Pattens are protective overshoes worn in Europe from the Middle Ages until the early 20th century. Pattens were worn outdoors over a normal shoe, held in place by leather or cloth bands, with a wooden or later wood and metal sole. Pattens functioned to elevate the foot above the mud and dirt (including human effluent and animal dung) of the street, in a period when road and urban paving was minimal.... Pattens were worn by both men and women during the Middle Ages, and are especially seen in art from the 15th century: a time when poulaines, shoes with very long pointed toes, were particularly in fashion... Wearing of pattens inside church was discouraged, if not outright forbidden: perhaps because of the noise they made, the oft-commented "clink" being the consensus term for the sound; Jane Austen wrote of the "ceaseless clink of pattens" referring to life in Bath.
I love being a part of a community of faithful and finding traces of my faith in unexpected places within the community. It is a beautiful reminder of God's eternal presence in all things and each one of us -- yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Rock City features a long, convoluted rock trail lined with gardens containing hundreds of labelled local trees and plants. The trail also leads through a variety of unique and bizarre rock formations, including the 1,000 ton Balanced Rock and Fat Man's Squeeze. Two other sections, the Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, are rock caves decorated with blacklight responsive sculptures. The High Falls of the Lookout Mountain is a manmade waterfall in the Rock City Gardens. The waterfall is 140 ft (43 m) high and empties into a base which appears as a small pool.
St Margaret Pattens is a rarity among Wren's City churches in being one of the few that escaped serious damage during the Blitz, and thus for a change the interior features we see are the original ones, rather than the skillful postwar recreation or reinvention one becomes accustomed to elsewhere. It was built in 1687 as one of the many rebuilt by Christopher Wren following the Great Fire of 1666 on the site of its medieval predecessor. Situated in the heart of the commercial district, it no longer functions as a parish church but instead serves the City workers with weekday services.
The exterior is distinguished by its tapering lead steeple, the most medieval-inspired of Wren's designs and the third tallest in the City. The church occupies a corner plot so that its handsome Portland stone tower, west and south walls can be seen more prominently. Inside it is light from clear glazed windows and and mainly white plastered wall finishes. A series of oculi acting as clerestorey windows all around the building thus increasing the amount of light allowed in.
The furnishings here are notable for being the original ones, thus it is a more intact Wren interior than most. They aren't on the whole as exuberant as many churches were provided with but give a good sense of an authentic English Baroque church, if a more restrained one. The marble font is delicately carved with cherubs and the organ gallery is fronted by a magnificent royal arms.
St Margaret Pattens is usually open on weekdays from 7.30am till 4pm and a pleasant haven of peace from the bustle of the City.

The English Speaking Union promotes scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community. I was invited to the Monmouth County Chapter Annual Spring Tea and National Shakespeare Competition presentation. Every year, an English teacher from Monmouth County is sponsored for a trip to England for three weeks at the Globe Theatre for an intensive Shakespeare program. The teachers across the U.S. return with their knowledge and experience to further enrich the education of their pupils in the appreciation of Shakespeare and the proper use of the English language.
