This Lower Sumerian and Assyrian demon wasn’t treated in the same manner as his companions, the Phoenician gods. Despite his evil appearance and being identified with the devil of the south wind, he died along with the Sumerian and Assyrian civilisations that created him. He was neither cited nor commented on in the Bible, nor was he demonised by preachers, thus perpetuating his memory. In fact, a thick veil was drawn over this character until his appearance in the film The Exorcist afforded him widespread coverage, recovering his identity and converting him in a fetish.
But he is not to be feared as much as is made out; in fact, despite the threatening expression on his face and the four wings extended representing the south wind, there is a ring above his head. This was used to hang it from the neck of expectant mothers and the headboard of the cot of babies exposed to the fatal anger of Lamashtu, spouse of Pazuzu of whom it was said that if she touched the womb of a pregnant woman seven times, she would miscarry.

Este demonio bajo-sumerio y asirio no corrió la misma suerte que sus compañeros los dioses fenicios. A pesar de su aspecto maléfico e identificarse con el diablo del viento sur, su identidad se extinguió con las civilizaciones sumerias y asirias que lo crearon y no fue citado ni comentado en la Biblia por lo que no fue demonizado por los predicadores y perpetuada su memoria. En realidad corrió un tupido velo sobre esta personaje hasta que su aparición en la película El Exorcista habría de proporcionarle una difusión extraordinaria convertido en objeto fetiche y recuperando su identidad.
Pero no es tan temible como le pintan, en realidad a pesar del aspecto amenazante de su rostro y las cuatro alas extendidas como imagen del viento meridiano, observamos una argolla sobre su cabeza. Tal anilla servía para colgarlo del cuello de las madres gestantes y de la cabecita de sus bebés prestos a morir en sus cunas por la ira de Lamatsu, señora de Pazuzu, de quien se decía que si tocaba siete veces el vientre de una mujer embarazada la criatura se malograba.
Mother of Monsters and Killer of Children, Lamashtu is a Mesopotamian demon-goddess who is depicted in a variety of ways. Usually seen with a lion's head and donkey teeth and bird talons, she is sometimes depicted as jackal-headed and pregnant. Lamashtu steals children and strangles them, gnawing on their bones and sucking their blood. Seven witches could invoke her through the use of her seven names, and she would murder mothers, devour men, and drink the blood of the innocence. Her very presence kills foliage and poisons rivers and lakes.
Lamashtu's chief rival is her brother, Pazuzu, and invoking her can protect against his evil swarms and plagues... but at what cost?

I watched again saturday the movie The exorcist and we see in it Pazuzu, the demon of the wind, so i had that idea.

Plaque de conjuration contre la Lamashtu, dite "plaque des enfers''
Ninive 6/4
Destinée à être suspendue au chevet du malade, cette plaque avait une fonction de protection contre la terrible démone Lamashtu, représentée sur la face de l'objet, tenue pour responsable de nombreuses maladies. Son époux, Pazuzu, représenté au dos, est invoqué pour l'inciter à fuir et favoriser ainsi la guérison.
1- Les acteurs de la cérémonie d'exorcisme
La scène d'exorcisme se lit en registres. Au registre supérieur, des symboles figurent les grands dieux cosmiques qui sont invoqués pour la guérison. On reconnaît le disque solaire de Shamash, le croissant lunaire de Sîn, le foudre du dieu de l'orage Adad et le disque ailé d'Assur, divinité suprême de l'empire assyrien. Au deuxième registre, sept génies, avec pour chacun, une tête d'animal différent, ont une fonction vraisemblablement bénéfique : ils semblent être postés symboliquement devant la porte de la chambre du malade afin d'en garder l'accès. Au troisième registre, est représenté le malade, couché sur un haut lit et entouré de deux personnages, vêtus de dépouilles de poisson comme les génies associés à Ea, dieu de l'abîme et de la sagesse. Ce sont sans doute deux prêtres exorcistes qui conduisent le rituel, assistés de trois autres génies zoocéphales.
2- L'incitation au départ de la responsable des maux
Les causes de la maladie apparaissent au registre inférieur. Lamashtu, installée sur un âne et dans une barque, est deux fois plus grande que tous les autres personnages. Son aspect physique est en relation avec la peur qu'elle inspire aux humains : dotée d'un corps velu, elle a une tête de lionne et des serres de rapace. Elle est représentée tenant des serpents dans les mains et allaitant deux lionceaux. Une inscription la décrit comme "furieuse et cruelle, déesse et éblouissante d'éclat ; elle est une louve ; elle saisit le jeune homme sur le passage, la jeune fille dans ses jeux, l'enfant dans les bras de sa nourrice". La barque évolue sur une rivière remplie de poissons qui symbolise le monde de l'Apsû, le domaine souterrain où évoluent les démons. Les présents et les provisions qui se trouvent sur le côté de la scène doivent l'inciter à entreprendre son voyage de retour dans le monde souterrain. Derrière Lamashtu, Pazuzu se tient debout, un bras levé. Même si son geste peut sembler menaçant et si son apparence n'est guère plus avenante que celle de son épouse, avec son corps ailé recouvert d'écailles, sa tête semblable à celle d'un dragon, sa queue de scorpion et ses pattes de rapace, il est néanmoins là pour protéger le malade en amadouant son épouse. C'est aussi Pazuzu que l'on voit surgir au-dessus de la scène en s'agrippant au dos de la plaque. Les documents et objets qui visent à se protéger contre les méfaits de Lamashtu sont fort répandus au Ier millénaire en Mésopotamie, période au cours de laquelle ce type de croyance semble avoir été particulièrement développé.
Suspendue au chevet du malade, cette plaque aux vertus conjuratoires était destinée à lutter contre l'action maléfique de la démone Lamashtu, tenue pour responsable de diverses maladies, en particulier celles frappant la femme enceinte. C'est elle qui est représentée au centre de la plaque, avec une tête de lionne, un corps humain et des pattes de rapace. Son époux Pazuzu s'agrippe au revers, la tête surgissant par-dessus le rebord supérieur. C'est un puissant démon qui est invoqué à l'appui de la guérison. L'opération de conjuration est placée sous les auspices des grandes divinités, représentées par leurs emblèmes. En dessous, un groupe de sept génies à têtes d'animaux, médiateurs entre les mondes divin et humain, protège la chambre du malade. Celui-ci est allongé sur son lit, la main levée en signe de prière. Deux personnages l'entourent, vêtus de dépouilles de poissons en l'honneur d'Ea, le dieu de la magie. Ce sont les prêtres exorcistes ashipu, qui conduisent le rituel, sous la protection de trois autres génies. Ils dominent la responsable du mal, la Lamashtu, qui brandit des serpents tout en allaitant des lionceaux. Rien n'est négligé pour la convaincre de regagner le monde des Enfers, puisque, à la ferme menace de Pazuzu, qui lui indique le chemin du retour, vient s'ajouter l'offrande de multiples cadeaux. C'est montée sur son âne et à bord de sa barque qu'elle prend le chemin de l'apsû, la nappe des eaux souterraines, libérant le malade de sa possession maléfique.

Для адептов фестиваля Roadburn, который ежегодно проходит в голландском студенческом городке Tilburg.
Roadburn 2016 | Day 1 | 14/04.
Сцены немного перестроили, main stage - стала ещё больше, плюс добавили второй бар с концертами, около Патроната, и учитывая sold out, можно сделать вывод что у них тут всё в более чем в порядке. 8 токенов стоит 20 евро, отличное IPA стоит 2.5 токена, обычное (loffe и т.д.) - 2. Еды стало явно намного больше, чем раньше, видимо эта новая тенденция - делать деньги на еде на музыкальном фесте долетела и сюда.
Итак, кто стал лучшим в первый день:
01. Oranssi Pazuzu - space/kraut/post metal, но к сожалению, в Патронат попали не все, т.к. для них он уже слишком мал, и народа набилось как селёдок, но те кто проник, уверен, испытали почти экстаз (замечу, что на концертах они звучат гораздо мощнее чем на записях).
02. Der Blutharsch and The Infinite Church of the Leading Hand - для меня открытие, это Der Blutharsch + вокалистка Albin Julius (пела на немецком) - получился психоделический dark kraut (с почти Nico на вокале).
03. Hell - sludge/drone, не очень понимаю, когда группа выбирает подобное название, которое на discogs выглядят как Hell(66), например, но именно эти, из Salem, OR, оказались неординарными чуваками, загружая в зал нелинейные психоделические телеги по 15 минут, на вокале гитарист и ударник + девушка со скрипкой.
04. Cult of Luna - видел их раньше, в Хельсинки, например, поэтому на этот раз ограничился второй половиной концерта, и снова повторю, что живьём у них получается намного лучше чем на записях.
05. Paradise Lost - в детстве у меня была их кассета (с My Dying Bride на второй стороне, которых я люблю до сих пор!) - никогда бы не подумал что услышу PL в этой жизни, но вчера они полностью отыграли альбом Gothic (1991), и на том спасибо.
06. Arktau Eos - странноватый финский проект, с anonymous band members, они вышли замотанные в тряпки, были похожи на мумий, или типа того - как кочевники в бесконечной пустыне drone ambient doom, классные!
07. Abyssion - бодрые фины, при участии музыкантов из Dark Buddha Rising и Oranssi Pazuzu.
08. Black Mountain - модные канадские ребята, с налетом психодела, с девицей на вокале (не всегда), пока по-моему сыроваты живьем, этих как раз лучше слушать в записи.
09. Hexvessel - широко известный в узких кругах psychedelic folk, во главе с англичанином который (видимо съел столько грибов, что) переехал в Finland, в принципе они интересные, но смотря что играют. Кстати, я как-то видел их - на разогреве Alcest, в Хельсинки, и тогда мне очень понравилось, хотя поехал не из-за Alcest или Hexvessel, а вообще из-за дримпоп/шугейз британцев - The Fauns.
10. Grafir - сырой цепляющий исландский bm/punk, они были первыми на новой сцене, которая теперь вместо Bat Cave (в баре Extase).

и ещё пара ребят, которые попались по пути, и их нельзя не отметить: Cult of Occultt, Converge, Bang, Behold! The Monolith, The Body - всё равно всех не пересмотришь, не знаю как вас, но меня к шестому Roadburn'у (с 2011 года) уже немного отпустило, с тех пор когда хотелось смотреть по 50 групп в день, to be continued.

Roadburn 2016 | Day 2 | 15/04
Кажется D2 пролетел чуть быстрее первого, и его сделали одичалые с севера.
01. Misþyrming (Úlfsmessa) - исландцы, устроили тут ритуальную мессу, много видел я bm, но такого ещё не попадалось, начнём с того что их было 10-11 человек (все исландские группы: Misþyrming, Naðra, NYIÞ и Grafir, которые приехали на этот Rb, вышли на сцену поддержать своих друзей в этой постановке), они были в чёрном, мало того - c тряпичными мешками на головах, Карл! Впрочем это не мешало им вырубать психоделический black metal с оккультными вставками, а финал выглядел так: сначала кто-то из труппы вышел в зал с кубком некоего зелья, и угостил пару человек, потом ещё несколько человек спустились в зал встав полукругом (шабаш происходил в соборе Het Patronaat), и один из участников выпив из отдельной чашы (очевидно Oude Jenver'a) рухнул на пол - через некоторое время его душа отделилась проследовав за кулисы, параллельно остальные музыканты тоже исчезли - если они вам где-то попадутся с этой программой, то рекомендую не пропустить! Хотя возможно в плане концертного исполнения этим молодым ребятам ещё есть куда расти, но они совершенно точно нашли свою фишку, и думаю далеко пойдут, из того что здесь уже было когда-то, можно отчасти сравнить с космическим сетом необычных шведов - Terra Tenebrosa, на Rb 2014, хотя у тех намного более noise/reverb - посмотрел бы снова и их тоже.
02. Hills - шведские краутрокеры - psychedelic / proto-motorik, впервые увидел (не знал о них, и за подобные открытия я и люблю Roadburn!) - отличные 10-15-ти минутные телеги с олдскульным мугом, и саундом а-ля The Velvet Undergroung.
03. Of The Wand And The Moon - меланхоличный neo dark folk из Дании, во главе с Kim Larsen, давно хотел их увидеть - живьём хороши (для тех кто такое слушает), их там оказалось аж 6 человек, с девушкой на бэк-вокале, и их кстати отлично приняли.
04. Alkerdeel - бельгийский (и весьма злобный) black drone doom, видел их уже, но мне нравится как они неистово рубятся, парни играли в баре Cul De Sac, и туда тоже было не попасть просто так - наверное оргам пора бы подумать о том чтобы завести ещё пару нормальных сцен, в принципе тут уже нет групп которым было бы достаточно места просто в баре (вот так из-за столпотворения были пропущены NYIÞ, например).
05. With The Dead - проект от кураторов феста этого года: Lee Dorrian (Napalm Death/Cathedral) с Tim Bagshaw и Mark Greening (оба из Electric Wizard/Ramesses) - heavy psych / stoner / doom, т.е. всё как я люблю.
06. Dark Buddha Rising - финский drone/sludge под соусом occult ambient/doom, но чтобы попасть на этих финов пришлось стоять под дождём в очереди! (типичные издержки местного феста) - тем кто ценит Oranssi Pazuzu эти ребята тоже придутся по душе.
07. Diamanda Galás - до неё я добрался лишь к третьей четверти концерта (при этом ранее не видел, хотя она была в России) - уникальный голос (4 октавы), который лучше один раз услышать в нормальном зале с отличной акустикой, начало я пропустил, и как мне рассказали - там никого не выпускали из зала во время песен(!), только в паузах (хотя под конец это правило конечно уже никто не соблюдал).
08. Mondo Drag - kraut/space калифорнийцы с prog уклоном, и саундом а-ля 70-е, классные!
09. Night Viper - на этих еле попал (они играли в новом клубе Extase, и там такой узкий длинный коридор-туннель перед сценой, и когда народа больше чем надо, то не пролезть вообще) - шведские адепты NWOBHM с женским вокалом, местами ничо.
10. G.I.S.M. - первый концерт культовых (точнее слегка отмороженных) японцев за пределами Японии, вроде бы есть какая-то дикая история с огнемётом, с которым их вокалист гонялся за зрителями, у нас в итоге огнемёта не было - как так (провал)), хотя гитарист там и старался за двоих.
Repulsion, Pentagram - попались по пути, и были зацеплены мимолётом. Nibiru, NYIÞ, Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Sinistro, Death Alley & Friends - пропущены, увы. Кстати, в этом же Mercury, где и мы - поселили Chelsea Wolfe, видел её сначала в отделе мерча, потом в отеле, кажется без makeup её тут особо и не узнают, мне она врезалась в память после Roadburn 2012, и концерта в Прибое СПб - на SKIF-17 (2013).

Roadburn 2016 | Day 3 | 16/04
Вот и всё, bm пожалуй достаточно, 6-ой Roadburn для меня завершил свою работу - сегодня Ден Босх / Утрехт, и уже завтра утренний самолёт из Амстера в СПб.
Итак, оказалось что Chelsea Wolfe приехала сюда не для того чтобы скупить весь мерч Коррозии металла, например, как можно было подумать, а чтобы сыграть с Converge! Т.е. на постере написано Converge - Blood Moon (как будто Converge играют некую программу Blood Moon), оказалось что правильно это должно выглядеть так: Blood Moon: Converge + Chelsea Wolfe + Ben Chisholm (Revelator/White Horse) + Stephen Brodsky(Cave In) + Steve Von Till (Neurosis), причём это оказался не metallic hardcore, а некие сайд вещи, включая кавер на The Cure - Disintegration(!) с вокалом Brodsky/Chisholm, Челси пела Cruel Bloom/Wretched World, пока я ходил слушал всяких финов/бельгийцев и другие странные группы, так что этих ребят теперь посмотрим на youtube.
01. Blood Ceremony - канадский prog/occult/acid folk с Alia O'Brien во главе (которая играет на флейте и устраивает психоделические запилы на муге) - они уже выступали на Roadburn'e 2011 (для меня он был первым) - тогда удалось попасть на их лайв лишь к финалу (на youtube есть этот фрагмент) - теперь все пришли заранее, хотя их и поставили в одно время с Neurosis, так что вроде бы основная толпа ушла туда, но оказалось что даже если на главной сцене Neurosis, то Het Patronaat всё равно забился под завязку.
02. Amenra - с одной стороны это широко известные в узких кругах бельгийцы, играющие sludge/post-rock/post-hardcore, и они тут частые гости - играли на Roadburn'ах 2013, 2009, 2007 - видел в 13, и не могу сказать что фанат-фанат, с другой, в данном случае, они отыграли меланхоличную программу в лучших slowcore традициях - релиз Afterlife, в полуакустическом варианте, сидя кругом напротив друг друга, так что фронтмен (Colin H. Van Eeckhout) получился спиной к залу (и это на main stage, перед тысячами людей), но грамотная подсветка и отличный видеоряд нивелировали возможные вопросы.
03. Skepticism - меедлеенныый funeral doom from Finland, чуть ли не с органом (это их фишка, которая очень круто звучит) - очередная группа которую не надо слушать в записях, потому что на концертах они выглядят гораздо интереснее.
04. Partisan - отличный бодрый бельгийский post-punk (на этом Rb кстати был целый десант из Бельгии: Amenra, Alkerdeel, La Muerte, Grimmsons, Partisan, The Progerians, We’rewolves и VVovnds)
05. Atomikylä - финский heavypsych/drone и снова от участников Dark Buddha Rising и Oranssi Pazuzu (как и в случае с Abyssion), играли в маленьком клубе, так что попасть на их просмотр было не так-то просто.
06. John Haughm - sonic architect из Agalloch, вдохновлённый мрачными пейзажами зловещих пустынь Запада, отчасти это было похоже на саундтрек к фильму Dead Man, например.
07. Chaos Echoes - относительно новая французская группа (black/death/drone/doom) надо бы дома заценить их альбом 2015 Transient.
08. Russell Haswell - для вас дорогие фанаты Merzbow и Aphex Twin/Autechre, только из английского городка Ковентри, нойзовый producer/collaborator, и среди наших собственных корреспондентов нашлись даже те, кто прослушал его сет целиком!
09. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth - проект от Tad Doyle (TAD) - doom metal из Сиэтла.
10. La Muerte - бельгийцы а-ля The Birthday Party/The Stooges, правда их вокалист был с мешком/(чулком?) на голове (хаха, как и в исландском случае), а у нас есть такие группы, интересно - наверняка теперь появятся.

Neurosis - туда мы зашли во время их мощного финиша (после Blood Ceremony) - зверская всё же группа, но т.к. я их уже видел на Primavera Sound 2013, то и не особо обломался, сэт-лист был чуть ниже;
Beastmaker - калифрнийский doom с horror movies / occult as influences;
Tau Cross - любопытная punk/metal коллаборация от участников Amebix/Misery/Voïvod;
Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell - британские хард-рокеры, правда оттуда я быстро свалил;
Naðra - одна из исландских групп на фесте (кроме них тут ещё Misþyrming, NYIÞ и Grafir), они играли в Extase, куда было поначалу и не попасть, но в итоге удалось пройти - эти котики были без мешков на головах (в отличии от шабаша который устроили Misþyrming накануне, с ними же!), но зато все перемазанные чёрной краской - исландцы одним словом;

Born from Pazuzu's first breath, Deskari is the Lord of destruction and plagues, and the buzzing horde which surrounds him brings desolation to all.
Of all the demon lords, Deskari is most concerned with bringing about the apocalypse. He seeks to invade the material world through the Worldwound, and Wrath of the Righteous is all about the only chance humanity has at stopping him.
Why two nearly-identical pictures? Because neither I nor the people I asked could decide between them! So let's use this one to talk about... PAZUZU IN POPULAR CULTURE.
Aside from a pretty constant presence in demonology, Pazuzu really got his big break in the 1973 film, The Exorcist, in which he was the demon possessing poor Regan. In this movie, he was depicted either as his idol, or as a Tim Burtonesque weirdo with sharp teeth. And since The Exorcist is pretty much the scariest movie ever, Pazuzu soon moonlighted on album covers, in comic books, and even Alan Moore cited him as one of the many, many things wrong with his brain. Pazuzu's popped up in Dungeons & Dragons, in the Final Fantasy games, and even in Castlevania - since Castlevania is practically its own Dictionnaire Infernal, it really is no surprise that Dracula's final form in Castlevania 3 resembles Pazuzu.
And lots of folks also know Pazuzu as Professor Farnsworth's gargoyle pet from Futurama - or, as Farnsworth would say, "PAZOOOOOOOZOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
You know, I've gotta say it, Pazuzu is a really hard name to take seriously. Pazoozoo! Ahem.

Demon With Bowl

Standing at just over 18 meters, this monumental figure is a copy of a smaller bronze recovered from the wreckage of the Unbelievable. The discovery of the body appeared to solve the mystery of a disembodied bronze head with saurian features excavated in the Tigris Valley. Characterized by monstrous gaping jaws and bulbous eyes, the head was initially identified as Pazuzu, the Babylonian 'king of the wind demons'. The unearthing of this figure has since called this identification into question, due to the absence of Pazuzu's customary attributes of wings, scorpion tale and snake-headed penis. Ancient Mesopotamian demons were complex primeval creatures that inhabited an intermediary realm between the human, animal and divine. Embodying a transgressive response to rigid social structures, these hybrid beings could be variously apotropaic, benign and malevolent. The supposition that the bowl held in the demon's outstretched arm was a vessel used for collecting human blood conforms to the misapprehension that demons were universally destructive beings. This figure more likely served as a guardian to the home of an elite personage.

Destinée à être suspendue au chevet du malade, cette plaque avait une fonction de protection contre la terrible démone Lamashtu, représentée sur la face de l'objet, tenue pour responsable de nombreuses maladies. Son époux, Pazuzu, représenté au dos, est invoqué pour l'inciter à fuir et favoriser ainsi la guérison.
1- Les acteurs de la cérémonie d'exorcisme
La scène d'exorcisme se lit en registres. Au registre supérieur, des symboles figurent les grands dieux cosmiques qui sont invoqués pour la guérison. On reconnaît le disque solaire de Shamash, le croissant lunaire de Sîn, le foudre du dieu de l'orage Adad et le disque ailé d'Assur, divinité suprême de l'empire assyrien. Au deuxième registre, sept génies, avec pour chacun, une tête d'animal différent, ont une fonction vraisemblablement bénéfique : ils semblent être postés symboliquement devant la porte de la chambre du malade afin d'en garder l'accès. Au troisième registre, est représenté le malade, couché sur un haut lit et entouré de deux personnages, vêtus de dépouilles de poisson comme les génies associés à Ea, dieu de l'abîme et de la sagesse. Ce sont sans doute deux prêtres exorcistes qui conduisent le rituel, assistés de trois autres génies zoocéphales.
2- L'incitation au départ de la responsable des maux
Les causes de la maladie apparaissent au registre inférieur. Lamashtu, installée sur un âne et dans une barque, est deux fois plus grande que tous les autres personnages. Son aspect physique est en relation avec la peur qu'elle inspire aux humains : dotée d'un corps velu, elle a une tête de lionne et des serres de rapace. Elle est représentée tenant des serpents dans les mains et allaitant deux lionceaux. Une inscription la décrit comme "furieuse et cruelle, déesse et éblouissante d'éclat ; elle est une louve ; elle saisit le jeune homme sur le passage, la jeune fille dans ses jeux, l'enfant dans les bras de sa nourrice". La barque évolue sur une rivière remplie de poissons qui symbolise le monde de l'Apsû, le domaine souterrain où évoluent les démons. Les présents et les provisions qui se trouvent sur le côté de la scène doivent l'inciter à entreprendre son voyage de retour dans le monde souterrain. Derrière Lamashtu, Pazuzu se tient debout, un bras levé. Même si son geste peut sembler menaçant et si son apparence n'est guère plus avenante que celle de son épouse, avec son corps ailé recouvert d'écailles, sa tête semblable à celle d'un dragon, sa queue de scorpion et ses pattes de rapace, il est néanmoins là pour protéger le malade en amadouant son épouse. C'est aussi Pazuzu que l'on voit surgir au-dessus de la scène en s'agrippant au dos de la plaque. Les documents et objets qui visent à se protéger contre les méfaits de Lamashtu sont fort répandus au Ier millénaire en Mésopotamie, période au cours de laquelle ce type de croyance semble avoir été particulièrement développé.
Suspendue au chevet du malade, cette plaque aux vertus conjuratoires était destinée à lutter contre l'action maléfique de la démone Lamashtu, tenue pour responsable de diverses maladies, en particulier celles frappant la femme enceinte. C'est elle qui est représentée au centre de la plaque, avec une tête de lionne, un corps humain et des pattes de rapace. Son époux Pazuzu s'agrippe au revers, la tête surgissant par-dessus le rebord supérieur. C'est un puissant démon qui est invoqué à l'appui de la guérison. L'opération de conjuration est placée sous les auspices des grandes divinités, représentées par leurs emblèmes. En dessous, un groupe de sept génies à têtes d'animaux, médiateurs entre les mondes divin et humain, protège la chambre du malade. Celui-ci est allongé sur son lit, la main levée en signe de prière. Deux personnages l'entourent, vêtus de dépouilles de poissons en l'honneur d'Ea, le dieu de la magie. Ce sont les prêtres exorcistes ashipu, qui conduisent le rituel, sous la protection de trois autres génies. Ils dominent la responsable du mal, la Lamashtu, qui brandit des serpents tout en allaitant des lionceaux. Rien n'est négligé pour la convaincre de regagner le monde des Enfers, puisque, à la ferme menace de Pazuzu, qui lui indique le chemin du retour, vient s'ajouter l'offrande de multiples cadeaux. C'est montée sur son âne et à bord de sa barque qu'elle prend le chemin de l'apsû, la nappe des eaux souterraines, libérant le malade de sa possession maléfique.

Oddly, although this isn't AS accurate to the description of Pazuzu as that Demon's Chronicle figure (look it up in my photostream), it certainly resembles many of his idols more.

The Exorcist is a horror novel written by William Peter Blatty first published in 1971.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Blatty based his novel on a supposedly genuine exorcism from 1949, which was partially performed in both Cottage City, Maryland and Bel-Nor, Missouri. Several area newspapers reported on a speech a minister gave to an amateur parapsychology society, in which he claimed to have exorcised a demon from a thirteen-year-old boy named Robbie, and that the ordeal lasted a little more than six weeks.
In the novel, Father Merrin, an elderly priest, is in the Middle East studying ancient relics which are evidence of demon worship. His discovery of a bizarre statue seems to release an evil force. Meanwhile, a young girl named Regan, living in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., with her mother (a famous actress), becomes inexplicably ill. She undergoes a series of physical and psychological changes.
After unsuccessful medical tests and treatment, Regan's mother turns to religion. The girl is examined by a priest, Father Damien Karras, who is convinced of the diabolical nature of the case. He turns to the local bishop, who appoints Father Merrin to perform an exorcism with Karras assisting. The lengthy exorcism tests the priests, both physically and spiritually. It is interesting to note that the demon possessing Regan went by the name of Pazuzu, whom Father Merrin had battled on his own years before.
The novel was made into a successful Academy Award-winning horror film in 1973, with the screenplay written by Blatty as well. The film originally contained several key sequences from the novel, which were cut prior to release by director Friedkin, despite Blatty's protests. These scenes were later restored and — along with a number of new digital effects — inserted into the re-release subtitled "the version you've never seen" in 2000.
While he was writing the novel, William Peter Blatty was collecting unemployment benefits.
William Peter Blatty based the character of Chris MacNeil on his good friend Shirley MacLaine. Prior to the 1973 production, MacLaine attempted to have a movie made of Blatty's novel and interested Lew Grade in backing the project, but the plans fell through.
According to Reverend William O'Malley (who played Father Dyer in the film), the events depicted in the film are approximately 80% true. He claims the big discrepancies between the movie and reality were: it was a boy who was possessed, not a girl; the possession did not occur in Georgetown, it occurred outside DC in MD; and the color of the "pea-soup vomit" was not green. He claims that nearly everything else in the movie did actually occur.
Author William Peter Blatty once won $10,000 on the Groucho Marx television show "You Bet Your Life" (1950). When Groucho asked what he planned to do with the money, he said he planned to take some time off to "work on a novel." This was the result.
