Rock City features a long, convoluted rock trail lined with gardens containing hundreds of labelled local trees and plants. The trail also leads through a variety of unique and bizarre rock formations, including the 1,000 ton Balanced Rock and Fat Man's Squeeze. Two other sections, the Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, are rock caves decorated with blacklight responsive sculptures. The High Falls of the Lookout Mountain is a manmade waterfall in the Rock City Gardens. The waterfall is 140 ft (43 m) high and empties into a base which appears as a small pool.

The English Speaking Union promotes scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community. I was invited to the Monmouth County Chapter Annual Spring Tea and National Shakespeare Competition presentation. Every year, an English teacher from Monmouth County is sponsored for a trip to England for three weeks at the Globe Theatre for an intensive Shakespeare program. The teachers across the U.S. return with their knowledge and experience to further enrich the education of their pupils in the appreciation of Shakespeare and the proper use of the English language.

Pattens, a kind of primitive kind of protection against foul weather, and fouler streets.

According to the Bata Shoe Museum, pattens have been in use in Europe and North America since at least the 12th century. Pattens were overshoes, a thick wooden sole with a leather top that slipped on, or buckled or tied over the wearer's regular shoes, and served to lift the foot away from mud, snow, or just the general filth that collected in early modern city streets. The example, upper left, is Dutch, from the 1400s.

A fashionable version of the functional patten appeared for 18th c. ladies. More often called clogs, these were a light, second sole that tied over a lady's heeled dress shoe, and usually were made of the same fabric as the shoe to form a matching set, like the ones, lower left. Since the surviving examples show so little wear, it's unlikely that they served the same heavy-duty protective service that their sturdier country-cousins saw. Instead they must have been worn for very short walks from a carriage to a door, or perhaps to create a wider sole to prevent heels from sinking into gravel while strolling a genteel garden path.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1886 as the private Chattanooga University (changed to the University of Chattanooga in 1907). The school merged with several other colleges before joining the University of Tennessee system in 1969 as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and became public.

Information:

The vast majority of Nippon wares produced during the Nippon era were manufactured by the company that would later become the modern day Noritake Company. There are a total of 359 back stamps known to date. Joan Van Patten has collected a vast number of Nippon back stamps in her book entitled Van Patten's ABC's of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, published in 2005.

History:

Noritake Co., Limited, commonly known as "Noritake," grew out of a trading company established in Tokyo and in New York City by the Morimura Brothers in 1876. In 1904, key members of this trading company created the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. ("the Company that makes Japan's Finest China"), in Japan. Noritake's wares were mostly aimed at the European Market. This forerunner of the modern Noritake Company was founded in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. After various mergers the company now comes under the umbrella of the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. Most of the company’s early wares carried one of the various “Nippon” back stamps to indicate its country of origin when exported to Western markets. Today, many collectors agree that the best examples of “Nippon-era” (1891–1921) hand painted porcelain carry a back stamp used by "Noritake" during the Nippon era.

Although consumers and collectors alike have called these wares, "Noritake" (and/or simply, "Nippon") since the late 1920s, the Japanese parent company did not officially change its name to the Noritake Co., Limited until 1981. Evidently, since Noritake is the name of a place, the company was initially prohibited from registering the name as a trade name.

In August, 1914, Maurice Patten and brother Hubert, left Eartham, family and fiancée Dorothy to join “B Company” 7th Service Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. In January, 1916, Maurice was killed. His captain wrote: ‘The loss to the company will be a heavy one, he was a strong and willing worker, one whose cheerfulness never deserted him. A most capable young NCO (A non-commissioned officer) his company will miss a good friend.’

These were worn to protect leather boots from muddy lanes. No doubt Elizabeth Bennet could've done with a pair of these when she traipsed off to Netherfield to see Jane!
