Six months into Conrail, a less dark spot in the sea of Penn Central black was this PC GP30, on a power set making its way between Bethlehem engine terminal and Allentown Yard.

Amtrak Metroliners still in Penn Central paint line up at Washington Union Station in May 1972. I rode them up to Baltimore and back by myself during a family visit to D.C. - I was 15, but my parents were cool with it and said "just go." I remember being able to stand behind the engineer, and he told me to hold off on taking a slide of the speedometer until he ran it up to 120 mph! (but the slide was pretty dark).
