After a summer of Covid-19 and other distractions I think I am finally able to concentrate on a new study. It took a while to decide what to draw and then I had to dig out several older references to get the information needed to proceed. I am clearly out of practice. Still, the first couple of hours of rendering have gone quite well. Drawn with a Staedtler Graphite 0.3mm pencil and Tombow Mono Zero eraser in an A4 sketchbook.
Made of sliced, sanded, stained and sealed colored pencils on a 4"x4" substrate, inside a 6"x6" frame with cut pencil ends on the edges.

The Red Tower was built in 1490-91 of red brick on limestone footings. It was built at the end the stone defensive wall which runs up to Walmgate Bar, on the edge of the Foss Fishponds, part of the extensive water defences formed by damming the River Foss. It is shown on the map by John Speed as taller structure with a parapet and flat roof. Guns were deployed here in the 16th century but it was described as derelict in the 18th century, though it was rented out for various uses, including a cow shed. It was restored in 1857-58 when the present roof and openings were introduced, presumably on the site of the original features. It was repaired in 1958 an then thoroughly restored in 2015. It is now used as a community hub and cafe.

A change of plan necessitates a quick sketch. My own reference picture had a car obscuring the foreground of the drawing. As I don't want the car in the drawing it was time to work out what the shop window would like without it. A quick sketch on a scrap of note paper later I think I have it figured out(?). Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil, my own references.
Mitsubishi A6M Zero and one of the 188 ships on 7th of December, 1941. My humble attempt to recreate the Pearl Harbour attacks in graphite. The Imperial Japanese Navy of 1941 were not suicide pilots, Kamakaze, contrary to popular beliefs, and they dived into the flaming inferno of these ships when they were in the point of no return. Pretty soon, this Mitsubishi and my earlier (drawing) Mustang engages in a bloodier though much less celebrated battle of Midway...
