of the city of Berlin at night. The new world that emerges when most are unawares in sleep.

 

I saw these pipes and the way they hung their heads, as if in permanence penance or utter servitude to know nothing else but inferiority. In a way, one could agree that all things are consciousness and this kind of gave me a sympathetic feeling, when looking upon these sad structures, so I had to capture this moment and include it.

As spring unfurls its tender green fingers, I find myself caught in the quiet marvel of renewal, a season that whispers of beginnings where winter left only endings. The air hums with the scent of damp earth and budding blooms, a reminder that life turns like a wheel, each season spinning into the next. Birth leading to growth, decline to slumber, and then, birth again.

As I walk beneath the warming sky, I wonder at my own cycles. The shedding of old skins, the sprouting of new hopes. Spring doesn’t promise permanence, but it offers a mirror: in its fragile bloom, I see my own journey. To root, to rise, to trust that every frost gives way to thaw.

Es gibt nicht viele Feldlerchen bei uns. Umso mehr hat es mich gefreut diese hier im Flug zu erwischen. Sie versteckte sich permanent in einem Getreidefeld um dann unverhofft und schnell in den Himmel hinaufzufliegen.

 

There aren't many skylarks here. I was even more pleased to catch this one in flight. She permanently hid in a grain field and then unexpectedly and quickly flew up into the sky.

That might be the most impressive go around I've seen in my life! This aircraft aready blew my mind during departure. Indeed, it is part of the QRA (Quick Reaction Alert), the Permanence Opérationnelle in French, so it was quite impressive to see the take-off, just a few minutes after the alarm rang.

For the return, 1h45 after, I decided to get just under the approach path for a different shot. Little did I know that it woud do such a crazy go-around followed by an immediate and very dynamic left bank!

we build our world with concrete and steel. we create hard lines and great, grey structures. they are statements of permanence and of human will. but the sky does not notice. for a few minutes each day, it uses our buildings as a simple canvas for its own, older art. a brief, impossible painting of fire and light. and we just walk past.

Interdisciplinary artist Miya Ando reimagines the year 2023 not in days, but in flowers depicting the 72 seasons of the nature-based ancient Japanese system of time-telling. The installation comes to life through 72 chiffon banners suspended in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place.

 

What if we measured time not in months, days, and hours, but in flowers? Flower Atlas, by Japanese and American artist Miya Ando, imagines such a world, representing 2023 in the form of 365 signature flowers in bloom each day somewhere on Earth. Soaring above visitors, the 72 banners create a moveable feast of tactile, temporal imagery. The installation allows guests to pinpoint dates by flower and season, in the process attuning them to the impermanence and interconnectedness of all living systems.

 

Ando’s work presents physical articulations of her contemplation of the cycles of nature and the passage of time, in which concept, image, and materials fuse to create totemic objects. Taking as their subject the fleeting phenomena of seasons, day, night, clouds, and tides, her sculptural work is rendered in ink, pigment, micronized silver, gold, mica, oil, or resin, effectively harnessing materials of permanence to express notions of transience.

Sur cette îlot, se trouve un monastère bénédictin du XIIe siècle dédié à Saint-Georges et l'ancien cimetière de la vieille noblesse de Perast. Malheureusement, tout au long de son histoire, l'île fut en permanence victime des guerres ou des tremblements de terre, détruisant à chaque fois ses édifices. En 1812, elle fut prise par les Français, puis en 1814 par les Autrichiens, avant de finalement revenir aux habitants de Perast.

 

On this islet there is a 12th century Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint George and the ancient cemetery of the old nobility of Perast. Scroby Sands Wind Farm was one of the UK’s first commercial offshore wind projects, commissioned in 2004 and located about 2.5 km off Great Yarmouth. Built on the constantly shifting sandbank that has long been a hazard to shipping, Scroby Sands is both a landmark of renewable energy and a reminder of the dynamic nature of the Norfolk coastline.

 

In this view, the light surf tracing the contours of the bank and the turbines aligned against the horizon create a striking juxtaposition between natural transience and engineered permanence.
