Ramón y Cajal Santiago
Ramón y Cajal Santiago, Spanish histologist (Petilla de Aragón, 1 May 1852 – Madrid, 17 Oct. 1934). He graduated in medicine from Zaragoza in 1873. In 1884 he was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Valencia, and in 1887 at the University of Barcelona. From 1892 he served as professor of histology in Madrid, where he founded the Laboratory for Biological Research (later renamed the Cajal Institute), which he directed until his retirement in 1922. Through his studies he synthesized contemporary knowledge about the nervous system and its biological role, giving new direction to the histological study of its structure. He emphasized the importance of neurons in nervous processes (the so-called neuron theory) and demonstrated that there is no continuous “reticular” connection of nerve fibers. He applied new staining methods and microscopic preparation techniques. Together with C. Golgi he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906.

Ramón y Cajal Santiago, španjolski histolog (Petilla de Aragón, 1. V. 1852 – Madrid, 17. X. 1934).
