Casiana Vera Cruz - Senior Scientist II
Casiana or "Nollie" is a Plant Pathologist (Senior Scientist II) at Plant Breeding,
Genetics and Biotechnology (PBGB) Division. With expertise on plant pathology, she is responsible for researches on host plant resistance to diseases, and performs services for bacterial and fungal disease screening in breeding programs of different rice ecosystems. She also leads the IRRI-DA Heirloom Rice Project which aims to raise productivity and enrich the legacy of traditional rice through empowering communities in unfavorable rice-based ecosystem.

Justine Johnstone was born to swedish immigrants in Englewood New Jersey in 1895. She became a Ziegfeld girl and appeared in a number of Broadway shows, including the review "Over the Top" (1917) which also featured Fred and Adele Astaire, Mary Eaton et al. This show included a song called "The Justine Johnstone Rag".
Justine married Hollywood director Walter Wanger (1919) and had an unremarkable career in films. In 1926 she retired from the entertainment business and entered medical school. She worked as a pathologist and was involved in studying the pathology of syphilis. She also was on a team that developed the intervenous transfusion technique. She helped develop resuscitation techniques for victims of electric shock, and cryogenic therapy to destroy cancer cells.
She died in 1982.

This swallow study was performed to observe the patient’s swallow mechanisms after surgery, and used a water-soluble contrast, which is specifically for patients with suspected perforation around the esophagus, as it can be absorbed into the body if a puncture is present. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many facets of healthcare are conducted, and NMCSD has adapted some of its techniques and practices to keep both staff and patients safe while delivering the high-quality healthcare they’ve come to expect.
