Les souks de Tunis sont un ensemble de magasins, boutiques et ateliers situés dans la médina de Tunis et édifiés pour la plupart dès le XIIIe siècle.
Ils s'articulent dans un ensemble de rues et ruelles et sont regroupés par corps de métier.
Outre leur existence en tant que source de travail pour plusieurs artisans, les souks représentent désormais une attraction touristique à l'entrée de la médina de Tunis.
La vie artisanale de Tunis remonte bien avant le XIIIe siècle, qui coïncide avec l'arrivée des Hafsides au pouvoir. C'est pourtant grâce aux princes de cette dynastie que la plupart des souks sont mis en place et localisés définitivement dans la médina.
Les souks sont alors le cœur économique de la Tunisie, les activités de négoce avec l'étranger, la production artisanale mais aussi le commerce des produits agricoles provenant des campagnes ayant lieu en son sein. Très vite, selon les différentes nuisances inhérentes aux métiers, les souks sont organisés selon un schéma simple. Près du cœur de la médina, constitué par la mosquée Zitouna, ainsi que dans la partie haute et occidentale de la ville sont regroupés les métiers dit nobles car ne causant ni nuisance sonore ou odorante ; les autres métiers sont relégués dans la périphérie ou vers la partie basse (Bab El Bhar) et orientale de la ville. Apparaît alors ce qu'on nomme une hiérarchie des métiers au sein des souks de la médina.
The souks of Tunis are a collection of shops, boutiques, and workshops located in the Medina of Tunis, most of which were built as early as the 13th century.
They are arranged along a network of streets and alleys and are grouped by trade.
In addition to their existence as a source of employment for several artisans, the souks are now a tourist attraction at the entrance to the Medina of Tunis.
The artisanal life of Tunis dates back well before the 13th century, which coincides with the rise to power of the Hafsids. Yet, it was thanks to the princes of this dynasty that most of the souks were established and permanently located in the medina.
The souks were then the economic heart of Tunisia, with foreign trade, artisanal production, and the sale of agricultural products from the countryside taking place within them. Very quickly, depending on the various nuisances inherent to the trades, the souks were organized according to a simple pattern. Near the heart of the medina, constituted by the Zitouna mosque, as well as in the upper and western part of the city, the so-called noble trades are grouped together because they do not cause noise or odor nuisance; the other trades are relegated to the periphery or towards the lower (Bab El Bhar) and eastern part of the city. Then appears what is called a hierarchy of trades within the souks of the medina.
