This was taken on a hike near Inverness, Scotland.

I just hope people appreciate what I went through to give you this photo. Lying on my belly in wet grass in a churchyard trying to manually focus an old Helios lens is not my idea of fun. As all of us of a certain age with bad backs and rickety knees will know, it's not the getting down there, it's the getting back up again that's the tough part. Anyway I thought I'd get my crocus picture in for the year now before Flickr is inundated with them, which it most certainly will be. Much like bluebells in April there are certain subjects that we all try our luck at each year. So here's my 2021 crocus shot. I'm pretty sure it will be my last one for 2021 but never say never...

Aspen Trees in Colorado

Selective focus on one bud on my Winter Gladioli which are providing much needed colour in the garden at the moment.

Spare a thought for Queensland again facing major flooding for the 3rd time this year. And at such a late stage in the year!

I'll be off for a couple of days so will hopefully be able to comment & respond to comments next week.

The past few years I've been wanting to capture a pumpkin patch, but I always seem to be too late in the season. This time I got it! :) The one down the road--actually in Orting--was already gone, with NOTHING left!--but this one in McMillin is still in good shape, as you can see! They must've planted just a little later.

I just love the vibrant orange of the pumpkins...and I like the barns and the past-peak trees in the background. Hope you enjoy as well!

Looking along the coast from Filey, UK

There were many pumpkins to chose from on this beautiful Autumn day.

Maasai Steppes - Arusha - Tanzania

It is that time of year and the pumpkin patches are busy with families getting out to enjoy our lovely fall weather. I had to get out early yesterday to get a couple of shots before the crowds descended. Maan Farm Market, Abbotsford, B.C.

Having completed a brief stop after cresting the summit at Sand Patch, Pennsylvania, four second-generation geeps get a westbound pig train moving.

Both boxcars seen here are patched for Conrail. The white one is former LV while the other is obviously former NYC (thus former Penn Central).

These are cars I weathered and patched and I'm running them on a friend's railroad for his first-ever open house.

The Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) is a highly adaptable, medium-sized bird known for its rapid global expansion. Originally native to warmer regions of Asia, it has become a common sight in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas across Europe and North America.

Key Identification Features

Appearance:

They have a plump, sandy-gray or buff-colored body with a distinctive black half-collar on the nape of the neck.

Distinctive Tail:

Unlike the pointed tail of a Mourning Dove, the Eurasian collared dove has a broad, squared-off tail with large white patches at the corners.

Eyes and Bill:

Adults possess striking dark red eyes and a thin black bill.

Vocalizations:

Their primary call is a rhythmic, three-syllable coo (koo-KOO-kook) with the middle syllable emphasized. They also emit a harsh, nasal screeching sound just before landing.

Behavior and Diet

Diet:

These birds are primarily granivores, feeding on seeds, grains, and cereal crops, though they occasionally eat berries and small insects. They are frequent visitors to backyard bird feeders, where they often forage on the ground.

Territoriality:

They can be aggressive competitors at feeding stations, often chasing away smaller birds or native species like the Mourning Dove.

Flight Display:

Males perform a ritualized mating flight, flying nearly vertically before gliding down in a spiral with fanned tails.

Breeding and Life Cycle

Rapid Reproduction:

A monogamous pair can raise up to six broods per year in warmer climates.

Nesting:

They build simple, often flimsy platform nests made of twigs in trees, on buildings, or even on man-made structures like satellite dishes.

Parental Care:

Both parents share incubation duties and feed their young "crop milk," a nutrient-rich fluid secreted from their esophagus.

Global Colonization

The species is famous in ornithology for its "leapfrog" colonization style—new populations often spring up hundreds of miles away and eventually "backfill" the space in between. After being introduced to the Bahamas in the 1970s, they reached Florida by the 1980s and have since spread across most of the continental United States and into Canada.

There are two cat cafés in Glasgow, Purrple Cat Café and Meow Café. For those who are stuck between the two of them (What else do you people spend time doing on vacation exactly?!?!), I enjoyed both but Purrple Cat Café has cats that are not pure bred cats which I like more. There are so many wonderful cats in this world who need homes even if they aren't "instagrammable" (Who cares-ALL CATS are instagrammable!) Anyway, Purrple Cat Café had over 30 cats but it was such a well taken care of place without even any smells that I was highly impressed. It gets my highest cat café recommendation which is 6/5 happy cats !
