Winding through the towering Coast Redwoods, a serene path awaits in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, nestled in Northern California.

The path, curving around Balgray Reservoir in the Dams to Darnley Country Park.

Lovely encounter on a walk last weekend. The weather wasn't as nice as I had hoped and it was almost too dark for photos but luckily the squirrel sat on the path where the light was slightly better than under the trees of the forest.

I was in love with this scene, but had a hard time photographing it. Sometimes you can really love a scene in person and think, this will be so much fun to photograph. Then you start looking through the camera, and things can change. You have to start paying attention to foregrounds, subjects, leading lines, the eyes path of travel and things like that. And it seems odd that the place can be so interesting as you are standing there, but the camera fights you.

I loved the pathway, so I tried to lean into that as a leading line. Then you walk that balance, too much? Too little? I knew I also wanted your eye to lead to the big Christmas tree on the right. I shot a bracket, a series of 5 different exposures, so I could play with blending the scene later. Once home, I used the different tones to also try to pull the viewer through the scene. Let me know what you think.

There are a large variety of animals who live in the Pitt Wilderness Management Area including geese, ducks, Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, eagles, and other mammals such as beavers, deer, and bears. During the late spring, many geese and ducks can be seen protecting their young goslings from predators. During the evening, beavers can occasionally be spotted swimming along the shore of the dikes.
