基隆港在十七世紀時即有外人足跡，西班牙人佔領台灣時，即曾經對基隆港進行調查。
而後滿清治台時期，因西方列強的東來，基隆戰略地位重要，清法戰事在此慘烈展開，也因而開啟基隆的發展。台灣巡撫劉銘傳委由當時台灣首富林維源總辦基隆的建港事宜，亦興建鐵路支線至港區，可惜後來因劉銘傳調職而只完成一座陸海聯運碼頭的設施。
在日治時期基隆港正式大規模建設，實施共五期的築港工程，並清除了港區內密佈的礁石，成為台灣與日本本土的主要交通門戶，並被列為日本海軍列管的軍港之一；後來第五期工程因太平洋戰爭爆發而中斷，基隆港因戰略地位重要，是美軍轟炸的首要目標。
至1945年國民政府時期，成立基隆港務局，打撈港內一百多艘沉船，並復建碼頭、橋樑等各種工程，至此後基隆港開始快速發展，高速公路連接碼頭交通，1984年時，基隆港更成為世界第七大貨櫃港；至1990年後，因時空條件變化，優勢不再，漸漸轉型為結合觀光旅遊型的親水性港口，成為台灣北部最適合遊憩的國際港埠都市。

This graveyard holds remains of some of the Toyotomi, Oda, Uesugi, Tokugawa, Date, and many other famous shoguns, samurais, emperors, and military strategists from Japanese history.
We never know whose paths will cross ours in our lives, or where each path will lead. I met Danielle a few weeks ago, she was teaching a coding workshop here in Iqaluit. Indeed she taught more and was moving here in the summer. Sadly her path lead her to Ethiopian Airlines flight 302, and she was one of the passengers who lost their lives when it crashed.
